This method involves overlaying and interrogating datasets of information available in GIS using a set of pre-determined criteria or ‘constraints’. This is an objective method that can be used to determine priorities, and in this case, determine key sites for wetland protection, restoration and enhancement.

  • Names & Opening & Closing Dates of Railway Stations
Names & Opening & Closing Dates of Railway Stations in New Zealand 1863 to 2010 Researched & Written by Juliet Scoble for the Rail Heritage Trust of New Zealand JRS/291 © Juliet Scoble 4/2010 © Rail Heritage Trust of New Zealand 4/2010 Introduction This document lists the names of railway stations and the dates they were opened and closed. Included are the dates stations were opened for goods and or passenger traffic before the lines were officially opened or handed over to the Working Railways Department. Often the Public Works Department would run goods and passenger services whilst the list was still in their custody. These services were operated by the Public Works Department's ballast engine. Goods were carried in Working Railway's wagons. Occasionally a passenger car or covered wagon fitted with seats were provided, but most times passengers were carried in Public Works' ballast wagons. I have included the stations on the lines owned by the government railways, and private lines where government rolling stock was run thereon. This is an on-going work as I am still looking through files and am finding more names and other information to include in this document. Revised versions will be issued from time to time, the frequency depending upon the new information I find. Juliet Scoble 4/2010 Acknowledgements Most information has been obtained from the Rail Heritage Trust's Station Archive created and researched by Juliet Scoble, and from research specifically undertaken for this document. The north limb, seen here looking southeast from south of Lumsden, is outlined by prominent strike ridges trending away through the Hokonui Hills. The axis of the syncline lies to the south (right) and passes under the area of cloud in the far distance. The syncline is formed in Permian to Jurassic Murihiku Supergroup sedimentary rocks, with these strike ridges in Early to Middle Triassic North Range Group. The active Hillfoot Fault separates the Hokonui Hills from the extensive Quaternary gravels of the Waimea Plains (left), underlain by Permian Maitai Group sedimentary rocks. Photo CN43841/16: D.L. Submission to Southland District Council's 10 Year Plan from Kathryn Gay Munro, 359 Lawson Rd, Mokotua, RD 5, Invercargill 9875. Email: [email protected] Ph.: 03 239 5827 This submission relates to the Energy & Infrastructure section. I would ask that the SDC make any new (or large scale) lignite mining a prohibited activity in Southland for the following reasons: It is commendable that the Southland District Council joined up to the Communities for Climate Protection Programme at the end of 2005. I note that the aim of the programme is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Council’s activities and in the Community. I would suggest that the mining of the lignite resources in Southland would be totally contrary to this goal, with it being well known that lignite use as an energy source would result in one of the highest forms of carbon emmissions, with no proven or practical capture technology to offset it. Being a resident on the Ashers-Waituna lignite field, I am also conscious of the direct environmental impact that mining would have on the adjacent Awarua Wetland complex with it's international Ramsar designation. The dewatering required to access a field which lies below sealevel must impact on the nearby wetlands, as well as have a likelihood of salt water intrusion making restoration impossible, so for this reason mining as a landuse in this area should be prohibited.

  • Mokotua Soil
This Information Sheet describes the typical average properties of the specified soil. It is essentially a summary of information obtained from one or more profiles of this soil that were examined and described during the Topoclimate survey or previous surveys. It has been prepared in good faith by trained staff within time and budgetary limits. However, no responsibility or liability can be taken for the accuracy of the information and interpretations. Advise should be sought from soil and landuse experts before making landuse decisions on individual farms and paddocks. The characteristics of the soil at a specific location may differ in some details from those described here. No warranties are expressed or implied unless stated. Topoclimate Southland Soil Information Sheet No. 25 Soil name: Mokotua Overview Mokotua soils occupy about 17,700 ha on high terraces and old marine terraces of the southern Southland plains between Invercargill and the Mataura River, and on similar surfaces in the lower Makarewa and Oreti rivers. They are formed in deep wind-deposited loess derived from greywacke and schist rocks. Mokotua soils are strongly mottled, have imperfect drainage tending towards being poorly drained, and are associated with soils showing podzolised features on the southern Southland plains. The soils have a deep rooting depth, high water holding capacity, and have silt loam textures. They are used for intensive pastoral farming with sheep, dairy and some cropping. They have a cool temperate climate and receive regular rain over the year and seldom dry out. Physical properties Mokotua profile Mokotua soils have a deep rooting depth and high plant available water, meaning there is no major physical barrier to root growth.
