Frazel, Ph.D AN ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the role of Gregory I (r. 590-604 CE) in developing permanent ecclesiastical institutions under the authority of the Bishop of Rome to feed and serve the poor and the socio-political world in which he did so. Gregory’s work was part culmination of pre-existing practice, part innovation. I contend that Gregory transformed fading, ancient institutions and ideas—the Imperial annona, the monastic soup kitchen-hospice or xenodochium, Christianity’s “collection for the saints,” Christian caritas more generally and Greco-Roman euergetism—into something distinctly ecclesiastical, indeed “papal.” Although Gregory has long been closely associated with charity, few have attempted to unpack in any systematic way what Gregorian charity might have looked like in practical application and what impact it had on the Roman Church and the Roman people. I believe that we can see the contours of Gregory’s initiatives at work and, at least, the faint framework of an organized system of ecclesiastical charity that would emerge in clearer relief in the eighth and ninth centuries under Hadrian I (r. 772-795) and Leo III (r. -

DALE KINNEY Liturgy, Space, and Community in the Basilica Julii (Santa Maria in Trastevere) Abstract The Basilica Julii (also known as titulus Callisti and later as Santa Maria in Trastevere) provides a case study of the physical and social conditions in which early Christian liturgies ‘rewired’ their participants. This paper demon- strates that liturgical transformation was a two-way process, in which liturgy was the object as well as the agent of change. Three essential factors – the liturgy of the Eucharist, the space of the early Christian basilica, and the local Christian community – are described as they existed in Rome from the fourth through the ninth centuries. The essay then takes up the specific case of the Basilica Julii, showing how these three factors interacted in the con- crete conditions of a particular titular church. The basilica’s early Christian liturgical layout endured until the ninth century, when it was reconfigured by Pope Gregory IV (827-844) to bring the liturgical sub-spaces up-to- date. In Pope Gregory’s remodeling the original non-hierarchical layout was replaced by one in which celebrants were elevated above the congregation, women were segregated from men, and higher-ranking lay people were accorded places of honor distinct from those of lesser stature. These alterations brought the Basilica Julii in line with the requirements of the ninth-century papal stational liturgy. The stational liturgy was hierarchically orga- nized from the beginning, but distinctions became sharper in the course of the early Middle Ages in accordance with the expansion of papal authority and changes in lay society. -

Her mom had painted her skin green and outlined her eyes in purple paint. She wore tall, black boots underneath a long, purple dress. It was October 31st, and she was ready for trick‐or‐treating on Halloween night. “Makayyyla!” her mom called out from downstairs. Makayla’s two friends, Colden and Porter, had arrived. Colden stood in the doorway, his costume blowing in the wind. A white sheet hung over his head, and his eyes peered out from two cut‐out holes. Porter decided to dress like his favorite superhero, Batman. A black mask covered his face and a long cape trailed behind him. They carried plastic pumpkin bowls to collect candy later in the evening. The two boys greeted Makayla with equal levels of excitement. “Hi, Makayla!” Colden said. “You ready to go trick‐or‐treating?” Porter asked. She nodded her head and ran to grab her coat. “Let’s go, everyone!” her mom called out, and they all marched out the front door. All around them, children and parents walked from door to door in colorful costumes. Carved Jack‐o‐lanterns sat in front of houses, candles shimmering inside the orange pumpkins. 58 CHAPTER 2 Rome of the pilgrims and pilgrimage to Rome 2.1 Introduction As noted, the sacred topography of early Christian Rome focused on different sites: the official Constantinian foundations and the more private intra-mural churches, the tituli, often developed and enlarged under the patronage of wealthy Roman families or popes. A third, essential category is that of the extra- mural places of worship, almost always associated with catacombs or sites of martyrdom. It is these that will be examined here, with a particular attention paid to the documented interaction with Anglo-Saxon pilgrims, providing insight to their visual experience of Rome. The phenomenon of pilgrims and pilgrimage to Rome was caused and constantly influenced by the attitude of the early-Christian faithful and the Church hierarchies towards the cult of saints and martyrs. Rome became the focal point of this tendency for a number of reasons, not least of which was the actual presence of so many shrines of the Apostles and martyrs of the early Church. Also important was the architectural manipulation of these tombs, sepulchres and relics by the early popes: obviously and in the first place this was a direct consequence of the increasing number of pilgrims interested in visiting the sites, but it seems also to have been an act of intentional propaganda to focus attention on certain shrines, at least from the time of Pope Damasus (366-84).1 The topographic and architectonic centre of the mass of early Christian Rome kept shifting and moving, shaped by the needs of visitors and ‒ at the same time ‒ directing these same needs towards specific monuments; the monuments themselves were often built or renovated following a programme rich in liturgical and political sub-text. -

Why do we carve pumpkins at Halloween? Their origin comes from an Irish myth about Stingy Jack, who tricked the devil for his own monetary gain. When Jack died, God didn’t allow him into Heaven, and the Devil didn’t allow him into Hell, so Jack was sentenced to roam the earth for eternity. In Ireland, people started to carve demonic faces out of turnips to frighten away Jack’s wandering soul. When Irish immigrants moved to the U.S., they began carving jack-o- lanterns from pumpkins, as these were native to the region. But how did jack-o-lanterns become associated with Halloween? Halloween is based on the Celt festival Samhain, a celebration in ancient Britain and Ireland that marked the end of summer and the beginning of the new year on November 1st. It was believed that during Samhain, the souls of those, who had died that year travelled to the other world and that other souls would return to visit their homes. In the 8th century CE, the Roman Catholic Church moved All Saints’ Day, a day celebrating the church’s Saints, to November 1st. this meant that All Hallows’ Eve (or Halloween) fell on October 31st. -

Some see it as a living system to be taken care of; some see it as a living deity to be worshiped; some see it as Mother-Earth who provides and cares for her children; some see it as a combination of all three. Most strands of Paganism are rooted in European folklore, though some take their inspiration from North American, African, or other cultures. All claim to predate Christianity. It is estimated that there are over 250,000 Pagans in the British Isles today. God Pagans worship the divine in many different forms, both male and female. The most important and widely recognised are the God and Goddess (or Gods and Goddesses) whose annual cycle of giving birth and dying defines the Pagan year. Pagans can be pantheists, polytheists, duotheists, or monists. Most acknowledge the existence of Nature spirits — river spirits, dryads, elves, pixies, fairies, gnomes, goblins and trolls — and ancestral spirits and often engage with them in prayer. Some do not believe in deities at all but simply revere Nature. Creation The aim of Pagan ritual is to make contact with the divine in the world that surrounds us. Pagans are deeply aware of the natural world and see the power of the divine in the ongoing cycle of life and death. Pagans are, understandably, concerned about the environment — most try to live so as to minimise harm to it — and about the preservation of ancient sites of worship. -

Sheehan The month of November is usually associated with Thanksgiving Day in the United States and for most it means a meal with turkey. It is always good for us to be thankful to God for the many blessings he gives us. And it is always an appropriate holiday to spend with family. I will be with my two brothers, John and Joe, and their families in Kansas City. Happy Thanksgiving to all! But I want to bring attention to two other days that are of importance to Catholics in the month of November. These are All Saints Day which is a Holy Day of Obligation and the Feast of Christ the King. All Saints Day is a solemnity which honors the Saints of the Church and is always celebrated on November 1. In the early days the Christians were accustomed to solemnize the anniversary of a martyr's death for Christ at the place of their martyrdom. In the 4th century dioceses began to interchange feasts and to join in a common feasts. Frequently groups of martyrs suffered on the same day, which led to a joint commemoration. In the persecution of Diocletian the number of martyrs became so great that a separate day could not be designated for each martyr. The Church felt that every martyr should be venerated so it appointed a common day for all. It was Pope Gregory III who consecrated a chapel in the Basilica of St. Peter to all the saints and fixed the anniversary for November 1. -
