Five years ago we started out with just a few hours on shortwave in the weekends. October 2016 we got our own EMPEROR ROSKO 2020 transmitter and frequency (6085 kHz) . Since then, we have been on the air uninterrupted, with daily broadcasts from 09:00 in the morning till 19:00 in the evening. Growing bit by bit each day. Recently we saw shortwave reception reports from as far away as Brazil, Laos, Korea and Finland. Our weblogs show we have daily online listeners from all over Europe, Israel, Asia, Russia and the America’s. Radio Mi Amigo International offers all listeners the best music from 'the Golden Era of Offshore Radio', so only few of them actually grew up with Radio Caroline / BBC / RTL - the offshore pirates, like we did. veteran ‘Emperor’ Rosko and Radio Mi Amigo International But our carefully hand-picked music is universal, and loved by have signed a new agreement, many all over the globe. -
The Dutch Radio Day
The Dutch Radio Day It was in 1978 that Mike Baron and Nick Oakly from Music Radio Promotions asked as few people from the Netherlands, including Hans Knot, to cooperate in a special event called Zeezenders 20, which was held at Noordwijkerhout. Inspired by the Zeezenders 20 happening Rob Olthof from Amsterdam suggested that he, along with Hans, could organise small meetings for offshore radio fans. He made a beginning with the so- called ‘Movie Afternoons’. It was the time when private videos arose and so those 8mm movies, made by offshore radio anoraks, were screened and some discussions were launched. In 1980, Hans Verbaan of the Free Radio Campaign joined in and a group of interested people got together in a small building in Scheveningen harbour on quite a regular basis. These movie afternoons sometimes took place twice a year and it came to a point that there were more people than available chairs. Therefore some bigger locations in cities like Amsterdam, Haarlem, Utrecht and again Amsterdam had to be found. In 1984, the first guests were interviewed including Simon Barrett, Juul Geleick and Tom Mulder. In the meantime, the organising team was growing with Piet Treffers and Tom de Munck joining in. From the late eighties, more people from abroad - most of all Germany and Belgium - attended the event each year. During the nineties, more and more deejays and technicians from former offshore radio stations visited the Radio Days to be interviewed. Our team had been joined by Jelle Boonstra, who did a marvellous job within the Radio Day organisation during a period of 15 years. -

A very warm welcome to this Christmas 2019 edition of the Hans Knot International Radio Report. Who ever thought that this report would still be published after so many years. Still many people around the world want to share memories, discuss subjects concerning radio and have their photographs digitalized for sharing. First of all I want to wish you and your relatives a very happy Christmas and all best wishes possible for 2020. Of course there was a lot of response on the early November report and in this one there is a selection of these responses starting with the one from Ian Johnston who wrote: ‘An excellent read as usual Hans! On one point concerning newspaper advertising - I was with Radio Scotland 242 and also writing for a newspaper group. Obviously I mention 242 a lot in my articles and asked the editor if he had any objections. His reply was that since the station came on air the newspaper advertising had increased because the advertisers liked to print "As heard on Radio Scotland”!’ Yes Ian profit on both sides was a logical thing although newspapers in the Netherlands were not always happy with the popularity of the offshore radio stations. Next is Robb Eden, who we know from RNI and Caroline. ‘Sincere thanks for yet another action packed newsletter. Lobster 58 The devil has all the best songs: reflections on the life and times of Simon Dee Simon Matthews The death of sixties broadcaster Simon Dee in August produced a crop of obituaries that commented on his brief period of fame and the claims he subsequently made about his career’s demise. Most of the accounts suggested that he was eccentric, slightly paranoid, of little talent and had an exaggerated sense of his own significance. The reader’s attention was drawn to his comments that he had been classified as a national security risk by the Special Branch and that the CIA effectively controlled broadcasting in the UK.1 Dee served in the RAF from 1953 to 1958, spending much of this time in the Middle East, culminating in his being attached to RAF Intelligence in Baghdad in 1957-1958. This was a critical period that saw the UK humiliated by the USA during the Suez crisis in late 1956. At its simplest this event, more than any other, highlighted a split in the British establishment. One section took an essentially Gaullist view: Britain should be able to act alone and should retain a domestic economy and services commensurate with this. Another increasingly influential and powerful section saw Suez as proof that Britain could no longer operate either as a separate force in the world or have a particular role of its own that it was at liberty to pursue and should work closely with the US and engage in a number of other activities, such as 1 See The Daily Telegraph 30 August 2009 and others the same day. -

Using two contrasting models of unauthorized broadcasting, Radios Caroline and London, Robert Chapman situates offshore radio in its social and political context. In doing so, he challenges many of the myths which have grown up around the phenomenon. The pirates’ own story is framed within an examination of commercial precedents in Europe and America, the BBC’s initial reluctance to embrace pop culture, and the Corporation’s eventual assimilation of pirate programming into its own pop service, Radio One. Selling the Sixties utilizes previously unseen evidence from the pirates’ own archives, revealing interviews with those directly involved, and rare audio material from the period. This fascinating look at the relationship between unauthorized broadcasting and the growth of pop culture will appeal not only to students of communications, mass media, and cultural studies but to all those with an enthusiasm for radio history, pop, and the sixties. Hans Knot International Radio Report March 2014 Dear Radio friends, just a few weeks before the Radioday will take place in Amsterdam and Martin and I are very pleased with all the warm emails coming in during the past month. Around 100 former employees from offshore radio stations are coming to CASA 400 on Saturday 22nd of March. Many of them are already arriving on the Friday and we promise you a programme which we never can top again. Many of you visited our internet site during the past months, but for those who didn’t here’s a rundown for that special day: 10:30 - 10:35 Welcome with Hans Knot and Martin van der Ven 'The Pirate Radio Documentary' A video documentary by Wayne Hepler (50 minutes) "Way back in 1989, an excellent professor told me about the radio pirates 10:35 - of the Netherlands - then and now. I thought, "Wow! Pirates have taken 11:25 over! I have to meet them." A mere 23 years later, my sabbatical brought me to Amsterdam, Groningen, Hilversum, London, the Thames, and other communities to interview Hans Knot, Ad Bouman, Hans Hogendoorn, Tineke, Herb Visser, Bob Noakes, Keith Skues, Johnnie Walker, Tony Prince, and other very helpful giants on the subject. Two excellent students and my wife joined me in shooting a video documentary. Now, on Radio Day 2014, the subjects of my documentary get to play critic - how intimidating - and we get to go back to the Netherlands. Lobster 59 I helped carry William Burroughs to the medical tent Further thoughts on the ‘pirate’ radio stations of the 1960s Simon Matthews Lobster 58 published a piece that I had written about the odd career of Simon Dee. Inevitably there were many subsidiary areas of research, interesting facts and late arriving information that could not easily be included in it. These have now been assembled and are presented here. Broadly they cover three further areas of enquiry: To what extent were those in the UK who supported commercial radio in the 1950s and ‘60s actively seeking to change the economic and political environment in Britain? Did they oppose the post-1945 consensus around the welfare state and central government planning, and if they did by whom were they influenced? Was there an explicitly political agenda behind the various US-style offshore commercial radio stations that appeared in Europe from 1961 onwards; and, if so, was this in any way promoted by the US government? Did the various ‘counter culture’ activities of Ronan O’Rahilly in the 1960s and ‘70s have a deliberate political purpose? Beginnings A discussion of the origins and role of Radio Luxembourg – in its heyday the epitome of slick broadcasting – was omitted 34 Summer 2010 from the article in Lobster 58 but is worth setting out now in some detail as an example of the earliest exposure of the UK to commercial radio and an indication of how far back an interest in this subject can be traced amongst selected figures in the British establishment. The station came into being as a result of the enthusiasm of Leonard Plugge. -

Hans Knot International Report Summer 2014 Early Sunday, June 1st the sad news came in that another of our radio legends died: ‘It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that I inform you of the untimely passing of Larry Tremaine, ‘the Geator with the Heater.’ Larry Tremaine, the American who took over from Roger Day as Programme Director of Radio Northsea International in the summer of 1970. He later became Managing Director of MEBO Ltd., the company that operated the station. He had been involved in the music business for some time, having worked with the Beach Boys early in their career, sung with his own band Larry Tremaine and His Renegades (later to become the Sunrays) and hosted ‘Casino Royal’, a nationally syndicated U.S TV dance show. He went on to work for KRLA, KBLA, KDAY, KABC-TV, KTTV-TV and KCET-TV. The Geator broadcast daily on RNI during election week June 1970 when the station was temporary on the air as ‘Caroline International’ and later presented a weekly rock'n'roll show on Sunday afternoons. Larry Tremaine with beard on tender After the September 1970 closedown, he moved back to the United States. He lived in Beverly Hills, California and ran the Carol Lawrence Fine Art Gallery chain. The ‘Geator with the Heater’ nickname had previously been used on American radio by DJ Jerry Blavat. ‘Geator’ is slang for an alligator. (with thanks to Jon at the Pirate Hall of Fame). Another radio friend who was in contact with Larry on regular base is Paul Rusling who wrote me: ‘Very sad news that Larry Tremaine died. -
