  • Letter from State-Level Elected Leaders in All 50 States Supporting Betsy Devos for Secretary of Education
LETTER FROM STATE-LEVEL ELECTED LEADERS IN ALL 50 STATES SUPPORTING BETSY DEVOS FOR SECRETARY OF EDUCATION January 17, 2017 The Honorable Lamar Alexander Chairman U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions 428 Dirksen Senate Office Building Washington, D.C. 20510 Dear Chairman Alexander, As one of the most critical issues impacting the future of our nation, we must have a Secretary of Education committed to the needs of all of our nation’s children. Betsy DeVos has made it her life’s mission to find, support and push for education solutions in her home state of Michigan and across the country. She is an advocate and ally for all children, and we write to you today to express our support for her nomination to this important position as her confirmation hearing approaches. We represent elected state offices from all 50 states, and as such, we each know the impact of an overgrown federal government reaching into the states to push a one-size-fits all approach to education. No two states, localities or school districts are the same, nor are the needs of the children who reside there. Betsy DeVos understands this distinction and for years has embraced a variety of education solutions to meet this need. Her support for an all-of-the-above approach to K-12 education – from charter schools, to public, private and online education – defines the school choice movement that has helped countless children across many of our states. By advancing these innovative solutions from the Department of Education, Betsy DeVos will put children first and empower not only states to lead the way in making critical education decisions, but also empower parents to choose what type of education is best for their children.

EXPENSES AND APPROPRIATIONS OF THE MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE 2005 REGULAR SESSION JUNE 2005 OFFICE OF THE STATE AUDITOR PHIL BRYANT Auditor June 3, 2005 Governor Haley Barbour Lt. Governor Amy Tuck Speaker of the House Billy McCoy Members of the Legislature The New Capitol Building Jackson, Mississippi As you are aware, Section 113 of the Mississippi Constitution states, “The auditor shall, within sixty days after the adjournment of the legislature, prepare and publish a full statement of all money expended at such session, specifying the items and amount of each item, and to whom, and for what paid; and he shall also publish the amounts of all appropriations.” It is important to remember the following compliance report is prepared by the Department of Finance and Administration in accordance with Section 7-7-45, Mississippi Code, Annotated (1972). Any specific questions regarding the report would best be directed to the Department of Finance and Administration. During the 2005 Regular Session of the Mississippi Legislature, appropriations for Fiscal Year 2006 were only $10,800 from the General Fund. There were no appropriations made from special funds or funds managed outside the State Treasury. During the 2005 Regular Session, the Legislature re- appropriated $18,818,023 of Fiscal Year 2005 appropriations for Fiscal Year 2006. As a result of the Legislature making only one appropria tion during the 2005 Regular Session, the Governor called a special session of the Legislature in May 2005 to address Fiscal Year 2006 appropriations. Appropriations made during this special session were not available at the date of this report.

  • September 4 Special Session Updates
9/4/2020 Missouri Special Session Update SHARE: Join Our Email List Lathrop GPM Consulting LLC 314 East High Street Jefferson City, MO 65101 +1 573.893.4336 Visit our website Controversy Drives Senate to use Uncommon Procedural Motion to End Debate The Missouri Senate convened Wednesday morning, Sept. 2, taking up five bills passed last week by the House of Representatives during the Special Session on Violent Crime called by Governor Mike Parson (R). Controversy arose, however, on House Bill 2 (establishing provisions relating to the admissibility of certain witness statements) when an amendment to the bill was introduced by Sen. Bob Onder (R-Lake St. Louis) that would allow the Missouri Attorney General to intervene after 90 days in St. Louis City on murder cases if the local prosecutor chooses not to prosecute. A simple day in the Senate turned into hours of heated debate that didn’t end until 3:00 o’clock Thursday morning, as Senate Republicans used the PQ (the seldom-used call for the Previous Question) to end debate and pave the way for passage of HB 2 including Sen. Onder’s amendment language. Much of the floor debate pitted Sen. Onder versus Sen. Jamilah Nasheed (D-St. Louis) and Sen. Sen. Karla May (D-St. Louis), with Onder saying Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner was not effectively prosecuting murderers in St. Louis City, and Nasheed and May pushing back in support of Gardner. It is unknown how the House will react to the Senate’s amendment to HB 2. The House did not address the issue in late August during its floor action on the Governor’s call.

Journal of the Senate FIRST REGULAR SESSION FIFTY-FIRST DAY—TUESDAY, APRIL 14, 2015 The Senate met pursuant to adjournment. President Kinder in the Chair. Reverend Carl Gauck offered the following prayer: “Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths.” (Psalm 25:4) Eternal God, in a world that seems to treat all things as transitory, used today and gone tomorrow, how wonderful it is to focus on the rich legacy we have in You. Everything You do and create for Your purposes lasts forever. How reassuring it is to accept that even we are meant to have life beyond this life and, therefore, must treat each other as Your fellow creation. In Your Holy Name we pray. Amen. The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag was recited. A quorum being established, the Senate proceeded with its business. The Journal of the previous day was read and approved. Photographers from KRCG-TV were given permission to take pictures in the Senate Chamber. VERIZON POLITICAL CONTRIBUTIONS JANUARY – DECEMBER 2012 1 Verizon Political Contributions January – December 2012 A Message from Craig Silliman Verizon is affected by a wide variety of government policies ‐‐ from telecommunications regulation to taxation to health care and more ‐‐ that have an enormous impact on the business climate in which we operate. We owe it to our shareowners, employees and customers to advocate public policies that will enable us to compete fairly and freely in the marketplace. Political contributions are one way we support the democratic electoral process and participate in the policy dialogue. Our employees have established political action committees at the federal level and in 20 states. These political action committees (PACs) allow employees to pool their resources to support candidates for office who generally support the public policies our employees advocate. This report lists all PAC contributions, corporate political contributions, support for ballot initiatives and independent expenditures made by Verizon in 2012. The contribution process is overseen by the Corporate Governance and Policy Committee of our Board of Directors, which receives a comprehensive report and briefing on these activities at least annually. We intend to update this voluntary disclosure twice a year and publish it on our corporate website. We believe this transparency with respect to our political spending is in keeping with our commitment to good corporate governance and a further sign of our responsiveness to the interests of our shareowners. Craig L. Silliman Senior Vice President, Public Policy 2 Verizon Political Contributions January – December 2012 Political Contributions Policy: Our Voice in the Political Process What are the Verizon Good Government Clubs? and the government agencies administering the federal and individual state election laws.
