COMMITTEE OPERATIONS

At the 2014 AGM:

 Finding a new Treasurer continued to be an issue. In the absence of anyone stepping forward at the AGM, John Grocott again volunteered to fill the position on an acting basis. However, as has been the situation in the last few years, John’s temporary role became permanent and we have been fortunate to have our financial affairs in his capable hands – and the same applies to SSCL as John has also continued as its Treasurer. Some progress was made in reducing the Treasurer’s load by shifting the accounting system to Xero, with Rob Leys providing John with continuing support.

 There were only minor changes in the make-up of the committee for the season. Scott Pawson stood down after four years as Club Captain, but his input wasn’t lost to the club as he redirected his energies to assisting Nev Lyons with coaching the Premier team. Thanks Scott. Matt Richens stepped up to replace Scott as Club Captain.

 New faces on the committee were Jared Cookson, Ben Hanham and Jared Van Eyk Menkman. Hayley Jensen shifted to Australia in February and Jacinta Savage agreed to replace her on the committee as the Women’s Club Captain. Matt Friedwald resigned post season in August due to a work transfer to Auckland. Our thanks to Hayley and Matt for their contributions, both on and off the field.

At the first meeting Howard Morel was elected Chairperson of the committee.

Four subcommittees operated throughout the season. Their responsibilities are given below, with convenors as noted:

 Activities Subcommittee (social and cricket events, publicity and promotion; communications: convenor – Matt Richens)

 Business Subcommittee (finance, sponsorship & fund raising, subscriptions, planning & club management, membership, club records, liaison with SSCL board: convenor – Howard Morel)

 Cricket Subcommittee (training & coaching, player recruitment, team entries, grounds & practice facilities, gear, school liaison, awards, disciplinary; convenors – Matt Friedwald / Steve Graham)

 Junior Subcommittee (managing the operations of the Junior cricket section; convenors – Henk Stoffers / Dave Teale)

Committee Attendances

During the year, until the printing deadline for this report, only four meetings were held and attendance is recorded below (with apologies tendered recorded in parentheses). Playing ECSCC Annual Report 2014/15 Page 4 and work commitments affected the attendance record of a number of committee members. Nev Lyons was invited to attend meetings given his key role as Coaching Manager.

PRESIDENTS REPORT

This season was one that was in many ways going to be overshadowed by the One-Day World Cup being held in New Zealand and, more importantly, in Christchurch, including the opening of the Hagley Oval ground and the return of . Both were a huge success. It’s my hope that the enthusiasm surrounding the event will encourage players to return to the game and for children to give it a go!

The season didn’t quite reach the heights of the past in terms of silverware but our Premier Men managed to win the T20 competition, go very close in the one-dayers and make a late run at the two-day title. This was very credible considering the changes in personnel from the previous season. We were fortunate to acquire two very strong players, with the return of Neil Broom and the acquisition of Michael Davidson, a former St Albans stalwart.

Most of our teams were in the hunt for silverware as the season drew to a close with the “Hooters” overcoming lack of numbers to win the grade. President’s Gold made the top four but fell short. Our 2A Grade side emulated the Premier Men in winning the T20 competition. They performed creditably considering they lacked numbers at times.

Our women’s section continued to battle for players and consistency but worked hard to finish fourth in the one-day competition and third in the T20 competition - even some of the mums took the field!! For next season, the club has engaged Tasmeen Granger, a Zimbabwean player / coach to help boost our performances and to encourage girls to play cricket and join our club. For the girls below Premier, we joined with Lancaster Park Woolston and entered a combined Division One side. Although they didn’t have much success they stayed together and are likely to be playing again next season. I must thank Steve Graham for his tireless work in keeping our girls on the field.

Our Juniors continue to function well, led by Henk Stoffers and Dave Teale. They have again managed to ensure that we have good coaches and managers for our teams. We face many challenges associated with our geographic area and the impending closure of some of our feeder schools. There are no simple solutions but the passion of our coaches and managers along with a robust development plan should ensure players will both enjoy the experience of playing for Easts and become better players. Our life member John Grocott was honoured with Life Membership of the Canterbury Junior Cricket Assn. earlier this year, a well- deserved and overdue honour!

Representative men’s honours went to Neil Broom, Tim Johnston, Leo Carter and Ken McClure. We also had great representation in the Canterbury Magicians with Hayley Jensen, Olivia McGoverne and Jacinta Savage.

No club can be successful without many people contributing their time to ensuring that we provide modern facilities and develop an atmosphere that promotes success. Thanks to all those who have given their time. Thanks to Nev Lyons, who continues to produce talented players along with Ryan Burson and Scott Pawson, and to Pete Dunell who prepares excellent playing and practice facilities.

I would ask that our players consider the efforts of our volunteers by spending some time at the clubrooms after games to enjoy the company of both your opponents and to socialise with other members of our club.

COACHING AND SELECTION

Men’s Grades

Selectors Premier / 2A grades: Captains, Nev. Lyons, Scott Pawson and Ryan Burson Other grades: Captains

The coaching and selection plan

The 2014/15 season really started at the end of the last when I began discussions with Scott and Ryan to see if they would be interested in becoming part of a new coaching / management group for the 2014/15 senior men’s squad. They were delighted to be asked and, once the club committee approved this option, we got together to draw up a plan of action. The plan was to cover coaching and training, match-day management and also establish a selection policy that would involve the team captain (Darren Broom).

With four of our most experienced players retiring after the Premier side won the NZ club cricket one-day championship in April 2014, we were left with a balance of young but talented players. With hard work and the right ethic, we were confident that the team had the potential to succeed. Both Scott and Ryan were outstanding East Shirley premier players and I was sure that their input would be beneficial for the development of this new group, and help impart the hardness and work ethic we have been known for in the past. I wasn’t disappointed.

Pre-season activity summary: . Assessment of player availability . Four players away playing in England . Make up of senior squad . Make-up of the new senior team . Premier and 2nd grade Captains . Vision for the team / squad . Goals for team / squad . Winter pre-season training at CCA with four nets. (Starting 1st week August to last week September) . Due to players away and retirements in August we invited the 3rd team to the club indoor training and overall attendance was excellent with new members to the club arriving.

Practices: . Practices during the year were well attended on Tuesdays / Thursdays . Thursday nights were usually a full attendance and we required four practice nets, which it made it impossible to allocate nets to other club teams. . Practice decks and the Burwood main cricket block were excellent but irrigation is the key to maintain consistency. The club has re-addressed this issue driven by the club grounds curator.

Selection: The three coaches and captains attended to this task, trying to ensure the team was well- balanced while also giving our future young Canterbury players an opportunity to show their skills each week. I believe it worked well. It was always our intention to put the best balanced teams on the field each week, with players having to earn their positions. Two or three ECSCC Annual Report 2014/15 Page 11 players in the 2nd team were close to senior selection during the year but consistency is the key and the panel had to make a couple of hard calls.

Premier Grade

20/20: This was the first of the competitions to be decided, following a mixture of one and two day games. The team really delivered with a convincing and winning final performance against Burnside. The development shown by the younger players was evident and was an encouraging sign for the rest of the season. The experience gained last year in Auckland showed in the way the team played for each other, displaying the killer instinct and attitude needed to triumph. An outstanding team win, and the first trophy in the cupboard.

One - dayers: We believed that this trophy was again within our grasp, as we had won eight of the nine round-robin games, with some of the most outstanding cricket we have played for many years. However, it wasn’t to be and we were beaten in the semi-finals by LPW, the better team on the day. At crucial moments in this game, we did not deliver the hardness and self- belief we have been developing – we have to learn from this for the future. While the team was disappointed with this overall result, it must be said that some of the bowling, batting and fielding during this competition was nothing short of outstanding.

Two - dayers: Going into the last couple of games we had a very good chance of winning this trophy. To have a chance of winning we had to make the play by setting totals and declaring, and while this created two exciting finishes at Burwood Park, in the end, we fell short and finished fourth in the competition. The team backed the captain and this positive play all season, and while we came up short this year, we will win more games than loose with this attitude. Again this season, I believe that it was only one or two lapses in a few games that kept us from achieving the outcomes we’d set at the start of the season. While this was disappointing, I’m sure the players will have learnt from this.

Overall: An excellent season, and with this young team showing so much promise for the future it makes coaching a real pleasure. The input from Scott and Ryan gave the team a real edge and will drive the player’s development at a much quicker pace.

Highlights were:  Winning our T20 trophy for the first time in the Club’s history.  Three players making the Canterbury first class team (Neil Broom, Tim Johnston and Leo Carter).  Some outstanding batting and bowling performances, with four hundreds (Leo Carter two, Ken McClure and Tim Hampton-Matehe one each) and three bowlers going into the last game with around the same total of (38) each (Nathan McNichol, Jed Roberts and Tim Muir).  The selection of two players (Tim Muir and Nathan McNichol) in the CMCA club team of the year.

2nd Grade

This team had a difficult season, largely due to the shortage of players. Unlike previous seasons, we did not have the surplus players needed to cover for player movements due to rep. selection, injuries and unavailability. As a result, we struggled to but a balanced and ECSCC Annual Report 2014/15 Page 12 consistent team on the paddock each week. Nevertheless there were some very good performances and the team was well led by Jared Cookson who is emerging as a very good future leader and senior player.

The club is going to have to work hard next year to overcome these issues, and to rebuild the depth required in the squad to replace movements in the premier team.

Positives

We now have a large base of young talent which gives the Club an exceptional foundation to build on. The club needs to be very patient over the next couple of years as we continue to develop this young talent. We have already had a great start to the year with three young players picking up 2015/16 Canterbury contracts, and congratulations to these boys (Tim Johnston, Leo Carter and Ken McClure). They have set the standard for the rest of the East’s squad to aim at.

Next season, the development of a new and strong leadership group will be one of the main challenges for the coaches and will require the commitment by all the players. The key to their future successes will rest on them continuing to upgrade their skills and, most of all, respecting each other on and off the field.

Other club teams

It was great to see the 3A team train every Wednesday night and work exceptionally hard, being rewarded with the silverware at the end of the season. They were also worthy winners of the Max International College of Fitness Club Trophy for Club Team of the Year. There are many fine players in this team - well done boys.

This year we also had two 3B Grade teams made up of players of Indian descent. They trained on Wednesday nights with good turn-outs each week, and were prepared to listen and learn. They worked really hard and both practiced and played with some enjoyment. One of the sides was involved in a couple of on-field incidents late in the season, and what the club has learnt from the experience is that we need to help them more in terms of game day protocols and expectations. It may be that we look to appoint an older club member as “mentor” to look after them, as they are good club men with much enthusiasm for the game. I really enjoyed coaching them.

Women’s Premier Grade

The women’s competition is dictated by the small number of players available in Canterbury and when the first class players are away from their club teams the competitions are impacted in a massive way. The easts teams are very young and have huge talent, which will be a positive for the coming years. Steve Graham, as their manager, is doing a great job.

For the 2015/16 season we are keenly looking forward to the arrival of Tasmeen Granger, a young 21 year-old player from Zimbabwe whom we have contracted as player-coach. We are sure that with the backing of all the players Tasmeen will make a huge difference, not only to the women’s premier squad but to all the young women and girls playing cricket in the club.

ECSCC Annual Report 2014/15 Page 13

Coaching club coaches

This year, “coaching the coaches” was again somewhat disappointing. After a fantastic turnout on the first night, when I believe every one left with a better knowledge of the skills required to pass on to their junior teams, the second night turnout was very disappointing. I believe this left many of our junior coaches a bit short on the batting skills needed to pass on to their young and developing players. We need to run these sessions early in the season while enthusiasm is high.

Last Say

My thanks to the loyal supporters and club committee who, every year, turn up at each game supporting the senior team. This is appreciated and has a huge impact on our team and club culture. Many thanks to Scott and Ryan who have made an unbelievable impact on the squad and to Darren Broom for his positive altitude and leadership. In this he was supported by one of our more experienced players, Michael Davidson, who is having next season off for family reasons. He will be missed.

Thanks also to our senior scorer, Jared Larsen who, with his loveable tablet does a fantastic job each week maintaining a live scoring link. I know that many team supporters who can’t be at the game are keen followers. This is now linked to our new website. Also thanks to the club’s Burwood Park grounds curator Peter Dunell who produces the best club cricket block in town and similar quality grass practice wickets.

PREMIER GRADE

The 2014/2015 season started with a hiss and a roar for the new look East Shirley Premier Men’s side, as we set about rebuilding after the retirements of four senior players: Captain Tim Papps, D. Lyons, G. Powell and C. Stevens.

We had the return of an old hand from bygone days in Neil Broom, and also welcomed back Tim Muir from his studies down south. This pair were followed two weeks into the season by St Albans legend and ex Canterbury first class player Michael Davidson (the original artist). Not to mention a self-styled pig farmer from Waimate, in the form of Nathan McNichol

The two-day competition started in the first weekend of October and the side had agreed on mentally taking a positive approach to all forms of cricket this season, no matter the situation or format. Our first outing against Riccarton reinforced that idea, as we plundered 300/5 in 50 overs and then rolled Riccarton twice for an innings victory. Leo Carter showing he would be a force this season with a belligerent 75 and Neil broom also shone with 65 on his return.

The round three game vs Sydenham was a high-light as well, when Tim Muir put on a masterclass of leg spin bowling to take 8-30. It would be easily the best spell of spin bowling seen in this competition for a while and, although the pitch was favorable, it was a real performance of note and one which gave the team a 10 victory and an early finish!

We then stayed in the hunt throughout the season, and were still on track for the title with two rounds to go. However, a costly 5 run defeat to St Albans in the penultimate round evaporated our chances – this game was the low-light of the season but one which I’m sure our young players will learn a lot from. We ended up coming 4th in the two-day competition but with our positive brand of play and willingness to push for outrights it won’t be long before we have that mug back in our glass cabinet.

We again played the Twenty20 competition over Labour Day weekend, which wreaks havoc with player availability. Nevertheless, even with a few comings and goings we managed to put a strong eleven on the park on each occasion which speaks volumes to the depth of our wider squad. Tim Muir continued his fine bowling form on some real dustbowls at Burnside oval and seems to have the Sydenham boys in his pocket as he picked up 4-10 to send us through to the final against Burnside West. We put in a fine all-round performance to take out our first Twenty20 title with Mike Davidson showing some real clutch at the death to get us through.

I believe our one-day campaign was equally as impressive, as we won eight from nine in round-robin play and qualified top of the table. The boys never scored below 200 during this phase of the competition, consistently topping 250 - and against Burnside West, who have a strong bowling attack, we hit up over 300, led by Leo Carter’s maiden senior ton of 116. It was a testament to the attacking brand that we all bought into at the start of the season. ECSCC Annual Report 2014/15 Page 15

In the semi-final we played the old enemy in Lancaster Park, and in a round when all Canterbury Kings players were available, we faced a pretty formidable side who were too good for us on the day.

Notable performers from the one-day campaign were Leo Carter and Ken McClure with the bat, with Kenny also grabbing a first senior 100, and also Tim Hampton-Matehe consistently scoring at the top. Tim Muir and Nathan McNichol were standouts with the seed, ably supported by the old man Davidson, TJ and Benny Hanham.

Our season was only possible due to the services again of Nev Lyons, our senior coach and man manager. Nevvy, as we all know by now, puts in a power of work and does it all. He keeps the boys on their toes and regularly has a pork chop hanging round his neck by the end of the day.

Also a mention to Scotty Pawson and Ryan Burson in their new roles as batting and bowling coach respectively It’s huge to have legends of the club sharing their knowledge with the next generation, and your efforts this year were hugely appreciated.

Thanks also to Pete for producing the best surface in town and to the club committee and all involved with making the club what it is, a great place to enjoy the game we play.

Winter well and look forward to the coming season.

Cheers

2A GRADE

An up and down season for the second grade side was lined with silver in the form of the Twenty20 title.

The highlight of the 2014-15 season was the undefeated run through the Twenty20 competition with some outstanding individual performances along the way.

Ben Hanham only made one appearance for the second side but what a performance it was. The century he whacked at Burwood Park against Riccarton in the Thursday night twilight fixture was special. It came off only 44 deliveries and he ended up finishing on 122 from 53 balls.

Jared Van Eyk Menkman’s individual display in the match against Marist-Harewood at Hospital Corner was belligerent. He fell six runs short of a century trying to put another ball over the rope. He then took 8/4 in four overs with the ball.

Another notable performance was Hayden Clark’s match haul of 13/25 against Marist- Harewood in the two day match, which was completed inside the first session on the second day.

Two Australians joined the side and both were handy acquisitions with Lachy Taylor offering handy off-spin and a steady option at the top of the batting order. Brad Wright was a key player through the season with his attacking middle-order batting and aggressive hit the deck bowling.

Youngster Reuben Spicer was a welcome addition to the side, straight out of Shirley Boys’ High School, and showed enough potential in the few games in seconds to earn a call-up to the premier side. Other Shirley Boys’ youngsters Rhys Shannon and Cullen Sheahan were also good additions to the side after Christmas.

The inclusion of the lads from Otago University back in Christchurch for summer was the key to the success in the Twenty20 competition. The Marsh brothers, Dexter and Casey, along with Jeremy Duncan made contributions to the side along the way including an incredible catch on the boundary in front of the pavilion at Burwood Park No. 1 by Duncan.

The side was captained by Jared Cookson who helped orchestrate the Twenty20 win and chipped in with the bat on many occasions. He finished as the side’s top run scorer for the season with 520 at an average of 30.5.

The one and two day competitions were a struggle at times, on and off the field. Trying to pull together 11 players was difficult and on behalf of the side I would like to thank Jared for trying to manage this throughout the year.

3A GRADE

The 3A team built on the success of last season with a back-to-back grade win, and crowning as the East Shirley Team of the Year for the third successive season.

However it wasn’t all smooth sailing. The 2013/14 post season saw a number of players move on and we were looking rather thin on numbers, even in danger of not entering a side. But through rallying phone calls and meetings, we enticed fresh meat into the side in the form of Mike O’Connor, Liam Ireton, Shaun McMahon and Josh Coleman, and along with the comeback of stalwart Nick Bates we were set to go. Later in the season the injection of some older heads; Craig Stevens, Daniel Lyons, Mitch Petheram and Blair Harkerss boosted our squad into a surge towards the top four and eventual win.

On the field, the early part of our season consisted of a number of good performances, followed by three losses that all came down to the last over of the game - two of those saw us in positions where you’d expect the game to be in the bag, but alas it wasn’t. That saw the focus of our season change to a fight for fourth spot with Sumner, behind the big boys of Predators, OBC Boon, and new comers Marist- Harewood.

Once secure in the top four, the side never looked back. In the remaining four matches of the season we scored over 700 runs while only losing 5 wickets along the way. This included the satisfying achievement of twice beating the Predators side by 10 wickets, in consecutive weeks, to make our third 3A final in a row.

The final was played away against Marist-Harewood and unfortunately for them, but not for us, they were unable to produce a full strength side for the final. While they competed well, we put together a strong performance and dispatched them by 7 wickets with around 15 overs to spare.

Individually there were a number of performances across the season to mention. On the batting side, DJ Lyons was the big fish - he bullied attacks and finished at the top of the tree in terms of averages, 568 runs @ 51.6. Opening pair Jase Riach and Murray Seaton also became rather greedy at the crease and compiled 673 @ 42.1 and 869 @ 51.1 respectively. Between these three it was difficult for anyone else to get much of a look in. Nevertheless, at times, all of the others in the top six contributed with crucial innings.

Jase picked up the highest score of the year overall with 117, which is a fine effort for a 40 over innings, while Matt Friedwald’s 85 at Halswell was an excellent knock, as was DJ’s 90 against Sumner.

On the bowling side there are a stack of impressive figures. Matt Friedwald topped the wickets column with 32 @ 12.8, ahead of Richard Papps 30 @ 11.1, Rob Leys 30 @ 17.4 and the ‘’Autumn Leaves’’ of Liam Ireton picked up 26 wickets @ 14.96. It is worth mentioning that Richard’s wickets came from five matches fewer than Matt or Rob, so his ECSCC Annual Report 2014/15 Page 23 effort was possibly the best. Once again Jase Riach produced excellent results too, and in hindsight he should have bowled more overs.

The best performance with the ball belonged to Rob Leys, taking 6-14 against Sumner on Burwood 2. Rob seemed to have the ball on a string against Sumner, also picking up 3-1 in the return match against them, the one run coming from a tough leg-side wide call. He would also have had four wickets on that day if only the skipper could hold on to the easy chances.

Credit must also be paid to all our support crew. We always have an excellent team that come to our games or pay close attention to our results from afar, and we thank you again for this encouragement and support year after year.

The season was capped off by being awarded the East Shirley Team of the Year crown. It is one in which we take a lot of pride in winning, as being part of East Shirley is something we all love, and the competition from other teams, particularly the Senior men, is tough.

We possibly take for granted how lucky we are to be a part of such a fantastic club, but it is easy to see that the wonderful conditions, facilities, and people of Burwood Park are always the best in Christchurch, if not New Zealand. Thank you to the hardworking people that make this possible.

Well we don’t usually focus too much on the win/loss ledger when evaluating the season as that’s not what it’s all about, but, what the heck, this time we will. What a bounce back this season was compared to the last! We went from just two wins to nine wins, with the stats telling the story – see records list below.

Ok, it wasn’t all plain sailing. After starting and finishing the season with a hat-trick of wins the middle stages were a bit barren at times, despite often being in good positions. Some victories were comfortable, like our first win being a comprehensive 100+ run victory at home over LPW to get the season off to a great start given the all-round performances. Some were tight, with a close-run chase against OBC at Somerfield Park. Some were controversial, as in the controversial Duckworth-Lewis number, with Sydenham Cardinals having to be dragged off in deteriorating conditions as we chased. And one was a blinder in the form of a 280 run win over Sydenham Hospital.

The team pulled together well after acquiring several new players in the draft, mainly in the form of prolific wicket taker Arun Bhardwaj, and the man who gave it 100% whatever he was doing, Vinod Singh. Kasun Danceniya rejoined us toward the end of the season after his second grade sojourn, and Clayton Verster joined us as our South African import and left arm spinner. We also made good use of the McMahon brothers from the club’s 3A team.

Now for the notable performances. The two outstanding individual efforts were, firstly, Arun’s 6/32 at Burwood, three in our first up win, backed up by four more wickets the following week. He was on track for fifty wickets for the season, finally settling for a still remarkable 43 after missing a couple of games through injury (he’s more careful with cooking oil now). The second was Bernard Rose’s towering 178* on Burwood 2 as we totalled 349/1 - Nick Cottam out cheaply for two fat ladies - with Bernie picking up the Outstanding Performance at Burwood award at club prize-giving as a result.

Naturally, others contributed throughout the season with the bat, none more so than Nick Cottam who totalled over 800 runs, with eight fifties illustrating his consistency. Evergreen Indian Rajeev Varma also scored well, threatening to top the averages at one point. Sudath Wijewardene saved his best for a blistering fifty in our T20 win over OBC. Tony Chester was the glue at number three, with the second wicket partnership often being the best one.

In addition to Arun, on the bowling front Brian Cairns picked up 25 wickets, which equalled the previous best individual effort. He bowled at either end, for whatever spell at any time as required, which was much appreciated. Although just playing five games, it was enough for Tony Gray to take the double of best average and (equal with Rajeev) best economy, seeming to specialise in being available to play Hornby. Bernard had the only five wicket haul as part of arguably the best all round effort.

We do, of course, need to acknowledge the efforts of all who took part, since as is always the case everyone contributed at some point. This includes those who played a few games as required and able to, such as Alan Needs, Don Vattala, Gaurang Pandya, Chit Wickramarachi, Vinay Varma and Angus McLeod. Bryce Nicholson even took a catch. This list would not be complete without thanking Anne McLeod for once again scoring our book in just about every game.

PRESIDENTS GOLD

The 2014/15 season was challenging in many respects for the Presidents Gold side. Over the last few years the number of players available for the side has dwindled and we are becoming more reliant on part time players and the odd person to fill in. While it makes it challenging at times, the enjoyment of playing cricket and each other’s company is still there.

We played well in the round-robin competition and, other than St Albans, we were competitive and beat the top teams in the grade. We eventually finished fourth with 12 wins from 18 games, but with a bit of luck we could easily have finished higher than that. We had probably run out of steam in the top four competition at the end of the season but did well to finish third, which, overall, finished off a satisfactory season.

Craig Gibb and Arthur Daly are the backbone of the team. These two players are amongst the best players in the grade and their performances this season were head and shoulders above all other players in the team. Craig scored 900 runs for the season at an average of 50, and scored two centuries. He also collected 18 wickets along the way. Arthur scored 307 runs and took 37 wickets at an average of 11. These are a couple of outstanding performances and it remains a pleasure to play alongside them each week. Other key players such as Howard Morel, Steven Booth, Garry Hooper, Alan Hemingway and Steve Barry made significant contributions during the season. Richard Cherry and Garry Dentice joined the team during the season and they added to the team as well.

Overall, it was an enjoyable season. The grade has had changes made to it in an attempt to make it less repetitive and hopefully more enjoyable. These changes were well received and hopefully will continue.

Presidents Gold play well, compete with all teams and have a good time on and off the field.

Finally, once again a big thank you to Donn Leckie, whose role as Manager seems to get more challenging every year. This season he even managed to play four games for us and somehow scored two runs. It is very generous of him to retire from work this year so that he can become a fulltime selector and manager in the 2015/16 season. Thanks for all of your work Donn.

I look forward to seeing you all again in October.

WOMEN’S SECTION REPORT

Women’s Representative Honours 2014/15

White Ferns Hayley Jensen Canterbury Hayley Jensen Magicians Olivia McGoverne Jacinta Savage

Canterbury Olivia McGoverne U21 Jacinta Savage Venetia Stoffers

PREMIER GRADE

This season was punctuated by injury, illnesses, unavailability - and few wins.

It was also Olivia McGoverne’s first season with the Magicians and the Canterbury U21’s. And long-standing Magicians representative Jacinta Savage was thrown the Magicians’ keeper’s gloves. Both women played well at those levels, including long partnerships together in the U21’s. Hayley Jensen also played for the Magicians, and Venetia Stoffers was called into the U21 tournament.

Last season the Premiers played in the final, losing only four games all season. This season, with largely the same players, the Premiers won only four one-day games, and two T20’s. However, three of the one-day wins were the three last games of the season, against three separate clubs: Old Collegians, Sydenham, and then Saint Albans.

Hayley suffered a terrible knee injury playing in Melbourne in October, following her White Ferns’ tour of the West Indies. The injury would play a part in her not being re-selected to play against the touring England team. Hayley did her best to contribute to the Premiers while injured, even keeping while Jacinta played in the U20 New Zealand Indoor Cricket World Cup team. Hayley’s last games before returning to Melbourne in February were the two double-header T20 wins, scoring 43 and 35 respectively.

Despite the team winning few games, individuals still shone. Gina Aldersley, with 20 wickets, was second by one wicket in the bowling leader-board for the 50-over competition. Hot on her heels was Olivia, third-equal on 19. Gina was the only player who played in all 16 games, including the four T20’s.

ECSCC Annual Report 2014/15 Page 33

Hayley Moore played 14 games for the Premiers, filling in so often from the Division One team, such was the need. Hayley was rewarded with the club’s Natasha Carruth Cup in part for her willingness to play Premiers, sometimes at short notice. Hayley also displayed adherence to the spirit of the game in umpiring, scoring and helping both senior women’s teams in whatever way she was asked.

The team played one game on Burwood 1, on the day the World Cup roadshow visited Burwood Park. Between selling sausages to Sir Richard Hadlee, three of the mothers, Felicity Davidson, Ann Thomas and Marian Tredinnick, took the field in turns for the Premiers. Felicity also batted at 11, possibly the only woman in the club’s history to debut for the Premiers on Burwood 1. The main highlight of the game was Jacinta’s 58.

Other highlights were:  Kayla Murray’s 72 on Burwood 2 against Sydenham.  Sandy Clark (25) and Jacinta’s (38) 74 opening partnership to set up the team’s first win against Sydenham at Sydenham Park.  Gina’s 4 for 28 including five maiden overs in the same game.  Jacinta’s 61 to win the T20 against St Albans, her 61 not out against Old Collegians and her 64 not out in the last game of the season against St Albans.  Amy Rendel’s 85 and 4 for 28 on Burwood 2 to beat Sydenham in a game where the Premiers included two blasts from the past, Kim Minogue and Jes Little.  Venetia Stoffers (43) and Jacinta (64) sharing a 105 run opening partnership to set up the win against the eventual championship winners St Albans in the last game of the season.

The contributions of Amy and Sam Case to the team in terms of ability and leadership cannot be understated. Ashleigh Clark also filled in for the odd game, taking three catches at keeper. All-rounders Alyssa Millard, Jess Davidson and Daisy Tredinnick, who all played 14 of the 16 games each, would have liked to have done better, but their contributions are certainly appreciated in a tough season. Toward the end of the season new player Brittany Graham added a new level of enthusiasm, outwardly rejoicing in well taken catches off her own batting.

The team ended the season well with the three consecutive wins and we look forward to further success at club and representative level. And the prospect of contracted player- coach Zimbabwean international Tasmeen Granger for the coming 2015-16 season is exciting new ground for Easts.

DIVISION 1 GRADE

This season’s women’s Div1 team has been a successful partnership between LPW and East Shirley. Both clubs are in a similar position with only enough for half a team below the Premier level. Thankfully, the team finished the season stronger than the start, both in numbers and obvious improvement, which bodes well for next season.

Selena Charteris of LPW and Stephen Graham of Easts set the team foundations, with the support of Metro and the two clubs. The team would practice at Burwood Park, and be coached by current and former White Ferns and Magicians, including Selena, Frances Mackay and Jacinta Savage. Easts provided the gear and Saturday’s team management, while LPW provided a club-neutral playing strip, and Selena set about recruiting girls to play the game. Ashley Whittaker’s mother Victoria became the team scorer, for which the team is certainly thankful.

The team played about 15 girls in the season. Some didn’t stay on, and for some games the team had to borrow players from OBC and Saints, and we are grateful to those two clubs for their help. However the team settled down in the second half of the season, made up of nine committed girls, helped by four junior Easts girls moving into the team on a permanent basis.

The team lost all of its games, but improvement toward the end of the season was obvious. The team bowled sides out in the last three games, and in the last game, played on Burwood 2, scored 100 runs. Bowling sides out and scoring 100 runs were targets the girls decided on themselves.

One earlier game stood out too, against OBC, at what was seemingly the girls’ home pitch, with seven games on St Alban’s Park 3. The pitch seemed to be the driest pitch in the city, and the girls became used to the pitch’s Lord’s rise at its northern end. While the records will show OBC won by one run, with help from some OBC girls playing for us the game actually resulted in an exciting tie.

The team will start next season in Division 2, to allow for more batting time at the crease. The clubs can look forward to further improvement and future successes from this team of girls wanting to improve their cricket.

JUNIOR REPORT

First of all, I would like to thank my friend Dave Teale for all the work he has done over many years for the Juniors. Dave has decided to step down and I will be very sorry to see him go. He is a man of many talents and will be sorely missed. Thanks Dave for all your great work.

So, in the next breath, I need to say “WE NEED SOME ONE TO FILL HIS SHOES”. Junior cricket doesn’t organize itself, so, if you want the kids to play cricket and you have some passion for the game, then don’t be shy. Please come forward and volunteer to give us a hand. It can be any capacity within the Junior Section – organizing, coaching or managing.

Teams Our numbers were again slightly down this season, but we still had 135 players from year 1 through to year 8. Not all teams ended up on top off their grade but overall we did very well. My thanks go to all the coaches and managers who gave their time and their skill and patience, to help guide these junior players. We can’t do it without you, so many thanks.

We had some outstanding performances this season, with Adam Poumaka 5 wickets for 10 runs, Harry Webley 80 runs, Mika McDonald 67* and 57*, Cooper Goldsmith 60 runs, Reuben Stoffers 53 runs, to mention a few. To all the players – well done and I hope you enjoyed the cricket with your teammates and you will be back for the coming season.

Sponsorship A special thanks to our sponsors. Your generous support was much appreciated. My thanks to Cricket Express, O’Sheas, Maharajah Restaurant, Subway Parklands, and McDonalds and I hope you will again be on board in the coming season.

Also a special thanks again to Barry the Batman for keeping our bats in good nick.

Representative players I’m sorry to say that we didn’t have too many reps. this season. However, those we did have performed well and did East-Shirley proud. The rep. players were: Lachie Shankland, Harry Webley, Adam Poumaka and Reuben Stoffers. Just a reminder to coaches and parents: Please nominate your kids for the trials, as playing in the CJCA tournaments is a good way of developing their skills. .

Prize-giving We did this on a Friday night and judging by the support on the night I think this was a success. My thanks to the volunteers who helped in the kitchen and selling raffles. And to all the parents who turned up and helped make this a great night.

The winners of the junior awards were:

Top Junior Awards Tracey O’Neill Cup : Junior Girl Player of the Year Olivia Nahr Hartley Trophy: Boys Year 8 Mitchell Power Paul Sullivan Memorial Trophy: Boys Year 7 Reuben Stoffers Howzat Trophy: Boys Year 5/6 Mika McDonald Ray Anderson Memorial Trophy :Coach of the year Andy McGregor

ECSCC Annual Report 2014/15 Page 39

While the year had its up and downs, I think that overall, with the support of parents and volunteers, it was a good year.

Finally, I’d like to thank my family for helping out - without their support and assistance running the Junior Section would very difficult, and we would not have had the successful year we did. However, the current situation is far from satisfactory. It needs to be said that we need to improve the Junior set up. We definitely NEED NEW BLOOD. My worry is that we are drifting along and that we need new people with new ideas to bring new life to the Juniors. I will keep going but need additional hands, so please come on board.

Hope to see all the players, parents and supporters back for 2015/2016. Let’s make it a great season - after all, we pride ourselves in being one of the best clubs in town!

TREASURER’S REPORT

The Club’s finances are challenging. The accounts are subject to audit at the time of writing. This year we have recorded a small surplus of $2278 compared to a loss of $2014 last year. However, this is mainly due to the Shirley Sports Club Ltd, who manages the clubrooms on our behalf, waiving rent for the 2015 year. Without this, another loss would have been recorded.

Income is down on 2015 with a reduction in fundraising and grants. This year unspent grants of $1250 (2014: $9500) have been carried forward and this is included as income in advance under current liabilities. Subscriptions are up, reflecting additional teams, and other income is similar to last year. Expenditure is down with no pavilion running costs. Other main items of coaching, gear and grounds are consistent with the previous year. Other costs are also generally consistent with the previous year although there are some variations.

Pavilion running costs normally charged by Shirley Sports Club Ltd (a related party) have been waived, by agreement, for the 2015 year. At the same time, outstanding rent accumulated over several years has been offset against our original advance to the company. This reduces our asset but also eliminates our outstanding liability. Details are set out in Notes 7 and 10 to the accounts. Future rents will be determined in consultation with member clubs based on funds required to manage the clubrooms effectively. This is to commence from the year beginning 1 April 2015. A new formula is to be established.

The statement of financial position clearly sets out the situation at balance date. The liquidity position has improved with the reduction of current liabilities and there are funds in the bank. A GST recovery is due and inventories are up on last year. The special funds are on term deposit with Westpac and earn a small amount of interest. Details are shown in the notes. Since balance date a grant of $13,913 has been received from Air Rescue Trust and a special donation of $10,000 received from the Horseshoe Lake Trust. This has improved our liquidity position.

Overall, we have managed satisfactorily in the 2015 year but we still need to generate more income to cover costs, particularly with pavilion running costs to be included again in the coming year. A surplus position is essential to maintain equity and cash flow. Losses are not sustainable in the long run as we will run out of money. This is something the incoming committee will need to address. It looks like another challenging year ahead.

The unaudited accounts of Shirley Sports Club Ltd are also included in the Annual Report. These show a loss after depreciation and reflect the matters regarding rents for member clubs mentioned above.

In conclusion, our thanks to the gaming trusts and Canterbury Cricket Assn for their support as set out in the notes. Also Andy Innes of Cricket Express, Allan Stroud of O’Sheas and all others for their continued support and sponsorship. These are acknowledged in more detail elsewhere in the report. My thanks also to club members for their assistance during the year, particularly Harry Burson, Donn Leckie, Steve Graham and Henk Stoffers for the work they do collecting subs, handling hospitality activities, the Xmas hamper fundraising and helping with other matters. A good effort by all concerned and much appreciated.

7 PAVILION REDEVELOPMENT & SHIRLEY SPORTS CLUB LIMITED

The Club entered into a Heads of Agreement and Joint Venture Agreement with the Shirley Rugby Football Club Inc. for the redevelopment of the existing pavilion in 2004. The project commenced in March 2005 and was completed in November 2005. Under the agreement, the pavilion is managed by the Shirley Sports Club Limited, a non-profit company established for this purpose. Each Club has equal shareholding and appoints three Directors. Under the agreement, “ownership” of the pavilion passed to the company at an agreed value and a notional gain on sale resulted. This was treated as an increase in member’s funds in the 2006 year. During the current year a further advance of $5,000 has been made and, by agreement, rent owing totalling $27000, net of GST, has been deducted. At balance date advances made by the Club to Shirley Sports Club Limited totalled $254,660 (last year $276,660).

SHIRLEY SPORTS CLUB LTD.

The main focus of the Board over the last year has been the Burwood Bowling Club Proposal. We made the decision earlier this year to discontinue our pursuit of this asset. The Sports Club Board had already spent $30,000 on feasibility studies and felt that there were too many uncertainties on both the future of Burwood Park and the ability to get a favourable change of land use ruling from the Council without further considerable expense. The Burwood Bowling Club members were also becoming frustrated at the constant delays in getting a decision from the Sports Club and also the continuous obvious vandalism that was happening at their very visible premises. Its subsequent demolition and the reinstatement of the land has now been completed.

The finances of the Sports Club continue to be tenuous with both shareholder clubs failing to meet their rental commitments. This situation is unsatisfactory and the Board is in the process of having discussions with both clubs on an acceptable level of annual rental that can be paid to the Sports Club. We as a board are mindful of the fact that both clubs are struggling with their funding levels but with reduced bar takings and increasing costs these club rentals are essential in providing and maintaining our clubrooms

The only loan left outstanding is to the Christchurch City Council. The balance at 31st July 2015 is $5,000, which is due for payment in August 2015. The clubrooms will be freehold from next month!

Following our withdrawal from negotiations with the Burwood Bowling Club both Steve Barry and Alan Albertson have resigned from their positions as Directors of the Sports club. I thank them for their contributions especially Steve who has been involved with the Board from the outset of the new building project.

The Cricket club have appointed Tim Grocott to the Board as one replacement and are to appoint another director in the near future.

My thanks also go to my other fellow Board members: John Grocott from the Cricket Club and Deane Jordan and Steve Clark from the Rugby Club and Shona Milne our Secretary.
