Surname Forenames Dob Dod Source Notes Letter from Christine The Revd. John Jennings was a Canon of Westminster from 1837- Reynolds, 1883 and Sub-Dean from about 1880-83. He was born in 1797 or Assistant Keeper of the 1798 the son of John Jennings of Lluest-Hen, Cardiganshire. He was Muniments, Westminster educated at Trinity College Dublin and received his M.A. in 1832. He Abbey was curate of West Meon in Hampshire and then curate of St John the Evangelist Westminster. He became Rector there in 1832 and held that post (together with the Abbey Canonry) until his death on 26th March 1883. He was buried at Lyne, near Chertsey in Surrey. He married twice. His first wife was Jane, daughter of Pudsey Dawson from Langcliffe Hall in Yorkshire. I am afraid we don’t know the name of his second wife or how many children Jennings had. However, one daughter by Jane was Louisa Lavinia Esther Evans Jennings. She married Alexander Wylie in Westminster Abbey on 1st February 1881. This may contradict the Clergy of the Church of England database and Alumni Cantabrigienses. St John the Evangelist, Son of John Jennings of Llnest-Hen, Cardiganshire, was born in Westminster: Parochial 1798. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin, he graduated B.A. in 1820, Memorials. J.E.Smith 1892. and proceeded to the degree of M.A. in the year 1832. After having

Pages 88 to 98 held the curacy of West Meon, Hampshire, for some years, Mr. Jennings came to St. John's as curate under Canon Edwards, upon whose resignation he was instituted to the rectory on the 29th February, 1832. He was gazetted canon residentiary of Westminster, on 9th January, 1837; became Rural Dean of St. Margaret and St. John, and Archdeacon of Westminster, in 1868, and was for some years Sub-Dean. Canon Jennings was chaplain to the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers, and was chaplain to the Lord Mayor (Alderman Johnson) in 1845. Archdeacon Jennings, who was twice married, died at his house, 18, Dean's-yard, on 26th March, 1883, aged eighty-four, and was buried at Lyne, near Chertsey, in Surrey. … Much of the success which attended Mr. Jennings' early ministry at St. John's was due to his unaffected sympathy with the young men of the parish – a characteristic which had made him deservedly popular in his Hampshire curacy. Here, on one occasion, a disagreement had arisen between the Rector and "the lads of the village," in consequence of their having preferred the physical exercises of the cricket field to the devotional exercises of the Church on the Sunday

Page 11 of 40 1 January 2017 Notes on the Davies family

Surname Forenames Dob Dod Source Notes afternoons. The rector had forbidden the use of the cricket-field, and had enjoined the sportive members of his flock to repair to the Church, and their disobedience had incurred the rectorial displeasure. So completely had the young curate won the confidence of the lads, that they sought his counsel in the situation. Their plea of hard work, and ' long hours,' and the harmlessness of the recreation, in itself so far availed with the young curate, as to result in a compromise by which both parties were brought to agreement. The young fellows were afterwards to be seen on their way to church with their cricketing accessories, which they deposited in the churchyard while they attended the afternoon service, to be 'pitched' in the meadow for the remainder of the day upon the dismissal of the congregation. Mr. Jennings applied himself to the duties of his curacy with great zeal until the resignation of his rector, and not less so after he had succeeded to the rectory. In 1837, a prebendal stall in the Abbey was bestowed upon him by Lord Melbourne, then Prime Minister. The honour was conferred upon him without solicitation or previous consultation. His first knowledge of the fact was derived from the columns of the daily newspaper, so that 'he awoke one morning and found himself famous.' In 1840 (see p. 72), a canonry became annexed to the rectory by law. It fell to Canon Jennings' lot to assist in the magnificent service at the Abbey on the coronation of Her present Majesty, when the Queen's contribution to the offertory took the form of a large nugget of gold. This treasure the Canon purchased at its full value, and had it beaten into a handsome cup, which he highly prized. He was the last surviving clergyman who assisted at the ceremony. … The Rev. Arthur Warner, M.A., rector of St. Mary-le-Bow, Cheapside … sums up "the marvellous work accomplished by Archdeacon Jennings during his incumbency of half a century. He found one church, one rector, seldom resident, one curate, and one small Sunday school in a hired room. He left six churches, each with National and Sunday schools, seventeen clergy; while the population had about doubled. It is, I believe, the best record for one life's work, in its own line, that we have."

9 Information about John Jennings 9.1 Tracks of a Rolling Stone by Henry J. Coke

The following extract is taken from the Preface to Second Edition. of the book, copied from www.worldwideschool.org/library/books/hst/biography/TracksofaRollingStone/chap0.htm. Henry Coke was born in about 1826.

“The First Edition of this book was written, from beginning to end, in the short space of five months, without the aid of diary or notes, beyond those cited as such from a former work.

“The Author, having no expectation that his reminiscences would be received with the kind indulgence of which this Second Edition is the proof, with diffidence ventured to tell so many tales connected with his own unimportant life as he has done. Emboldened by the reception his 'Tracks' have met with, he now adds a few stories which he trusts may further amuse its readers.

“June 1905.”

The following extract is taken from Chapter 38 of the book, copied from www.worldwideschool.org/library/books/hst/biography/TracksofaRollingStone/chap38.html. The text has been much abridged to only include information that gives a clue as to when Henry Coke may have been in contact with John Jennings.

“The winter of 1854-55 I spent in Rome.

“On my return to England I took up my abode in Dean’s Yard, and shared a house there with Mr. Cayley, the Yorkshire member, and his two sons, the eldest a barrister, and my friend George. Here for several years we had exceedingly pleasant gatherings of men more or less distinguished in literature and art.

Page 34 of 40 1 January 2017 Notes on the Davies family

Tennyson was a frequent visitor - coming late, after dinner hours, to smoke his pipe. He varied a good deal, sometimes not saying a word, but quietly listening to our chatter. Thackeray also used to drop in occasionally.

“George Cayley and I, with the assistance of his father and others, had started a weekly paper called ‘The Realm.’

“George Cayley and I now entered at Lincoln’s Inn. At the end of three years he was duly called to the Bar. I was not; for alas, as usual, something ‘turned up,’ which drew me in another direction. For a couple of years, however, I ‘ate’ my terms - not unfrequently with William Harcourt, with whom Cayley had a Yorkshire intimacy even before our Cambridge days.

“Old Mr. Cayley, though not the least strait-laced, was a religious man.

“Amongst other minor tasks, he used to teach at the Sunday-school of St. John’s, Westminster; in this he persuaded me to join him. The only other volunteer, not a clergyman, was Page Wood - a great friend of Mr. Cayley’s - afterwards Lord Chancellor Hatherley. In spite of Mr. Cayley’s Unitarianism, like Frederick the Great, he was all for letting people ‘go to Heaven in their own way,’ and was moreover quite ready to help them in their own way. So that he had no difficulty in hearing the boys repeat the day’s collect, or the Creed, even if Athanasian, in accordance with the prescribed routine of the clerical teachers.

“This was right, at all events for him, if he thought it right. My spirit of nonconformity did not permit me to follow his example. Instead thereof, my teaching was purely secular. I used to take a volume of Mrs. Marcet’s ‘Conversations’ in my pocket; and with the aid of the diagrams, explain the application of the mechanical forces, - the inclined plane, the screw, the pulley, the wedge, and the lever. After two or three Sundays my class was largely increased, for the children keenly enjoyed their competitive examinations. I would also give them bits of poetry to get by heart for the following Sunday - lines from Gray’s ‘Elegy,’ from Wordsworth, from Pope’s ‘Essay on Man’ - such in short as had a moral rather than a religious tendency.

“After some weeks of this, the boys becoming clamorous in their zeal to correct one another, one of the curates left his class to hear what was going on in mine. We happened at the moment to be dealing with geography. The curate, evidently shocked, went away and brought another curate. Then the two together departed, and brought back the rector - Dr. Jennings, one of the Westminster Canons - a most kind and excellent man. I went on as if unconscious of the censorship, the boys exerting themselves all the more eagerly for the sake of the ‘gallery.’ When the hour was up, Canon Jennings took me aside, and in the most polite manner thanked me for my ‘valuable assistance,’ but did not think that the ‘Essay on Man,’ or especially geography, was suited for the teaching in a Sunday-school. I told him I knew it was useless to contend with so high a canonical authority; personally I did not see the impiety of geography, but then, as he already knew, I was a confirmed latitudinarian. He clearly did not see the joke, but intimated that my services would henceforth be dispensed with.”

9.2 Theological Colleges attended by Welsh ministers and priests

Web site www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/TheoColl.html contains notes about various theological colleges and schools and who attended them, including:

“Ystrad Meurig

“The Grammar School here was founded by Edward Richard esq. a native of Ystrad Meurig, by deed dated 1 October 1757, & the foundation was subsequently enlarged & augmented by the founder by further indentures executed in 1771 & 1774, by which provision was eventually made for the education of 32 poor boys of this parish or of the county of Cardigan: Mr. Richard also in 1759 also founded a library for the use of the school, to which considerable additions have been made from time to time & especially by the Rev. John Howell, M.A., sometime vicar of Llanarth, & it comprises several valuable editions of the Fathers. The founder, who died in 1777, was buried within the church, on the north side. The Grammar school of , of which he was the first master, was annexed by Dorothea Oliver (the founder) to that of Ystrad Meurig, & the united foundations are now carried on as one school. The school here was at first

Page 35 of 40 1 January 2017 Notes on the Davies family

& for some time held in the church, but afterwards a schoolroom & attached library were built on the north side of the churchyard: this is a plain rectangular structure, with pointed windows & whitewashed walls; it has a raised platform at one end, & a gallery at the other, & the desks & trestle forms arranged longitudinally down it. One or two exhibitions of £15 a year, tenable by natives of Cardiganshire, are vacant annually. This school, though remotely situated & primitive in its character, has always been remarkable for the thoroughness of the teaching given in it, & many prominent clergy have been ordained from the school without any intermediate instruction: amongst its alumni may be mentioned the Ven. John Jennings, sometime Canon residentiary of Westminster Abbey, & Archdeacon of Westminster, 1868-83; the Ven. Owens Evans M.A. of Jesus College, Oxford, archdeacon of & V Stanley Jones esq. of King's College, Cambridge. There were in 1910 60 boys; the value of the united endowments is about £300 a year, & the school is managed by a body of 14 trustees, consisting of clergy & gentry, the Bishop of St David's being chairman. Head master the Rev. John Jones M.A.; the Rev.William Francis B.A. of St Catharine's College, Cambridge, assistant master.[ Kelly's Directory of South Wales, 1910]”

Ystrad Meurig is 10 miles due east of Llanrhystud on OS sheet 135 GR 703 676.

From the 1950s, the school gradually declined. By this time it had taken on the name of St. John's College, although the exact date of, and reasons for this are unknown. Its main role became the provision of O-level and A-level courses for potential students of theology at . The last headmaster resigned in 1973. The school library has since been moved to St. David's College, Lampeter, and the school itself is now used as a village hall.
