HISTORY OF THE HOTEL 1486 The “Schwarzer Bock” was opened as a bathhouse, making it the longest-established business in the city. The first owner of the bathhouse was Mayor Philipp zum Bock. As he had black hair, his establishment became known as “Zum schwarzen Bock”, “schwarz” being the German word for “black”. 1712 After the damage wrought by the Thirty Years’ War, the building was rebuilt and then extended. 1736 The “Schwarzer Bock” flourished and was designated a “Bathhouse of the First Order”. 1818 Goethe took the waters at the “Schwarzer Bock” and penned the lines: “The primary duty of every bather is not to sit and think, but rather to bend to a higher purpose his wit, and make a merry life of it”. 1865 Dostoyevsky worked on his novel “The Gambler” while staying at the “Schwarzer Bock”. 1906 Untouched by world history, Wiesbaden became a city of “European design” and an international spa centre. The “Schwarzer Bock” boasted baths lit by electric light, lifts and 220 beds - at the price of 5 German marks for a room. 1945 – 1957 Following the end of the Second World War the Americans occupied the building for 12 years.
