My 'Sing for Pleasure' experience!

Stephanie Howe is currently on loan from DWP to the Government Legal Department (GLD) in London. She’s a Coates, a former founder member of the Quarry House Director, and Head of Foundation Choir and has also initiated a new Studies, at Leeds College of Music and, half week course. I recommend the course to anyone wanting to get back into singing and build their confidence in group singing as well as anyone wanting to stretch themselves a little more.

The accommodation was comfortable and we were well fed with all meals being included. The teaching staff were superb and totally dedicated to getting the best from us. Most had day jobs as music teachers so were doing this Summer School in their holidays and clearly loved their job, which was such an inspiration. It was at the on-site SfP shop I bought several music booklets and also the SfP T-shirt! Singers attending the full week also worked towards a concert on the Tuesday night and had the opportunity to sing for some of the ‘intermediate’ conductors in their workshops (seeing their training first-hand) and in a concert on the Thursday afternoon. Those attending from Quarry House choir were able to receive a subsidy for the Tour of Keele campus before course and we hope to offer this next year too, so look out for the adverts next the hard work begins spring. If anyone wants more information please contact the Quarry House choir or look at the website at: singforpleasure.org.uk (Take a look at the work SfP do with Gifted and Talented school children and giving teachers the confidence to promote singing in schools). Quarry House choir meets every Thursday in the Woodpecker Bar at 1pm and we have a taster session for new members on 15 October. Taster Session

Singing is for everyone! Open lunchtime session 15th October If you’ve always fancied singing in the choir but haven’t plucked up the courage yet, or used to come but haven’t been in a while, our free session from 13:00-14:00 on 15th October might be just what you need.

Saturday 10th October FLASBY FELL

I have been instructed that I must organise another walk from the Craven Heiffer in order that we can all indulge in the fish pie again - so this is it!

The walk Does it matter? Anyway we start from the pub and ascend Flasby Fell via the ridge west of Sharp Haw then descend and re-ascend to reach the summit before once more going up and down to Rough Haw returning via Tarn House. Length is a little over 6 miles and the total height gain is just under 1,000ft. If we are all in the mood we can add another mile or so on by ambling up and down to the Fell’s fourth top!.

Clothing Please remember that the weather can change suddenly. Make sure that you have good walking boots, sufficient layers and waterproofs in your rucksack.

Meeting point and time The car park at the Craven Heifer at 10:15. The pub is on the outskirts of Skipton on the main B6265 road to Grassington. BD23 3LA for your SatNav. Please park on the far right of the car park well away from the entrance.

From Harrogate, Leeds & Otley: At the roundabout on the outskirts of Skipton, follow the signs for Bradford, Keighley and Colne. Drive past Skipton Golf Club on your right and at the next roundabout turn right for Grassington. The Craven Heifer is on the right hand side in approximately 300 yards.

Transport There is no available public transport to the start of the walk. Let the leader know if you need or can offer a lift on a petrol sharing basis.

Lunch At the Craven Heiffer or bring a packed lunch and any other drinks and snacks that you will need.

To book your place on this walk Please contact the leader, John Belbin, by close on Thursday 8th October letting him know if you will be eating at the pub so that we can reserve an appropriately sized table area.

Saturday 12 December 2015 Xmas walk – Cullingworth and Harden Circular The walk: This is a scenic circular walk of 7miles with the express purpose of generating an appetite for Xmas lunch. The walk commences from The George Hotel in Cullingworth, of which Wikipedia has nothing to say except that Duncan Goodhew once lived there, and from there to Harden via Hewenden Viaduct and Goit Stock Falls, completing the deeply mishapen circle through the edge of St Ives. Clothing Yorkshire in December can be cold, wet and muddy, and the terrain is hilly - good walking boots are essential and extra warm and waterproof layers must be carried. A change of clothes for the pub is a good idea. Meeting point and time: Meet at 9:45 for a prompt start at 10.00am at The George Hotel, Cullingworth, BD13 5HN (SE 06626 36839). Buses 696/7 operate from Bradford Interchange to Cullingworth; there is a car park opposite the pub for those travelling by car. Lunch Lunch will be at The George Hotel, home of Old Spot Brewery, Cullingworth at 13:30. There is a choice of two festive menus @ £13.95 or £19.95; the pub has requested that we order in advance and pay a deposit to secure the table; therefore payment is requested in advance. There is a subsidy of £4.95 for members of HASSRA Leeds Walking Club bringing the prices down to £9/£15 for members. Please confirm your menu choices, and make your payment for the full / subsidised cost when confirming your place on the walk. - A La Carte Menu - Traditional Menu You can order from either menu but don’t mix them. To book your place on this walk Please contact the leader Luisa Panetta by close on Friday 27th November 2015 Phone: 0113 2324562 (work) 07757 736096 (mobile) E-mail: [email protected] The preferred method of payment is via internet banking to 08-92-50 / 65070800 stating Xmas 2015 as a reference.

16 Battle of the Fat Rascals

Feeling sorry for people who don’t work on Fridays and couldn’t take part in the Macmillan Coffee morning, we had our battle of the fat rascal recipes on the Monday after the Macmillan event.

Marie Cousens of the DWP Universal Credit Programme was our victorious baker and says the secret of her success was baking them early in the morning of the competition and combining two recipes to get the flavour she wanted. My first batch was a bit of an overcooked disaster (and to be honest, the second was a bit overdone but by that stage on Sunday evening, I didn’t have the energy or enough cherries to try again).

Marie gave me some excellent encouragement that I wanted to share with you “a good baker is not one that gets it right every time, just one who knows how to hide the damage.”

Thanks to: Nicola Watkis of Finance Group, Sally Haley and Janie Mitchell of CS Employee Policy, David Richardson of OED Service Design and Management and to everyone who bought something. We raised £14.01 from the sale, which Marie chose to donate to St Vincent’s.

23 Pedometer Challenge - October 2015

British Heart Foundation have approached the Wellbeing committee and asked that Quarry House be one of 15 workplaces across the UK to take part in an online pedometer challenge Over 4 weeks in October teams of 10 employees wear pedometers and support each other through the challenge. Daily steps are recorded on the online pedometer site. Leaderboards will help teams track their progress Each member of staff who registers will get a pedometer and will receive information by email through out the challenge. Guides will be sent to captains and online tracking for all participants is available to log steps and see their progress. Once the challenge is completed each participant will receive a certificate and the online leaderboard will show who has won the challenge and how much money has been raised BHF hope to raise funds for the charity so the Wellbeing committee suggests a donation of £2.00 per person to take part but if anyone wants to collect more money through sponsorship that is up to them. Why not get your area of work to take part? Even if your team is based remotely around different offices you could still join in. This is an easy way to promote Wellbeing and team work amongst your colleagues for very little effort.

Nominate a team captain and let the Wellbeing committee know as soon as possible. All information will be sent at this point If you need any further information please contact Dawn Lennie on the Wellbeing email address [email protected]

24 “The Glass Menagerie” by Tennessee Williams, West Yorkshire Playhouse

I confess that this is the first time I’ve ever draws you into the moment. I won’t detail seen a Tennessee Williams play on the the plot, but ultimately (a bit like “Death stage – always a bit wary of the southern of a Salesman”) it revolves around gothic melodrama – but as it was starring nostalgia for an idealised past, unrealistic a genuine Hollywood A-lister in Greta hopes of a better future and a Scacchi and I was on leave and nothing devastating finale. It’s a bit like Samuel planned for a Thursday afternoon I Beckett in some ways – the desire to thought I’d give it a go. I was concerned escape a crushing present, the that it would full of school trips, gasping hopelessness and in this play specifically and giggling at naughty words and awaiting salvation in the shape of a showing signs of boredom after about gentleman caller. Unlike Beckett, the five minutes. I needn’t have worried as I caller does come, but after a brief was about the fifth youngest person in moment of happiness and hope it all the audience, so apart from the comes back to desolation. occasional rustle of sweetie papers nothing to disturb the curmudgeon in me. The cast is superb. Scacchi carries off the Although the director did perch herself southern belle who has become dowdy next to me after the interval (it was very with panache (quite a feat as ‘dowdy’ is nearly a full house) and got through two not the word to describe her in reality), tubs of ice cream. Tom Mothersdale is the son longing for more from life, Erin Doherty is the tragic I was impressed. The play had the daughter and Eric Kofi Abreka the claustrophobic atmosphere of all of his unintentionally heartless caller who raises plays, along with the exasperated her hopes and then shatters them like the emission of suppressed emotions and glass animal of the title. The final family tensions but in fact I found it monologue as the son recounts imagining genuinely moving as it approached its his poor sister appearing in his future life inevitable unhappy conclusion. before he realises she is still suffering at home is genuinely heart-breaking. The set itself is minimalist and claustrophobic, bare faced walls with a staircase that leads to the porch and on a pool, for reasons that are too deep for me to fathom.

Williams’s plays are very ‘stagey’ with impassioned monologues but the quality of the performances (including impeccable American accents) soon

Closing date Monday 30th November 2015

Lacey’s Cheese is a small creamery in the unique building of Richmond Station, using old fashioned, handmade methods to produce a traditional cheese, using locally sourced products. The creamery is designed with a viewing platform to encourage the public to view the cheese making process and become involved. Founded in 2006 by Simon Lacey, this is a small family run business who is offering the chance for small groups to have a hands on cheese making experience.

This is a full day experience (10.00 – 15.00) with a rustic lunch provided outside (weather permitting), and a selection of cheese which can be taken home as a souvenir of the day. Suitable for 1 – 6 par- ticipants of all ages and capabilities (though a lot of standing is to be expected). Groups can get involved in all aspects of making Lacey’s Traditional Cheese.

A typical course consists of a short tour and history of Richmond Station, Cheese Making, Cutting and Waxing cheese, and Cheese Grading. This unique opportunity is a great way for people to gain understanding of the cheese making process, and provides adequate skills to make their own cheese at home. When there are more than one participant the course encourages team effort and an enjoyable day to work closely with one another. For more information please see website [email protected]

HASSRA Leeds are offering this very different experience for members to have the chance to get a hands on experience and learn a skill that you may want to continue in your own home – or just be- cause you really love cheese!.

32 NEW - HASSRA Leeds opportunity Are you a Geocacher?

If you are, or if you want to become one, this is a call for interest. If there are sufficient numbers of people who want to become involved it may be possible to organise a weekend hotel break somewhere. This would allow for people to have a relaxing break while sampling something that is bit challenging and different before a relaxing stay in a hotel. Better than driving there and back in the same day. It is thought that Spring would be a good time to plan one of these events and we would be looking for a countryside location with nice circular walks. A few possibilities are - Ripponden (GC63F49) Holmfirth (GC1E346) Beverley (GC63G9D) Durham (GC2CD9C) Darwen (GC2WJ4T) Don’t know what geocaching is? Well it’s a growing “sport” where you search for a container using a GPS (Global Positioning System) device and information downloaded from the internet. Most are easy to find but some can be devilish. The numbers after the suggested will obviously only mean anything to current catchers but if it incites your interest and would like to give it a try we do have some rather old donated GPS’s to use. Anyone interested should contact John Belbin ([email protected]) (01282 867291) by the end of October 2015 so that a start can be made on searching for a hotel, after which another Advert with full details and prices will appear. You can get an idea though by looking at any of the Walking Club adverts. 33 Member Benefits

Ian volunteered to score and fairly soon regretted doing so!

50 Tuesday 5.15 - 5.45 pm Thursday 6.15 - 6.45 pm Friday 12.30 - 1.00 pm BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONS HASSRA TRIPS AND EVENTS

The following terms and conditions will apply to all events to ensure that every member has a fair opportunity to participate in events. The terms and conditions should be read in conjunction with the relevant booking form.

1. Wherever possible events will be advertised with a closing date for applications that is at least 4 weeks from the date first advertised, including proposed events where expressions of interest are being requested.

2. Persons wishing to travel together should complete one application form per room, submit their applications together, and determine a lead person who will be responsible for forwarding payments due and act as the contact on behalf of the group via a signed disclaimer agreeing to these terms and conditions.

3. A booking will not be accepted or entered in a draw without the correct deposit and signed disclaimer.

4. Once the closing date is reached, the number of applicants wishing to travel will be determined. Where there are sufficient places for all applicants, then deposit cheques will be banked and places confirmed.

5. Members should be aware that once deposit cheques have been banked they are not returnable and travellers will be liable to pay full price of the trip (unless the place is subsequently filled). Full price means the undiscounted "non member" price. Where necessary, HASSRA (Leeds) will provide an invoice for the full price for insurance purposes but travellers need to be aware that the cost of insurance, (if purchased), is non-refundable.

6. Travel operators will be asked to date insurance cover from the date on which they receive notification of the persons travelling. It is therefore essential to obtain adequate travel insurance before booking if you do not purchase the insurance offered.

7. Single supplements. There will be no member discount on supplements for travellers wishing to secure a single room. Where members indicate on the application form that they are willing to share a room with someone of the same sex, the organiser will arrange for pairing. If an individual has indicated that they are willing to share, they will not have to pay a single supplement even if no pair is available.

8. Where the number of applicants exceeds the places available, a random draw of application forms will determine those successful in receiving a place, subject to Clause 8. Cheques accompanying these applications will then be processed. Remaining applications will continue to be drawn at random to determine the order of the reserve list.

9. The trip organiser will be granted up to two places on that trip without entry into the ballot. An organiser is the person who arranges the trip on behalf of the HASSRA Events Committee, whether or not s/he is a member of the Committee.

10. Where expressions of interest have been sought for a proposed trip, if that trip is subsequently confirmed, applications received from those expressing interest prior to the closing date will be given priority to book before any unfilled places on the trip are advertised. On these occasions, once the closing date is reached, remaining places will be filled on a first come first served basis.

11. Members who have been unsuccessful in a ballot for a trip may record this on their application for the next trip, to the same destination, and will be given priority for available spaces.

12. Applications from solely non-member groups, i.e. not accompanying a full HASSRA member, wishing to participate in an event will be considered only in the event of places remaining after the closing date has passed.

13. The priority order will be: a) Organiser +1, b) Previously unsuccessful on similar trip (ballot if necessary), c) Prior registered interest (ballot if necessary), d) Other Members, e) Non Member groups.

14. Non-members may apply to travel at the discounted rate on an event provided that they satisfy the criterion for associate membership and send a completed application for membership together with the appropriate payment, on or before the closing date for the trip. Associate Membership will last for 12 months from the date of processing the application. The Committee reserves the right to determine specific criteria for prior membership on certain trips. Any such requirements will be notified in the advertisement. Participants are reminded to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner while attending HASSRA sponsored trips and events. Formal complaints may prejudice an individual's eligibility for future trips.
