General Comment Clearly about his life up to that point how he's clearly evolved, as we all do. I'm only 21 and I still relate to some of this already. I'm not the same person who I was 5 Paul Weller: The Changing Man ago, or maybe even two years ago for that matter to some degree, That's probably growing up for you, but we all continute to change and learn and discove I guess. It's beautiful to be 21! General Comment Bit on teh personal side, but just thought I'd add that I heard this song on shuffle at the time I split up from my girlfriend. It was of course one of those times where the temptation's there to try and ring up to fix what went wrong, even though I surely knew deep down that it wouldn't work whichever way you look at it. This is kind of a different interpretation, but it was sort of telling me that there's a life beyond what I had, and that it'll be different, better and it's just what I was looking for anyway. It gave me a clear-cut direction at a very confusing time. I knew it was something that i wanted, that it was only the inital shock of what ahd happened that was causing any confusion I guess. Mind you Weller himself was splitting Paul Weller: The Changing Man from DC Lee when he wrote this though eh? General Comment I think Paul Weller: The Changing Man is a song about the changes he goes through each time he hits the floor. It takes all his energy and most importantly "belief" to get out of it. Each time he does he comes out resurrected and different in some way. Sorrow is better than laughter, it may sadden the face but it sharpens the understanding. He goes into these states because he knows the muse and knows how to control it but not when he lights a bitter fuse. All because he is too in touch with himself and what he is capable of. Jamison All Rights Reserved iv ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS “Young Fashioned Ways”: A Study of Blues and Authenticity in Three Transatlantic Studio Collaborations by Conor M. Jamison Master of Arts in Music San Diego State University, 2013 During the late 1960s and early 1970s, it was popular for blues artists—both British and American—to travel across the Atlantic to record with their fellow musicians. Three albums resulted from these collaborative exchanges which have been popular among fans, but also matters of controversy among blues purists: The London Muddy Waters Sessions, The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions, and Fleetwood Mac: Blues Jam in Chicago. Some feel that the American masters did not play to their own potential, and the white, British sidemen sound weak in comparison with their black, American counterparts. These reflections call into question the ability of the British musicians to achieve authentic blues, as well as the ability of the American players to remain authentic in a collaborative environment. In 2002, musicologist, Allan Moore published his article “Authenticity as Authentication,” wherein, he outlined a tripartite typology that can be uses as a basis for evaluating musical performances in terms of the perception of authenticity by those experiencing it. Moore's typology classifies the factors of authenticity into “first-, second-, and third-person.” Or “authenticity of: 'expression,' 'experience,' and 'execution'”.

It was a few years after disbanding The Style Council in 1989 before Paul Weller released his first, eponymous, solo album for his new label Go! Disc in 1992. It was a Top 10 album in the U.K. and marked a return to his first love, ‘60s Soul and R&B. The follow up, Wild Wood , launched him on a run of critical and commercial success: The album went to No. 2 in the U.K. and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize ; its multi platinum, million seller successor, Stanley Road (featuring guest appearances by Steve Winwood and Noel Gallagher), spawned two U.K. Top 10 singles ("The Changing Man," No. 7, and "You Do Something to Me," No. 9), went to No. 1 and he picked up BRIT Award for Best Male Artist (which he won again the following year). 1997’s Heavy Soul saw Weller twist his sound again to take him back to the top of the charts (No. 2 in the U.K.) and 2000s Heliocentric (erroneously rumoured to be his last album at the time), which was a much lighter affair, did the same and peaked again at No. 2 in the U.K.
