For the moorland lover based on Man­ chester, the only part of the Pennine worth serious consideration begins at a point 6 miles SSW of Skipton on the crest of the Colne-Keighley road, or, as easier of access, at Colne itself, and after a crow's flight of 37 miles roughly SSE ends at the foot of the steep slopes of Kinder Scout a mile N of Edale. We can also include the moors which towards the end of that range extend E and SE to nurse the infant Derwent as far as Ladybower on the main road from Glossop to Sheffield. For about the first 28 miles of that Colne to Edale flight the moors are of the conventional type. Their surface consists mainly of coarse grass with bil­ berry and heather in various states of roughness, culminating in the robust tussocks known as Scotchmen's heads, or (more politely) Turks' heads, which when spaced apart at a critical distance slightly less than a boot's width, thereby tending to twist the boot when inserted between them, constitute the worst going in the Kingdom apart from the rock-and-heather mixture of the Rhinogs of North Wales.

Further three-day surveys were also being carried out in autumn/winter 2005-06, but the returns for these were not available at the time of writing this Audience Development Plan. Groups of visitors were randomly selected and asked ten questions in face-to- face interviews. Respondents were also given post-back questionnaires to fill in at home, containing a further 28 questions. The face-to-face questions all related to audience profile, while the post-back questions included some profile questions but also explored various aspects of the visitor experience. Altogether, 350 groups of visitors were interviewed. About half these respondents also returned post-back questionnaires. The Audience Development Plan sample At the time of writing this Audience Development Plan, the data from the PDNP survey had not been processed or analysed, but we were given access to the filled-in survey forms. We processed a sample of 100 face-to-face interviews with matched post-back questionnaires (35 Saturday visitors, 35 Sunday, 30 weekday) and 50 face-to-face interviews with respondents who did not return post-back questionnaires (15 Saturday visitors, 20 Sunday, 15 weekday).

An Introduction to Bamford Bamford is a village surrounded by outstanding countryside in the Peak District National Park; Bamford is situated 12 miles west of Sheffield, alongside the upper reaches of the River Derwent. The Derwent runs southwards to join the River Trent south of Derby; prior to Bamford, it has flowed through three 20th-century reservoirs constructed by the Derwent Valley Water Board; the southernmost of these - Ladybower reservoir – abuts Bamford. The gritstone escarpment Bamford Edge separates Bamford Moor (around 400m above sea-level) from, and dominates the skyline of, Bamford village. Win Hill (463m) to the north and Shatton Edge (400m) to the south are also visible from Bamford, contributing to the village being surrounded by hilly country on most sides. On the map at left, civil parish boundaries are in dark blue. Bamford’s existence was recorded, as ‘Banford’ - then a hamlet of just two households - in the Domesday Book in 1086. It grew when a corn- (later converted to cotton-) mill was built in the 1700s at Bamford weir on the Derwent. The mill closed in 1965, and its attractive buildings are now residential apartments. In the 1800s the Moore family, the mill’s owners, built houses for mill workers; consequently, Bamford has more terraced housing than is usual in a Peak District village.

    614 HIGH PEAK HUNDRED. in 1725, was discovered in 1781, quite perfect and petrified, retaining the flesh-colour as when entombed. The Vicarage is a neat house west of the church. The Wesleyan Methodists have a chapel erected in 1807, at a cost of £300, with sittings for 260 persons; about one half are free. The Endowed school is now taught on the National plan; Wm. Cresswell, master. The Girls’ National school is an old thatched building near the church; Mrs. E. Blackshaw, mistress. The Roman Catholics have a chapel in a rural situation, and there are ruins of ancient Catholic chapels at Over Padley and North Lees. A Fair is held on the first Friday after Old Michaelmas day, and if it falls on Friday, the Friday after; and the Feast on the Sunday before the fair. The Hall, a handsome mansion in the village, was rebuilt in 1844; it is the property and seat of John Spencer Ashton Shuttleworth, Esq. Camp Green, a little E. of the Church, is supposed to be the site of a Danish camp. This manor, Hereseige, was, at Domesday survey, the property of Ralph Fitzhubert. In the reign of Henry III. it belonged to the family of De Hathersage, whose coheiresses brought it to Goushill and Longford. In the reign of Henry VI. Goushill’s moiety belonged to the family of of Thorp, with remainder to Robert Eyre and his heirs. Sir Nicholas Longford died seized of the other moiety in 1481. The ancestors of the Duke of Devonshire purchased it of the family of Pegge, in 1705.
