Seasoned UEFA Europa League campaigners Villarreal have made their best ever start to a group, winning their first three games and scoring 12 goals in the process, but Matchday 4 hosts Maccabi Tel-Aviv will hope to put a brake on the Spanish club's charge to the knockout phase as they seek to consolidate their second place in Group I. • Villarreal defeated the Israeli side 4-0 at home on Matchday 3, striker Carlos Bacca taking his all-time tally of UEFA Europa League goals to 19 with a double before first European goals followed for teenagers Álex Baena and – on his continental debut – Fernando Niño. That win followed successes against Sivasspor (5-3 h) and Qarabağ (3-1 a), putting Villarreal three points clear of Maccabi, who had also won their first two games. Previous meetings • The clubs have been paired once before in UEFA competition, Maccabi drawing 0-0 at home on Matchday 2 of the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League before concluding their participation with an inconsequential 1-0 win at confirmed group winners Villarreal, Nick Blackman scoring the goal. • While Villarreal have faced no other Israeli clubs, Maccabi's first experience of Spanish opponents came in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup first round – their very first matches in the competition – when they lost 4-3 on aggregate to the Canary Islanders of Tenerife (2-3 a, 1-1 h). Maccabi have therefore drawn both of their previous home games against Spanish visitors. Form guide Maccabi • Maccabi made up for a disappointingly brief European campaign last season – eliminated on entry in the qualifying phase of both competitions – by retaining their Israeli league title in style to make it 23 championship wins in all. A third appearance in the UEFA Champions League group stage beckoned this term after new coach Giorgos Donis led them through qualifying ties against Riga (2-0 h), Sūduva (3-0 a) and Dinamo Brest (1-0 h), but they met their match in the play-offs, losing both legs to Salzburg (1-2 h, 1-3 a). • The Israeli champions are making their fifth appearance in the UEFA Europa League group stage. They have only progressed to the knockout phase once before, in 2013/14, and struggled in particular on their most recent appearance, in 2017/18, failing to score in their first five matches before signing off with that consolation win at Villarreal. • Maccabi have won only four of their 14 home games in the UEFA Europa League proper (D5 L5), though the 1-0 victory against Qarabağ on Matchday 1 ended a three-game sequence without a win or a goal. Villarreal • Villarreal finished fifth in the 2019/20 Spanish Liga to return to Europe after a season's absence and participate in the UEFA Europa League group stage for the eighth time. • The Spanish club have yet to finish outside the top two in their seven previous UEFA Europa League group campaigns and have gone through as section winners three times, including the most recent in 2018/19. Then they went unbeaten in collecting ten points to finish ahead of Rapid Wien, Rangers and Spartak Moskva before knocking out Sporting CP and Zenit and eventually crashing out to local rivals Valencia in the last eight (1-3 h, 0-2 a). Their best seasons in the competition were 2010/11 and 2015/16, when they reached the semi-finals. • Villarreal are on an unbeaten run of 12 UEFA Europa League group stage away matches (W4 D8), the last defeat on their travels at this juncture of the competition a 2-1 reverse at Rapid Wien on Matchday 1 in 2015/16. The 3-1 win against Qarabağ on Matchday 2 followed draws in all three games on the road in the 2018/19 group stage. Links and trivia • Villarreal striker Bacca is one game short of reaching 50 appearances in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final. • Maccabi summer signing Luis Hernández is a Spanish defender who has played in the Liga for Sporting Gijón and Málaga. Having started on Matchday 3, his record against Villarreal is now W2 D1 L3. • Hernández and Villarreal's Spanish international Pau Torres were central defensive partners for Málaga in the 2018/19 Segunda División. • Enric Saborit is another Spaniard in the Maccabi ranks. He played in his homeland for Athletic Club (2013–18) and on loan at Mallorca (2014/15). • Villarreal left-back Alberto Moreno was a member of the Spain side that won the 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Israel. • Villarreal have played more matches in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final, than any other club. This is

3 Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC - Villarreal CF Thursday 26 November 2020 - 18.55CET (19.55 local time) Match press kit Bloomfield Stadium, Tel Aviv their 78th encounter – six more than second-placed Salzburg. • The 12 goals Villarreal have scored this season – the most in the 2020/21 group stage – have lifted their all-time total in the competition to a record 136, seven more than Liga rivals Sevilla, who are the only club to boast more UEFA Europa League wins (42 to 41). • Villarreal coach Unai Emery has overseen 82 matches in the UEFA Europa League proper – 27 more than any other coach. He led Sevilla to all three of their trophy successes from 2013/14 to 2015/16 and was also a losing finalist with Arsenal in 2018/19.
