Problems starting cold, poor performance. Idle hunting intermittently. Problem Summary Cranks and fires up when cold but stalls a few times Fuel damper unless accelerator is used. Also has poor acceleration and idle becomes erratic when the vehicle reaches operating temperature.

When the vehicle is switched off hot, it will not restart always. Diagnostic Sequence

There were no fault codes on scan tools and the spark was OK.

Hooked up fuel pressure gauge and found the pressure to be extremely low and very slow to rise.

Acquired some technical information. The fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator are inside the fuel tank and so is the fuel filter assembly.

The device on the fuel rail is a fuel damper and not a pressure control regulator.

Fault Description

The fuel pressure would only get to 2.5’bar at most and when switched off it would drop to less than 1.5’bar. When the engine was hot the pressure would not even get to 2’bar. Fault Solution Fuel pressure The fuel pump assembly is accessed by moving the rear regulator seat top section and removing the access panel. Fuel pump location Remove the complete fuel pump assembly and after inspecting it order a complete assembly as best option. Filter body Main housing New assembly comes complete minus the fuel sender that we had to swap over by sliding the old one onto the side of assembly.

Vehicle started and now the fuel pressure is around 4’bar while running, and at rest it remains at 2.4’bar. Recommended Time

Labour time was 4 hours, taking into account research time, location of parts and actual time spent fixing the problem.

At the time of this report the assembly was around tips for ideas division $260. Due to the way it is put together and considering the cost we would not recommend changing just one part or even just the filter if available. Re-securing the hoses and refitting the pressure regulator looks like a real mission to push back in place and seal.
