An unusual case report and review of the literature Cinthia Dickson1, María Rosa I. de Elías-Costa2 ABSTRACT Dermatophilosis is an acute, subacute or chronic skin disease affecting a wide range of species of Keywords: animals and man. It is caused by a Gram (+) bacteria of the order of the Actinomycetales named Dermatophilus congolensis. Presenting as an acute, subacute or chronic dermatosis affecting Dermatophilus primarily cattle, but a wide variety of domestic and wild animals, and humans, as well. It is congolensis, distributed worldwide but more prevalent in the humid tropical and subtropic areas. It is essential dermatophilosis. to emphasize the importance of this disease in livestock industry and leather production. The disease is reviewed and an unusual case is reported (Dermatol Argent 2010;16(5):349-353). Date Received: 27/7/2010 | Date Accepted: 27/05/2011 Introduction The disease was first described in 1910 by Van Saceghem1 in the Belgian Congo as "contagious derma- titis" (dermatose contagieuse) in cattle. In 1926 the term nodular disease estreptotricosis or lumpy wool disease to refer to the disorder observed in sheep, a name that was later abandoned to avoid etiological confusion.2 Since then, there have been numerous reports on a wide range of animals, including terres- trial and aquatic mammals and repiles as well. The most affected animals are cows, sheep and horses, but it is also observed in goats and pigs. The disease is rarely found in dogs and cats.3 In humans very few cases have been reported.4-9 The disease has worldwide distribution but is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions with high levels of humidity.

Manure is often contaminated with veterinary antibiotics which enter the soil together with antibiotic resistant bacteria. However, little information is available regarding the main responders of bacterial communities in soil affected by repeated inputs of antibiotics via manure. In this study, a microcosm experiment was performed with two concentrations of the antibiotic sulfadiazine (SDZ) which were applied together with manure at three different time points over a period of 133 days. Samples were taken 3 and 60 days after each manure application. The effects of SDZ on soil bacterial communities were explored by barcoded pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA gene fragments amplified from total community DNA. Samples with high concentration of SDZ were analyzed on day 193 only. Repeated inputs of SDZ, especially at a high concentration, caused pronounced changes in bacterial community compositions. By comparison with the initial soil, we could observe an increase of the disturbance and a decrease of the stability of soil bacterial communities as a result of SDZ manure application compared to the manure treatment without SDZ. The number of taxa significantly affected by the presence of SDZ increased with the times of manure application and was highest during the treatment with high SDZ-concentration.

To isolate strains, Marine agar medium was basically used and cultivated at 37℃ and pH7 for several days aerobically. After single colony isolation, totally 49 pure single-colonies were iso- lated and phylogenetic analysis was carried out based on the result of 16S rRNA gene DNA sequenc- ing, indicating that isolated strains were divided into 3 phyla, 13 families, 15 genera, 34 species and 49 strains. Proteobacteria phylum, the main phyletic group, comprised 83.7% with 8 families, 8 genera and 26 species of Aeromonadaceae, Pseudoalteromonadaceae, Shewanellaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, Mor- ganellaceae, Moraxellaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, and Vibrionaceae. To confirm whether isolated strain can produce industrially useful enzyme or not, amylase, lipase, and protease enzyme assays were per- formed individually, showing that 39 strains possessed at least one enzyme activity.

    The BK BioReactor A Mobile Research Library for the Unseen THE BioNETWORK Microbiology of the Gowanus Canal Nucleus - The BK BioReactor N: Bio’reac’tor; an engineered device or system that supports a biologically active environment, esp. Nodes - Smart Docks to synthesize useful substances or to break down harmful ones. Nodes - Analog Docks The Gowanus Canal is scheduled to undergo dredging and sub-aquatic capping as part of the Horizontal Surfaces - Event Spaces USEPA Superfund Cleanup plan beginning in 2016. Alternatively microbiologists are drawing Vertical Surfaces - Projection Walls attention to polluted urban environments as they discover new communities of microorganisms capable of biologically processing pollutants. In reaction to the announcements to cap the canal, the study team commenced a microbiome analysis of sediment samples to ensure the taxonomy and potentially unique cellular functions of microbial communities in the Gowanus Canal are catalogued and studied before dredging operations eliminate access. The BK BioReactor is an infrastructural BioNetwork designed to support and propel these investigations into the future and generate an active space for the community to inquire, investigate and project findings back to the community. Akin to the canoes in which our D.I.Y. investigations occurred and central to the BK BioReactor is a roving watercraft, which is capable of docking at The BK BioReactor specific locations along the canal for sampling events and to showcase research findings through the activation of vestigial spaces. As an open platform to support individual study, community - Mobile Watercraft Original Sampling Site engagement, and synthetic biology, the mobile research station aspires to embody the public library - Research Library - Roll-Out Program Venue MAPPING MODES Sewers of the future.

The acyl type of the peptidoglycan in both cases was N-glycolyl. The major menaquinones were MK-11, -12 and -13. Mycolic acids were not detected. The G+C content of the DNA was 69–70 mol%. Comparative 16S rRNA studies revealed that the isolates belonged to the genus Microbacterium, that YM18-098T was closely related to the species Microbacterium lacticum and Microbacterium schleiferi, and that A5E-52T was closely related to the species Microbacterium aurum, Microbacterium aoyamense, Microbacterium deminutum and Microbacterium pumilum. DNA-DNA relatedness analysis showed that the isolated strains represented two separate genomic species. Based on both phenotypic and genotypic data, the following new species of the genus Microbacterium are proposed: Microbacterium flavum sp. nov. and Microbacterium lacus sp. nov., with the type strains YM18-098T (= MBIC08278T, DSM 18909T) and A5E-52T (= MBIC08279T, DSM 18910T), respectively.

Bullard, Assistant Professor of Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures Abstract In this dissertation, I investigated the distribution and prevalence of two human- pathogenic Vibrio species (V. vulnificus and V. parahaemolyticus) in non-shellfish samples including fish, bait shrimp, water, sand and crude oil material released by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill along the Northern Gulf of Mexico (GoM) coast. In my study, the Vibrio counts were enumerated in samples by using the most probable number procedure or by direct plate counting. In general, V. vulnificus isolates recovered from different samples were genotyped based on the polymorphism present in 16S rRNA or the vcg (virulence correlated gene) locus. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) was used to resolve the genetic diversity within V. vulnificus population isolated from fish. PCR analysis was used to screen for virulence factor genes (trh and tdh) in V. parahaemolyticus isolates yielded from bait shrimp. A series of laboratory microcosm experiments and an allele-specific quantitative PCR (ASqPCR) technique were designed and utilized to reveal the relationship between two V. vulnificus 16S rRNA types and environmental factors (temperature and salinity).

Interestingly, quantitative data on the microbial contamination of these sites is scarce. Here, 10 domestic washing machines were swab-sampled for subsequent bacte- rial cultivation at four different sampling sites: detergent drawer and detergent drawer chamber, as well as the top and bottom part of the rubber door seal. The average bacterial load over all washing machines and sites was 2.1 ± 1.0 × 104 CFU cm−2 (average number of colony forming units ± standard error of the mean (SEM)). Here we report the full characterization of a recently described multidrug resistant bacterium, Microbacterium yannicii, isolated from a CF patient who previously underwent lung transplantation. Results: Our strain PS01 (CSUR-P191) is an aerobic, rod shaped, non-motile, yellow pigmented, gram positive, oxidase negative and catalase positive bacterial isolate. Full length 16S rRNA gene sequence showed 98.8% similarity with Microbacterium yannicii G72T type strain, which was previously isolated from Arabidopsis thaliana. The genome size is 3.95Mb, with an average G+C content of 69.5%. In silico DNA-DNA hybridization analysis between our Microbacterium yannicii PS01isolate in comparison with Microbacterium testaceum StLB037 and Microbacterium laevaniformans OR221 genomes revealed very weak relationship with only 28% and 25% genome coverage, respectively. Our strain, as compared to the type strain, was resistant to erythromycin because of the presence of a new erm 43 gene encoding a 23S rRNA N-6-methyltransferase in its genome which was not detected in the reference strain. Interestingly, our patient received azithromycin 250 mg daily for bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome for more than one year before the isolation of this bacterium.

SOD is not one, but three separate, non-homologous 12 enzymes that perform the same function. Thus, the evolutionary history of genes encoding for 13 different SOD enzymes is one of convergent evolution, which reflects environmental selection 14 brought about by an oxygenated atmosphere, changes in metal availability, and opportunistic 15 horizontal gene transfer (HGT). In this study we examine the phylogenetic history of the protein 16 sequence encoding for the nickel-binding metalloform of the SOD enzyme (SodN). A comparison 17 of organismal and SodN protein phylogenetic trees reveals several instances of HGT, including 18 multiple inter-domain transfers of the sodN gene from the bacterial domain to the archaeal domain.
