BY THE GRACE OF GOD Ignatius Zakka I Iwas Patriarch of Antioch and All the East Supreme Head of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church No.E213/08 10-October-2008 Apostolic Benediction to our beloved Brother-In-Christ, His Beatitude Catholicos Mor Baselios Thomas I, Their Graces all our other Metropolitans, and our beloved Spiritual children: the Venerable Corepiscopos, the Dedicated Dayroye, the Esteemed Priests, the Rev. Deacons, the Devoted Nuns and all the faithful of our Jacobite Syrian Christian Church in India. It is with great delight that we are sending you this Apostolic Bull. In his Epistle to the Hebrews the Apostle St. Paul says: “Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God, consider the outcome of their life, and imitate their faith”. (Hebrew 13:7). Our Holy Apostolic church has always received and remembered the true messengers of Christ. All Saints were first recognized and accepted in the localities where they lived, worked and died. Later on, as the fame of their saintly lives spread out and as more and more people began to seek their intercession before God, their names were included in the prayers and Holy Services of our Church. We recall our Apostolic Bull No.E265/87 dated October 20, 1987 whereby we permitted you to include the name of St. Thomas the Apostle in the fourth diptych (Thubden) and the names of Patriarch St. Elias III, Maphriyono Saint Baselios Yeldo and Metropolitan St. Gregorios of Parumala in the fifth Thubden of the Holy Eucharist Service. Further by our Apostolic bull No.E71/00, dated April 4, 2000, we had declared the former delegates of the Holy Apostolic See of Antioch and All the East, Mor Gregorios Abdul Jaleel of Parur, and the Late Mor Osthatheos Sleeba as Saints. -

Davidic Descent and the Virgin Birth M. BLANCHARD Bishop Hollis' s question : ' How can Jesus be both born of the Virgin Mary and Son of David ? ' reminds one of that puzzling question with which Jesus confounded the Rulers of the Jews on that last day of controversy, the last Tuesday before His crucifixion: 'How can David's Lord be David's Son?' Both questions deal essentially with the same issue, and the same answer will be found fitted to both questions. If it be accepted that Mary was a descendant of David, the same as Joseph, immediately the problem is solved. But, that answer is rejected in the article which appeared in the April-June, 1959, issue of The Indian Journal of Theology. The evidence then for Mary's Davidic descent must be con sidered. No one questions the fact that Joseph's ancestry is traced back through David to Abraham in the first chapter of Matthew's Gospel. All agree likewise that Lukes list is radically different from Matthew's, and in inverse order. Matthew begins with Abraham and moves forward to Jesus; Luke begins with Jesus and traces the ancestry backward to Adam. On the face of it, their purposes seem to be different ; their methods, different ; and, we may suppose, the persons whose ancestries are traced, different. Basing their interpretation on the custom of Levirate marri age, attempts have been made along two lines to support the theory that both Matthew and Luke give the descljlnt of Joseph. First, some have suggested that the two men referred to, Jacob in Matthew and Heli in Luke, were step-brothers. -

The Authority of Scripture: The Puzzle of the Genealogies of Jesus Mako A. Nagasawa, June 2005 Four Main Differences in the Genealogies Provided by Matthew and Luke 1. Is Jesus descended through the line of Solomon (Mt) or the line of Nathan (Lk)? Or both? 2. Are there 27 people from David to Jesus (Mt) or 42 (Lk)? 3. Who was Joseph’s father? Jacob (Mt) or Heli (Lk)? 4. What is the lineage of Shealtiel and Zerubbabel? a. Are they the same father-son pair in Mt as in Lk? (Apparently popular father-son names were repeated across families – as with Jacob and Joseph in Matthew’s genealogy) If not, then no problem. I will, for purposes of this discussion, assume that they are not the same father-son pair. b. If so, then there is another problem: i. Who was Shealtiel’s father? Jeconiah (Mt) or Neri (Lk)? ii. Who was Zerubbabel’s son? Abihud (Mt) or Rhesa (Lk)? And where are these two in the list of 1 Chronicles 3:19-20 ( 19b the sons of Zerubbabel were Meshullam and Hananiah, and Shelomith was their sister; 20 and Hashubah, Ohel, Berechiah, Hasadiah and Jushab-hesed, five)? Cultural Factors 1. Simple remarriage. It is likely that in most marriages, men were older and women were younger (e.g. Joseph and Mary). So it is also likely that when husbands died, many women remarried. This was true in ancient times: Boaz married the widow Ruth, David married the widow Bathsheba after Uriah was killed. It also seems likely to have been true in classical, 1 st century times: Paul (in Rom.7:1-3) suggests that this is at least somewhat common in the Jewish community (‘I speak to those under the Law’ he says) in the 1 st century. -

We have great pleasure to be with you this day. Our St. Mary’s Jacobite Syrian Church, Kandanad, has always upheld the true faith and practices of our Holy Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch. Even in the midst of many hardships you have remained loyal to 1 our Holy Apostolic See of Antioch and All the East. This church has a prominent place in the history of our whole Church in India. Patriarchal Delegates sent from the Holy See of Antioch have visited and stayed at this church. The mortal remains of the late lamented Maphrian Mor Baselios Sacralla, whom we have declared a Saint, are entombed at this church. This tomb is a source of blessing for those who seek his intercession. The blessed tomb of the fourth native Metropolitan of our Holy Church in India – Mor Thoma IV - is also situated at this church. Two of our present Metropolitans – Their Eminences Mor Ivanios Mathews of Kandanad and Mor Clemis Kuriakose of Idukki – are members of this parish. Our beloved Church Secretary Bar Eto Mheero Commander Thambu George Thukalan also belongs to this parish. This parish is also the mother-parish of other parishes in and around Kandanad. -

Problems in the Genealogies from Jacob’s Sons to David Exodus 12:40-41 (ESV) says: “40 The time that the people of Israel lived in Egypt was 430 years. 41 At the end of 430 years, on that very day, all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.” However, some have said that the Israelites could not have been in Egypt for 430 years, because the number of generations given in some of the more prominent genealogies seems to be far too few for that time period, as can be seen in the table below. (See section 7 for more on this question.) The genealogies in the table are listed in order by years per generation, from least to greatest.1 There are not very many genealogies in which the birth years at both ends can be determined. I have tried to list all of these that I have found in this table. -

THE LIFE AND TIMES OF HH PATRIARCH MORAN MOR IGNATIUS ZAKKA I IWAS (April 21, 1933 – March 21, 2014) Thomas Joseph, Ph.D. Webmaster, SOR [ http://sor.cua.edu/ ] EARLY LIFE • Born on April 21, 1933 in Mosul • Fourth of 7 children in the Iwas family • Named ‘Senaherib’ after St. Behnam’s father • At 10 years age, father, Basheer Iwas, died • Mother died after two years • At 13, became a student at the Mor Aphrem monastery in Mosul while also a student at the Holy Virgin Mary’s and St. Thomas’ schools in Mosul. PRIESTLY FORMATION • Tonsured Rabban on June 6, 1954, at age 21 by Mor Gregorios Paulos Behnam • Taught Syriac and the Holy Bible at the Mor Aphrem monastery after graduation. • Called to serve as secretary to Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem I at Homs and then to Patriarch Ya`qub III. • Ordained monk priest by Patriarch Ya`qub III in 1957. • Studied Pastoral Theology and Oriental Languages at General Theological Seminary and NYU, 1960-62 • Observer at the Second Vatican Council in 1962 & 1963. EPISCOPAL LIFE • Consecrated Archbishop of Mosul on Nov 17, 1963 • Named Mor Severios Zakka • Represented the Patriarch at various meetings with the Roman Catholic Church • Honorary member of Pro-Oriente, Vienna • 1969 – archbishop of Baghdad and Basra; 1976 Europe; 1978 Australia • Member of Academy of Iraq Culture • Elected to WCC Central Committee in 1975 DISCOVERY OF ST. 1 A Syriac Poetic Eulogy for St. Gregorios of Parumala Dr. Meledath Kurian Thomas [email protected] Photograph of St. Gregorios of Parumala Funeral of St. Gregorios of Parumala - 1902 Taken for the Travancore Government - 1901 Dr. J.J. van Ginkel, affiliated fellow, faculty of humanities, Leiden Institute for Area Studies, the Netherlands, presented an interesting paper in the Eight World Syriac Conference held at Kottayam, India from 8 th to 16 th September 2014. The paper was titled as “A poetic Eulogy from Kharpat for Geevarghese Mar Gregorios (‘Parumala Thirumani’); reflections on the relations with and knowledge of Indian Syriac Church in the Middle East around 1900.” As the title indicates, it was about Metropolitan Geevarghese Mar Gregorios of Niranam, Kollam & Thumpamon dioceses of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church; popularly known as ‘Parumala Thirumani’ , the first Indian canonized Saint. The theme of his paper was about a eulogy written by Mar Dionysius ‘Abd an-Nur Aslan, West Syriac metropolitan of Harput, Homs and Diyarbekir for Parumala Thirumani around the time of the latter’s demise. Before entering into the topic under discussion, here is the brief life sketch of St. Gregorios of Parumala. St. Gregorios of Parumala was born on 15 June 1848 AD at Mulamthuruthy, Ernakulam district, Kerala, India. He received his minor order of deacon ( Korooyo ) on 26 September 1858 AD from Palakkunnath Mar Mathews Athanasios, Malankara Metropolitan and becomes a full deacon in 1864 AD by West Syrian bishop Yooyakkim Mar Coorilos. In the same year he was ordained as a priest by Palakkunnath Mar Mathews Athanasios followed by the elevation as Cor-Episcopus by Yooyakkim Mar Coorilos. -

INTRODUCTION: THE ROLE OF SYRIAC IN INDIA BEFORE THE PORTUGUESE PERIOD In South India there lives one of the most ancient Christian communities of the world. According to its own founding traditions it consists of two ele- ments: a majority descending from autochthonous Indian populations, among whom the first members were converted – according to tradition – by the Apostle Saint Thomas, and a minority descending from Syrian colonists who – once again according to the local tradition – arrived in India through the sea routes from Persia using the monsoon winds.
