Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.116 : 28 to 30 January 2017 New Zealand vs. Australia - ODI at

Lockie Ferguson at Eden Park – earlier, his innings of just 3* enabled an invaluable 35 to be added for our last 2 . Then bowling, he captured the wickets of Maxwell (score 54/5) and Heaslett (at 67 for 6) finishing 10. 0. 44. 2. His fastest ball was timed at 149.9 kph.

NEW ZEALAND 286/9 (50) M Guptill 61 (107), N Broom 73 (120), J Neesham 48 (58), M Stoinus 3/49 (10) AUSTRALIA 280/10 (47) M Stoinus 146* (161), J Faulkner 25 (69), P Cummins 36 (30), T Boult 2/58 (9), L Ferguson 2/44 (10), M Santner 2/44 (10) – T Latham 3 catches, 2 stumpings RESULT: NEW ZEALND WON BY 6 RUNS

Having dominated 90% of the game NZ deserved the win. However, Marcus Stoinus nearly stole it in the last few overs – some sensational hitting which brought him 146*. One has to criticise our bowling – too many short balls, too many down leg etc etc but it was great theatre! And plaudits to Lockie and to Mitch Santner – superb bowling from both. AND to – 3 catches and those 2 stumpings. Latham kept very tidily indeed, some great takes down leg, and was very clearly superior to Handscombe, the Aussie’s stand in ‘keeper. What an example to the young of one playing oneself in before unleashing – Stoinus was superb, Munro, take note. Did Southee and Boult have a plan when taking the ball in those closing overs? Yorkers on leg stump have, traditionally, been the recommended line and length but those are exactly what Stokes bowled to Brathwaite in the 2016 T20 World Cup Final and the result is history! But, with two catches put down and a run out missed, our Skipper kept his cool, secured the run out and we all went home happy!

The Black Caps have never allowed their supporters to watch easy. But, far more often than not, they have been successful especially at Eden Park – remember: 2015 Cricket World Cup at Eden Park: vs Australia Australia 151 (32.2) NZ 152/9 (23.1) NZ won by 1 vs South Africa 281/5 (43) NZ 299/6 (42.5) NZ won by 4 wickets (D/L – last ball) February 2016 at Eden Park: vs Australia NZ 307/8 (50) Australia 148/10 (24.2) NZ won by 159 runs

Back in Feb. 2007 NZ won all 3 games played at home – by 10 wickets at the Basin, by 5 wickets at Eden Park (ran down Aussie’s 336/4) and by 1 wicket at Seddon Park (Australia 346/5, Hayden 181, NZ 350/9 McMillan 117, McCullum 86*). Poor Michael Hussey never captained Australia again but he did, through his outstanding and personality become “Mr Cricket”. And we do, sometimes win over the Tasman – your Editor was at the WACA to see Dan Vettori guide the last ball for 2 to secure a 1 wicket win and then, at the MCG, to see Grant Elliott (61* and Neil Broom – yes Broom! – 26*) bring us a resounding 5 wicket win. Aussies showed more resolve after “Black Saturday” to win at Sydney and Adelaide – the series was tied 2 all after the 5th game at the Gabba was abandoned due to rain. In those ODIs mentioned above, we had 4 wins by just 1 wicket or on the last ball – Monday’s win was by the comfortable margin of 6 runs and, with 3 overs still available, was quite tame in comparison – no need to panic, and Kane didn’t!

28 Jan. & 4 Feb. At top of the Table, we have everything to play for. University won the toss and batted – we started well Rav picked up the first wicket and Ganesh showed infinitely better form and zest from the previous week. Wickets fell to Ganesh regularly – maily catches to Schalk who took 5, an outstanding effort. Finn Allen, 17 year old recent Aces debutant was snared early. Rav gave Ganesh good support and Josh skittled Dhadwal and had an excellent spell. All through this Beecroft (Auckland U19) batted aggressively hitting 13 fours in his 76 until Ganesh had him caught at 116. Six down – time to wrap it up? No – they staged a recovery, 150 before the 7th wicket fell. Dench chanced his arm attacked our Skipper’s offies and with the tail wagging briskly, AUCC’s total reached a respectable 240. Flynn (also Auckland U19) and Tim made a very sound and promising reply but spin was Flynn’s undoing at 70. Sam was very soon caught and Jesse bowled – the openers’ good work being quickly undone, 80/3. Fortunately Lalit came to the crease, and with Tim who was relishing his retun from injury, played each ball on it’s merits, spinners lost their spite and stumps were drawn at 115/3 with no furher alarums. Tim has reached his 50 and Lalit has 14 on the board off 24 balls. They will resume next Saturday.

Howick Pak. won the toss and batted through the day being dismissed only just before stumps were to be drawn after 98 overs had been bpwled. Great kudos to Billy Sanger for his early break throughs and to Jack Coman standing in for Karun who has an injured knee. A very notable performance by Jack – very much his best figures in Senior cricket. Huge credit also goes to Rudi – after bowling 9 overs very economically and without luck, he fielded a sharp return off his own bowling, and has a minor fracture of a finger as well as splitting the webbing between his fingers. Despite this he continued to field for the remainder of the day. Our spinners Razin and Henk bowled lengthy spells – Razin in particular being very economical. Congratulations to HP’s McKenzies, father and son – a to the elder and an aggressive 90 to the youngster.

HOWEVER, AUCKLAND CRICKET PLEASE NOTE, IT WAS EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING THAT A TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH SHOULD NOT HAVE OFFICIAL UMPIRES. IT DENEGRATES A GAME OF THIS STANDING THAT PLAYERS HAVE TO STAND AND MAKE DECISIONS THAT ARE, AT TIMES, HGHLY CONTROVERSIAL.

Next week it will be Parnell’s turn at the crease and for our batting prowess to be demonstrated.

Wanganui Collegiate vs. Parnell CC Colts – 17 & 18 Jan.

Wanganui Collegiate School – Founded 1854, on this campus from 1911

Last month, thanks to a long time friendship between Ian Trott, our Head Coach, and Barry Touzel, Director of Sport at Wanganui, we has the pleasure of hosting a team from the School. The visitor stayed at College Rifles and games were played on the Tuesday and Wednesday, 17 and 18 January. Your Editor is working from memory – no scorebooks so no individual details:

DAY 1. GAME 1. OD – 50 Overs: Wanganui Collegiate 82 Parnell 83/0 Win to Parnell by 10 wickets

GAME 2. T20 Won by Wanganui Collegiate in the last over

DAY 2. GAME 3. OD – 40 Overs: Won by Wanganui Collegiate, again in the last over!

Three excellent games – the Wanganui lads were obviously “still on the bus” during Game 1. but came back splendidly to take out 2. and 3.! Some very good and exciting cricket was played and in first class spirit – a real credit to Angus, the Wanganui Skipper, and to Parnell’s Callum and Sam. Great parental support on both sides and huge thanks to Donna Trott and her helpers for their catering on the two match days. An invitation has been extended to Parnell to take two teams south in January 2018 and we very much look forward to playing at Wanganui.

GAME 1. Parnell’s openers unbeaten – Nathan Robinson freeing his arms & Sam Wilson who played some great shots & very adept at keeping the strike

Hawkes Bay Tournament – Grade 6. Parnell Maroon

Parnell Maroon headed to Hawkes Bay again for this mid January Tournament. A great success – as Shona Regan’s great photos indicate.

the Quiz Last Week:

Ganesh Ratnasabapathy bowling for our Prems vs Ellerslie last Saturday – his action bears similarity to that of one of the greatest, and fastest, “quicks” of all time.

QUESTIONS/ ANSWERS IN RED 1. Who is the old timer? Frank ‘Typhoon’ Tyson 2. Who did he play for and which series did he dominate so significantly? Born in Bolton, Lancashire, that County didn’t want Tyson and he joined Northamptonshire in the early 1950s. He was unquestionably the fastest bowler of his age – he startled the 1953 Aussies when they played Northhants as his pace was extreme. Len Hutton took him to Australia ahead of Trueman. The 1st Test was a disaster, England losing by an innings. The 2nd was a different matter – Tyson cut his run down but didn’t sacrifice pace – and the Aussies were shattered. His figures were 4/45 and 6/85 and, then, in the 3rd Test at Melbourne he delivered the coup de grace in the Australian’s 2nd innings by taking 6 for 16 in just 6 overs in his opening spell on the last morning.

WINNERS – CONGRATULATIONS TO: Craig Speakman (who took the photo of Ganesh above) then Graham Aveyard of our Pressies and then Alan Graham of Parnell long ago and now Karori CC.

This Week’s Quiz:

Continuing on the subject of pace, several of the past great fast bowlers had very short Test careers, a few others had greater staying power. The following are career Test figures for comparison:

Tests Wickets B/B – inng. B/B – match Average

1. 17 76 7/27 10/130 18.56 2. 18 87 6/41 10/99 22.09 3. 21 78 6/32 10/124 28.35 4. 46 178 6/11 11/78 25.69 5. 51 200 6/46 9/105 28.00

QUESTION: Identify these five bowlers who all bowled at express pace and name the countries they played for.

No prize but, just an opportunity to put your name up in lights! Answers to the Editor – email [email protected]

Postscript – Monday’s ODI & Lockie

SAM PERRY IN “THE GUARDIAN”: On Stonius’ innings “In short, it had everything - patience, composure, planning, then power.”

Then

“It must be said though that New Zealand dominated this second innings for its majority. Boult started things off, and Santner made matters difficult to an Australian batting group woefully exposed without the pillars of Smith, Warner and Khawaja. Lockie Ferguson impressed most, achieving searing pace and the scalps of Maxwell and Heazlett to finish with 2-44 from his 10.”

Your Editor took some photos of Lockie whllst at Eden Park:

MESSAGE FROM DIANNE McDERMOTT BARBADOS!!!! The trip of a lifetime!

If you have ever watched a televised cricket match from the West Indies and thought to yourself, one day I would love to go there – this is your chance!!!! The Fingletoads have travelled to Barbados before for a Vintage Cricket Carnival, and because of the many requests for us to return there, we have entered two teams in the Golden Oldies Cricket Festival in Barbados in May. The hotel we are booked into - The Radisson, is the Festival hotel and is idyllically placed on the edge of the most beautiful little beach. With an extended pier at the end of the hotel that hosts live music and drinks each evening; the open sided restaurant where breakfast is served; to the marvellous positioning enabling easy access to St Lawrence Gap to enjoy all the restaurants and bars there; the cbd of Bridgetown where Duty Free shops abound; Hole Town – home to spa resorts and the incredible homes of the rich and famous; this truly is the destination that has something for everyone! We have two teams entered for the Festival – one is touring; assembling in Los Angeles and playing what will be a great fixture and fabulous day at Woodley Oval with our longtime friends The Hollywood Golden Oldies. Anyone who has been with the Toads through Los Angeles before will know how incredibly hospitable this team is and how much they love hosting us. They have some special catering, after match entertainment arranged and most importantly – they are organising for some of their older players to be there to catch up with everyone. From there we head to Miami where a fixture against the Miami masters is scheduled. A fantastic opportunity to visit this diverse and colourful City with it’s great architecture, amazing shopping and restaurants and of course, the plastic pink flamingos! The touring team then heads to Barbados where we are joined by a number of travellers either cruising, or flying in for the ten days there.

Whichever appeals to you – the full tour; part tour or even just the Festival week – take this opportunity to travel to Barbados for what really will be the trip of a lifetime. The full final itinerary is attached and details all prices – however, I am only an email away if you require special pricings to suit your dates.

Peter and I will be leading the team with fantastic support from Rex & Jan Hooton and Geoff & Sandy MacLeod-Smith. Others committed are:-

David Miller (Christchurch, NZ) Peter McDougall (Sydney, Australia) Carl Duncan (Melbourne, Australia) Tony and Sandy Bateman (Vancouver, Canada) Greg and Margaret Schumacher (Reporoa, NZ) Andrew and Sharon Welch (Taupo, NZ) John Steer (Auckland, NZ) Graeme Young (Rotorua, NZ) Dan Healey (Auckland, NZ) Roger Carroll (Auckland, NZ) Tony Walsh (Christchurch, NZ) Tony Adcock (Christchurch, NZ)

We now also have a full time broker working with us – Sarah is bonded through Flight Centre and so there is full TAANZ protection on all she does, but more importantly – she has full access to incredible fares through Flight Centre. She has already done most of the bookings I am aware of for this trip and she has managed to find some fantastic options and routes for those who have booked. I cannot recommend her highly enough. Please let me know if you would like her details.

I have rooms on hold at all the hotels until the end of January, so please let me know if you are interested in joining us and I can help with any queries you might have, any advice you might need and also, encouragement to be part of the teams going to this fantastic destination!
