Jackson Pollock & Tony Smith Sculpture An exhibition on the centennial of their births MATTHEW MARKS GALLERY Jackson Pollock & Tony Smith Speculations in Form Eileen Costello In the summer of 1956, Jackson Pollock was in the final descent of a downward spiral. Depression and alcoholism had tormented him for the greater part of his life, but after a period of relative sobriety, he was drinking heavily again. His famously intolerable behavior when drunk had alienated both friends and colleagues, and his marriage to Lee Krasner had begun to deteriorate. Frustrated with Betty Parsons’s intermittent ability to sell his paintings, he had left her in 1952 for Sidney Janis, believing that Janis would prove a better salesperson. Still, he and Krasner continued to struggle financially. His physical health was also beginning to decline. He had recently survived several drunk- driving accidents, and in June of 1954 he broke his ankle while roughhousing with Willem de Kooning. Eight months later, he broke it again. The fracture was painful and left him immobilized for months. In 1947, with the debut of his classic drip-pour paintings, Pollock had changed the direction of Western painting, and he quickly gained international praise and recog- nition. Four years later, critics expressed great disappointment with his black-and-white series, in which he reintroduced figuration. The work he produced in 1953 was thought to be inconsistent and without focus. For some, it appeared that Pollock had reached a point of physical and creative exhaustion. He painted little between 1954 and ’55, and by the summer of ’56 his artistic productivity had virtually ground to a halt.

ArtSeen November 5th, 2010 by James Kalm With the harmonies of Jan and Dean and the Beach Boys pouring out of every car radio, as a kid growing up in the West during the ’60s, I didn’t have to be reminded that California was where it was happening. I ran away from home the day summer vacation started after my junior year of high school, and hitched to San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district to spend a month getting a firsthand introduction to West Coast hipness. To us back then, the Continental Divide wasn’t just a ridge that dictated whether a river would run east or west but was also an aesthetic division. A rock ’n’ roll analogy would be West Coast bands like Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company, and the Doors versus New York’s doo-wop-derived Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons or folk-based performers like Bob Dylan or Simon and Garfunkel. However, when it came time to fly the coop and pick a coast to pursue an artistic “career,” even though Bay Area Funk Art and Finish Fetish seemed more approachable, sexy, and fun than the buttoned-down formalism of Minimalism and Conceptual Art that we were reading about in Artforum and Art in America, New York seemed the only logical choice. Memories of this long ago decision came surging back during a recent visit to Los Angeles. Art history geek that I am, I dragged Kate and our son Mac on a pilgrimage to 723 North La Cienega Boulevard, the location of the legendary Ferus Gallery.

BIOGRAPHY • PHILIP GUSTON PHILIP GUSTON • BIOGRAPHY 1913 Born Phillip Goldstein, June 27 in Montreal, to Louis and Rachel Goldstein, both of whom were immigrants from Odessa, Russia. Philip Guston is the youngest of seven children. 1919 Family moves to Los Angeles. 1923 Father commits suicide. 1926 Youthful aptitude for drawing leads Guston's mother to enroll him in a correspond- ence course from Cleveland School of Cartooning, Cleveland, Ohio. 1927 Attends Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles, where he meets and develops a friendship with Jackson Pollock, Manuel Tolegian and Reuben Kadish. 1930 Wins a scholarship to attend Otis Art Institute, Los Angeles, where he meets Musa McKim, but leaves the Institute after three months. Studies painting at home and works as an occasional extra in several movies. Sees Modern European painting in the collection of Walter and Louise Arensberg and first encounters the work of de Chirico. 1931 First solo exhibition at the Stanley Rose Bookshop and Gallery, Hollywood, organ- ised by the painter, Herman Cherry. 1932 Visits Pomona College, Claremont, California, with Pollock to see José Clemente Orozco at work on his mural “Prometheus.” 1933 Exhibits “Mother and Child,” 1930, Guston's first fully developed painting, at the 14th Annual Exhibition at the Los Angeles Municipal Museum. 1934 Travels to Mexico with Reuben Kadish and poet Jules Langsner. Philip Guston: Works on Paper May 2 through August 31, 2008 CHRONOLOGY 1913 Guston is born Phillip Goldstein on 27 June in Montreal, to a family of Russian immigrants. 1919 Family moves to Los Angeles. 1923 Father commits suicide. 1926 Enrolled in a correspondence course offered by the Cleveland School of Cartooning. 1927 Attends Manual Arts High School, where he becomes friends with Jackson Pollock. 1928–29 Guston and Pollock expelled for printing and distributing satirical pamphlets criticizing the school. Guston does not finish high school. Takes casual jobs to support himself while painting at night. 1930 Scholarship to Otis Art Institute, Los Angeles, where he meets Musa McKim. Leaves after three months. Is introduced to modern European painting at Walter and Louise Arensberg’s collection. Is particularly impressed by the work of Giorgio de Chirico. 1931 First one-man exhibition at Stanley Rose Bookshop and Gallery, Hollywood. Increasingly interested in political and social issues, joins the Marxist John Reed Club. Creates murals about the Ku Klux Klan’s involvement in the Scottsboro tragedy (destroyed two years later by the Los Angeles Police Department.) 1934 Travels to Mexico City with artist Reuben Kadish. Together they paint mural The Struggle Against War and Fascism (Museo de Michoacan, Morelia, Mexico). 1935 Moves to New York City, where he lives temporarily with Pollock. Joins mural division of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Admires works by Picasso and Fernand Léger in A.E. Gallatin Collection. Changes name to Philip Guston. 1937 Marries artist and poet Musa McKim. 1940 Leaves the WPA and moves to Woodstock, New York, to concentrate on easel painting.
