Oral history is a method of collecting historical information through tape-recorded interviews between a narrator with firsthand knowledge of historically significant events and a well- informed interviewer, with the goal of preserving substantive additions to the historical record. The tape recording is transcribed, lightly edited for continuity and clarity, and reviewed by the interviewee. The corrected manuscript is indexed, bound with photographs and illustrative materials, and placed in The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, and in other research collections for scholarly use. Because it is primary material, oral history is not intended to present the final, verified, or complete narrative of events. It is a spoken account, offered by the interviewee in response to questioning, and as such it is reflective, partisan, deeply involved, and irreplaceable. Surveying the area through a lens of geographic place and space, this research will look at the historical factors that led to the rise of a counterculture here. To contextualize this development, it is necessary to examine the development of a cosmopolitan neighborhood after World War II that was multicultural and bohemian into something culturally unique. -

DISSERTATION RECONSIDERING RANDY SHILTS: EXAMINING THE REPORTAGE OF AMERICA’S AIDS CHRONICLER Submitted by Andrew E. Stoner 2013 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT RECONSIDERING RANDY SHILTS: EXAMINING THE REPORTAGE OF AMERICA’S AIDS CHRONICLER The role of openly-gay reporter and author Randy Shilts (1951-1994) is examined related to his use of journalistic practices and places him on a continuum of traditional reporting roles as considered in the context of twentieth century philosophers Walter Lippmann and John Dewey. Reporter functions demonstrated by Shilts are examined, including those dictated by expectations of either strong journalistic influence over society and media consumers, or those more aligned with democratic practices where education and participation emphasize strong roles for society and media consumers. Using a biographical approach including 17 primary source interviews of former colleagues, critics, sources and family/friends, the examination of Shilts’s work as both a reporter and noted author is presented as being heavily influenced by his forthcoming attitudes about disclosure of his sexual orientation from the start of his career and his desire to explain or unpack aspects of gay culture, and ultimately the AIDS crisis, to heterosexual audiences. Careful examination of the posthumous critique of Shilts’s work – including his construction of Patient Zero – is undertaken. The study concludes that Shilts fully engaged a Lippmann-esque approach embodied in an authoritarian role for journalism that sought to change the world in which it was offered, and did so perhaps most influentially during the earliest days of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in America. -

Originally launched by Mistress Absolute, Mistress Kate and bobette with the first event selling out it continued from strength to strength despite the many venue issues over the years. Mistress Kate bowed out if the organisation due to work and family commitments after a year or so and Mistress Absolute and bobette took the helm. Club Subversion spawned many spin off events including Subversion Mansion, Subversion Boudoir and its most popular 'sub' version, Subversion Noir. The decision to finish Club Subversion was made after the terminal cancer diagnosis of Dave Playpenz. Dave was a dungeon furniture maker and supplier of kit for 12 of Subversions 14 glorious years and there was no way that the Club Subversion would ever be the same without him. Managing the Invisible Hand of the California Housing Market, 1942–1967 Peter P. F. Radkowski III 1 Abstract Chronicled here is the history of governmental interventions in the Califor- nia housing market from 1942 to 1967, a period that encompassed rent controls during the Second World War, postwar urban redevelopment, and the activities of the civil rights movement. Constitutional issues associated with wartime emergency powers pitted the advocates of states’ rights against nationalist re- formers. The Emergency Price Control Act forbade constitutional reviews by state courts, federal district, and federal circuit courts. In turn, the appellate courts and the California Supreme Court held that local and state courts were required to hear litigation pertaining to actions under federal rent control. As wartime federal housing was returned to local control, state policy fostered race-based checkerboard segregation in public housing, as evidenced in what tran- spired in Richmond, California, where there were “staggered” mailings of accep- tance notices to black and white applicants.
