  • Apostolic Benediction to Our Beloved Brother-In-Christ, His Beatitude
BY THE GRACE OF GOD Ignatius Zakka I Iwas Patriarch of Antioch and All the East Supreme Head of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church No.E213/08 10-October-2008 Apostolic Benediction to our beloved Brother-In-Christ, His Beatitude Catholicos Mor Baselios Thomas I, Their Graces all our other Metropolitans, and our beloved Spiritual children: the Venerable Corepiscopos, the Dedicated Dayroye, the Esteemed Priests, the Rev. Deacons, the Devoted Nuns and all the faithful of our Jacobite Syrian Christian Church in India. It is with great delight that we are sending you this Apostolic Bull. In his Epistle to the Hebrews the Apostle St. Paul says: “Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God, consider the outcome of their life, and imitate their faith”. (Hebrew 13:7). Our Holy Apostolic church has always received and remembered the true messengers of Christ. All Saints were first recognized and accepted in the localities where they lived, worked and died. Later on, as the fame of their saintly lives spread out and as more and more people began to seek their intercession before God, their names were included in the prayers and Holy Services of our Church. We recall our Apostolic Bull No.E265/87 dated October 20, 1987 whereby we permitted you to include the name of St. Thomas the Apostle in the fourth diptych (Thubden) and the names of Patriarch St. Elias III, Maphriyono Saint Baselios Yeldo and Metropolitan St. Gregorios of Parumala in the fifth Thubden of the Holy Eucharist Service. Further by our Apostolic bull No.E71/00, dated April 4, 2000, we had declared the former delegates of the Holy Apostolic See of Antioch and All the East, Mor Gregorios Abdul Jaleel of Parur, and the Late Mor Osthatheos Sleeba as Saints.

Patriarchal Message His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, the Supreme Head of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church at KANDANAD In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, the One True God. Amen. Your Beatitude, our beloved Brother-in-Christ Catholicos Mor Baselios Thomas I, Their Eminences the Metropolitans, Very Reverend Corepiscopos, Priests and Deacons, Respected Nuns and our beloved spiritual children. We have great pleasure to be with you this day. Our St. Mary’s Jacobite Syrian Church, Kandanad, has always upheld the true faith and practices of our Holy Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch. Even in the midst of many hardships you have remained loyal to 1 our Holy Apostolic See of Antioch and All the East. This church has a prominent place in the history of our whole Church in India. Patriarchal Delegates sent from the Holy See of Antioch have visited and stayed at this church. The mortal remains of the late lamented Maphrian Mor Baselios Sacralla, whom we have declared a Saint, are entombed at this church. This tomb is a source of blessing for those who seek his intercession. The blessed tomb of the fourth native Metropolitan of our Holy Church in India – Mor Thoma IV - is also situated at this church. Two of our present Metropolitans – Their Eminences Mor Ivanios Mathews of Kandanad and Mor Clemis Kuriakose of Idukki – are members of this parish. Our beloved Church Secretary Bar Eto Mheero Commander Thambu George Thukalan also belongs to this parish. This parish is also the mother-parish of other parishes in and around Kandanad.

  • The Role of Syriac in India Before the Portuguese Period
ARAM, 21 (2009) 289-321. doi: 10.2143/ARAM.21.0.2047097 CLASSICAL SYRIAC AS A MODERN LINGUA FRANCA IN SOUTH INDIA BETWEEN 1600 AND 20061 Dr. ISTVÁN PERCZEL (University of Tübingen & Central European University, Budapest) I. INTRODUCTION: THE ROLE OF SYRIAC IN INDIA BEFORE THE PORTUGUESE PERIOD In South India there lives one of the most ancient Christian communities of the world. According to its own founding traditions it consists of two ele- ments: a majority descending from autochthonous Indian populations, among whom the first members were converted – according to tradition – by the Apostle Saint Thomas, and a minority descending from Syrian colonists who – once again according to the local tradition – arrived in India through the sea routes from Persia using the monsoon winds. These two communities are called the Northists (Vadakkumbhagar), that is, the autochthonous Indians, and 1 In whatever new material is presented in this study, the author has no personal merit. This material is the fruit of the joint efforts of a team, which, recently, has founded an Indian Asso- ciation for the Preservation of the Saint Thomas Christian Heritage. Unfortunately, each and every one of those who are working in the folds of and for this Association cannot be remem- bered by name. To mention only a few among many, particular gratitude is due on the part of the author to the following: to Mar Aprem, Honorary President of the Association, to whom he owes all his knowledge on the Chaldean Syrian Church in Thrissur and its antecedents, as well as on its documents; to His Beatitude, Baselios Thomas I, the Catholicos of the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church of India, who gave him access to Syrian Orthodox collections and inscrip- tions and who graciously allowed their publication; to Cardinal Joseph Varkey Vittayatthil and Bishop Thomas Chakiath, who gave him access to the Syro-Malabar collections; to the Prior and the Librarian of Saint Joseph’s Monastery Mannanam, Frs.

  • 1. Sts. Joachim and Hannah (? - ?)
    1. Sts. Joachim and Hannah (? - ?) St. Mary’s parents, Joachim and Hannah belonged to the royal race of David. They were a rich as well as a pious couple. Joseph is referred to as the son of Heli in Luke 3:2. In Matthew 1:16, Jacob is the father of Joseph to whom Mary was betrothed (Abdul Ahad, 1948, p. 56). Joseph is the son of Jacob by birth and he is the son-in-law of Heli. Heli was also known by other names like Joachim, Jonachir, Cleopas, Eliacim and Sadoc (White, 1991). Hannah, the mother of Mary, was also known by other names, Deena, Ann, Anne and Anna. The meaning of the Hebrew word Hannah is ‘blessing’. In their advanced age Joachim and Hannah came from Galilee and settled down in Jerusalem. Hannah was barren and suffered much humiliation because of that. Once her offering to the church was repulsed by the priest due to this reason (Abdul Ahad, 1948). Both husband and wife prayed and fasted before God to bless them with a child. Books like ‘The Gospel of James’ and ‘Book of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of the Saviour’ record that Joachim and Hannah 1 were without children and they fasted for forty days (White, 1991). According to another tradition when Joachim’s offering was refused by the priest he was deeply grieved and instead of returning home he went into the mountains to make his plaint with God in solitude. In the mean time Hannah also requested God to take away the curse of infertility and to grant them a child.
