INTRODUCTION 1.1 Purpose In common with many North West towns, Stockport has a rich legacy of former mill buildings, developed as part of the town’s growth as an important textile centre. Although mass production in this industry has now disappeared, the mill buildings remain as a significant part of the economic and physical fabric of the town. They are an important asset, but one that needs to be managed carefully.
