SELLING THE SIXTIES Was pirate radio in the sixties a non-stop psychedelic party – an offshore discothèque that never closed? Or was there more to it than hip radicalism and floating jukeboxes? From the mavericks in the Kings Road and the clubs ofSohotothemultinationaladvertisers andbigbusiness boardrooms Selling the Sixties examines the boom of pirate broadcasting in Britain. Using two contrasting models of unauthorized broadcasting, Radios Caroline and London, Robert Chapman situates offshore radio in its social and political context. In doing so, he challenges many of the myths which have grown up around the phenomenon. The pirates’ own story is framed within an examination of commercial precedents in Europe and America, the BBC’s initial reluctance to embrace pop culture, and the Corporation’s eventual assimilation of pirate programming into its own pop service, Radio One. Selling the Sixties utilizes previously unseen evidence from the pirates’ own archives, revealing interviews with those directly involved, and rare audio material from the period. This fascinating look at the relationship between unauthorized broadcasting and the growth of pop culture will appeal not only to students of communications, mass media, and cultural studies but to all those with an enthusiasm for radio history, pop, and the sixties. Robert Chapman’s broadcasting experience includes BBC local radio in Bristol and Northampton. He has also contributed archive material to Radios One and Four. HANS KNOT INTERNATIONAL RADIO REPORT NOVEMBER 2010 Welcome radio friends to another edition of the International Radio Report and thanks a lot for all your e mails, news, memories as well as suggestions. We have just two other editions of the report this year and maybe a special one around Christmas. The first e mail coming in after the report was send off last month came in from Jon Myer with his monthly update with his interesting site: ‘Hi, it’s the end of the month and time for another update to The Pirate Radio Hall of Fame. New this month: We add another page to 'The Seventies Supplement', featuring the offshore disc-jockeys from that decade with names beginning with the letter S - including such popular broadcasters as Crispian St.John, Don Stevens, Mike Stevens and Mark Stuart. There are some new audio clips, including rare recordings of Ed Moreno on RNI and Dave Gotz on Radio Caroline. Many of you will know that Ronan O'Rahilly, the founder of Radio Caroline, has been working on a film project for many years. We have a link to a trailer for his movie. We also link to an excellent audio-visual presentation promoting the new edition of Tom Lodge's book about his time on Caroline. The ship is called MV Caroline and is anchored in international waters five miles from the east coast of England. It is actually at a point off Felixstowe in Essex. Caroline was fitted out for broadcasting in Ireland. It sailed from a port called Greenore, half way between Belfast and Dublin, and took up its position on Good Friday 1964. That night it began test broadcasts. The following day news of Caroline's existence was released to the press. By Easter Sunday Radio Caroline had started broadcasting from six in the morning until six at night. The sea was calm, but a political storm followed. Radio Caroline weathered the storm. In fact within three weeks it gathered nearly seven million listeners. That figure was supplied by the Gallop Polls and did not include people under the age of sixteen. Radio Caroline seemed to supply a need for non -stop music. W lho (ve,GVVJ Covti GI mP Caroline's music was heard in London, the Home Counties, the South of England and East Anglia. Reports of strong reception were received from all over England. Since then the equipment has been improved and the signal strengthened still further. Radio Caroline has a very large following on the continent too, particularly in Holland, France, Denmark and the Scandinavian countries. The policy of Radio Caroline is to supply musical entertainment with a minimum of announcement. -

Hans Knot International Report Summer 2014 Early Sunday, June 1st the sad news came in that another of our radio legends died: ‘It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that I inform you of the untimely passing of Larry Tremaine, ‘the Geator with the Heater.’ Larry Tremaine, the American who took over from Roger Day as Programme Director of Radio Northsea International in the summer of 1970. He later became Managing Director of MEBO Ltd., the company that operated the station. He had been involved in the music business for some time, having worked with the Beach Boys early in their career, sung with his own band Larry Tremaine and His Renegades (later to become the Sunrays) and hosted ‘Casino Royal’, a nationally syndicated U.S TV dance show. He went on to work for KRLA, KBLA, KDAY, KABC-TV, KTTV-TV and KCET-TV. The Geator broadcast daily on RNI during election week June 1970 when the station was temporary on the air as ‘Caroline International’ and later presented a weekly rock'n'roll show on Sunday afternoons. Larry Tremaine with beard on tender After the September 1970 closedown, he moved back to the United States. He lived in Beverly Hills, California and ran the Carol Lawrence Fine Art Gallery chain. The ‘Geator with the Heater’ nickname had previously been used on American radio by DJ Jerry Blavat. ‘Geator’ is slang for an alligator. (with thanks to Jon at the Pirate Hall of Fame). Another radio friend who was in contact with Larry on regular base is Paul Rusling who wrote me: ‘Very sad news that Larry Tremaine died. -

This article is based upon interviews with women who actively participated in Manchester’s coffee club and discotheque scene in the mid-1960s. I explore the gendered dynamics of the cultural north/south divide and the ways in which girls in the regions carved out access to the style and experience of the ‘Swinging City’, dispelling the popular myth of this being exclusively attached to London. The interview data reveal high levels of creativity and agency and I explore the ways in which encounters with popular culture, notably night clubs, pop music and fashion, impacted on the women's wider life choices and experiences. I also reflect on cinematic representations of young women in England in this period and the spatially motivated discourses pertinent to the case study. It was originally conceived as a general popular music network, broadcasting easy listening, jazz, folk and country as well as pop and rock music. The intention was that it would opt out of the Light Programme with music when the Light was carrying a speech programme. This was largely the pattern in the first few years, with a lot of sharing between Radios 1 and 2, though the two stations did carry separate music programmes at breakfast and late afternoon. The daytime schedules didn't fully separate until the 1970s. Another feature of the early schedule is that many programmes featured different presenters on different days or in different weeks. A lot of the presenters floated between several shows. He joined the local art club, became president for a while, and three times has won its prize, as voted for by the public, for best picture in the annual summer exhibitions. He continues to paint, exhibit, conduct workshops, do demonstrations and receive commissions, one of which was a portrait of the principal of Gordonstoun School. Portraits and landscapes are his preferred subject material, and he now paints exclusively in oils, having formerly also worked in acrylics and pastels. His St Andrews base also placed him close to the Pittenweem Arts Festival, one of Scotland’s premier annual art events (although not this year). It’s not a big town, so artists take up every available space and Alan exhibited in the garage of BBC Volunteer Visitor, Arthur Masson. Alan is one of the pensioners that Arthur visits and in that role, Arthur became aware of the NHS Heroes painting, and keen to publicise it, roped in Guthrie Hutton, another of the pensioners he visits, to write up the story for Prospero. NHS Fife is delighted with the finished painting. The Hedgerow Issue 27, Winter 2010 ...a tangle of words from local writers... The Hedgerow, a free publication from writers in the Epping Forest area, is distributed in libraries and bookshops from east London to Epping. Thank you to everyone who sent in submissions or helped with this edition. If you would like to write for The Hedgerow we would be pleased to hear from you. Down Memory Lane: a discussion about childhood reading About twenty people shared their experiences of childhood reading at South Woodford Library as part of the Woodford Festival. Discussion included how we’d learned to read, role models who had encouraged us and favourite stories that had made an impact on our lives. We heard reminiscences from childhoods spent in Guyana, South Africa and Australia and how general knowledge was gleaned from reading at an early age. Familiar classics such as The Water Babies, The Secret Garden and Little Women evoked nostalgia and strip-cartoon annuals such as Rupert Bear were fondly remembered. Several people brought books they had treasured, including one surviving the Blitz, and others were encouraged to track down those they had lost on E-Bay! It appeared that most of us who enjoyed reading as children were avid readers and books were still an important part of our lives. One member recalled that ‘it didn’t seem like Christmas’ the year her presents didn’t include a book as usual. War time experiences were recalled and the lack of reading material available made books even more precious. All too soon, time was running out so we agreed to continue to discuss ‘the teenage years’ another time. -

Discography Page 3 – Add sessions: 530204 TUBBY HAYES WITH THE HARRY SOUTH TRIO Possibly Flamingo Club, London, England 4 February 1953 Hayes (ts); Harry South (p); u/k (b) and (d) a Bud’s Bubble a unissued Note: This is one of a series of acetates apparently obtained by a fan actively recording and privately pressing records of the birth of British modern jazz first hand, possibly at the Flamingo Club in Soho, London. Resident at the Flamingo was the Kenny Graham group and the club was known for weekend ‘all-nighters’ at this time. Date, artist and name of tune all taken from annotations on the label. This acetate was backed with The Ronnie Scott Group playing Seven Eleven Part I & II/Night & Day/Trottin’/Scott Theme. The discs are aurally crude amateur recordings but represent the earliest re- cordings of Hayes as a leader at age 18.
