Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.116 : 28 to 30 January 2017 New Zealand vs. Australia - ODI at Eden Park Lockie Ferguson bowling at Eden Park – earlier, his innings of just 3* enabled an invaluable 35 to be added for our last 2 wickets. Then bowling, he captured the wickets of Maxwell (score 54/5) and Heaslett (at 67 for 6) finishing 10. 0. 44. 2. His fastest ball was timed at 149.9 kph. NEW ZEALAND 286/9 (50) M Guptill 61 (107), N Broom 73 (120), J Neesham 48 (58), M Stoinus 3/49 (10) AUSTRALIA 280/10 (47) M Stoinus 146* (161), J Faulkner 25 (69), P Cummins 36 (30), T Boult 2/58 (9), L Ferguson 2/44 (10), M Santner 2/44 (10) – T Latham 3 catches, 2 stumpings RESULT: NEW ZEALND WON BY 6 RUNS Having dominated 90% of the game NZ deserved the win. However, Marcus Stoinus nearly stole it in the last few overs – some sensational hitting which brought him 146*. One has to criticise our bowling – too many short balls, too many down leg etc etc but it was great theatre! And plaudits to Lockie and to Mitch Santner – superb bowling from both. AND to Tom Latham – 3 catches and those 2 stumpings. Latham kept very tidily indeed, some great takes down leg, and was very clearly superior to Handscombe, the Aussie’s stand in ‘keeper. What an example to the young of one playing oneself in before unleashing – Stoinus was superb, Munro, take note. Did Southee and Boult have a plan when taking the ball in those closing overs? Yorkers on leg stump have, traditionally, been the recommended line and length but those are exactly what Stokes bowled to Brathwaite in the 2016 T20 World Cup Final and the result is history! But, with two catches put down and a run out missed, our Skipper kept his cool, secured the run out and we all went home happy! The Black Caps have never allowed their supporters to watch easy. But, far more often than not, they have been successful especially at Eden Park – remember: 2015 Cricket World Cup at Eden Park: vs Australia Australia 151 (32.2) NZ 152/9 (23.1) NZ won by 1 wicket vs South Africa South Africa 281/5 (43) NZ 299/6 (42.5) NZ won by 4 wickets (D/L – last ball) February 2016 at Eden Park: vs Australia NZ 307/8 (50) Australia 148/10 (24.2) NZ won by 159 runs Back in Feb. 2007 NZ won all 3 games played at home – by 10 wickets at the Basin, by 5 wickets at Eden Park (ran down Aussie’s 336/4) and by 1 wicket at Seddon Park (Australia 346/5, Hayden 181, NZ 350/9 McMillan 117, McCullum 86*). Poor Michael Hussey never captained Australia again but he did, through his outstanding batting and personality become “Mr Cricket”. And we do, sometimes win over the Tasman – your Editor was at the WACA to see Dan Vettori guide the last ball for 2 to secure a 1 wicket win and then, at the MCG, to see Grant Elliott (61* and Neil Broom – yes Broom! – 26*) bring us a resounding 5 wicket win. Aussies showed more resolve after “Black Saturday” to win at Sydney and Adelaide – the series was tied 2 all after the 5th game at the Gabba was abandoned due to rain. In those ODIs mentioned above, we had 4 wins by just 1 wicket or on the last ball – Monday’s win was by the comfortable margin of 6 runs and, with 3 overs still available, was quite tame in comparison – no need to panic, and Kane didn’t! Men’s Premier Grade: Hedley Howarth Trophy – Two Day, Major, Championship 28 Jan. & 4 Feb. At top of the Table, we have everything to play for. University won the toss and batted – we started well Rav picked up the first wicket and Ganesh showed infinitely better form and zest from the previous week. Wickets fell to Ganesh regularly – maily catches to Schalk who took 5, an outstanding effort. Finn Allen, 17 year old recent Aces debutant was snared early. Rav gave Ganesh good support and Josh skittled Dhadwal and had an excellent spell. All through this Beecroft (Auckland U19) batted aggressively hitting 13 fours in his 76 until Ganesh had him caught at 116. Six down – time to wrap it up? No – they staged a recovery, 150 before the 7th wicket fell. Dench chanced his arm attacked our Skipper’s offies and with the tail wagging briskly, AUCC’s total reached a respectable 240. Flynn (also Auckland U19) and Tim made a very sound and promising reply but spin was Flynn’s undoing at 70. Sam was very soon caught and Jesse bowled – the openers’ good work being quickly undone, 80/3. Fortunately Lalit came to the crease, and with Tim who was relishing his retun from injury, played each ball on it’s merits, spinners lost their spite and stumps were drawn at 115/3 with no furher alarums. Tim has reached his 50 and Lalit has 14 on the board off 24 balls. They will resume next Saturday. HOWICK PAKURANGA 312/10 (98) W McKenzie 134, K McKenzie 90, Billy Sanger 22. 6. 50. 3, Jack Coman 16. 5. 43. 5 PARNELL to bat DAY 1. – to be continued next Saturday, 4 Feb. from 11 am. Howick Pak. won the toss and batted through the day being dismissed only just before stumps were to be drawn after 98 overs had been bpwled. Great kudos to Billy Sanger for his early break throughs and to Jack Coman standing in for Karun who has an injured knee. A very notable performance by Jack – very much his best figures in Senior cricket. Huge credit also goes to Rudi – after bowling 9 overs very economically and without luck, he fielded a sharp return off his own bowling, and has a minor fracture of a finger as well as splitting the webbing between his fingers. Despite this he continued to field for the remainder of the day. Our spinners Razin and Henk bowled lengthy spells – Razin in particular being very economical. Congratulations to HP’s McKenzies, father and son – a century to the elder and an aggressive 90 to the youngster. HOWEVER, AUCKLAND CRICKET PLEASE NOTE, IT WAS EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING THAT A TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH SHOULD NOT HAVE OFFICIAL UMPIRES. IT DENEGRATES A GAME OF THIS STANDING THAT PLAYERS HAVE TO STAND AND MAKE DECISIONS THAT ARE, AT TIMES, HGHLY CONTROVERSIAL. Next week it will be Parnell’s turn at the crease and for our batting prowess to be demonstrated.
