Krzysztof Zanussi – Lifetime Achievement Award at TIFF Special Screenings Krzysztof Zanussi – Lifetime Achievement Award at TIFF Special screenings Renowned Polish director, screenwriter and producer Krzysztof Zanussi will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 13th edition of the Transilvania International Film Festival (May 30-June 8). The filmmaker will be celebrated during the closing gala and via a special screening of his feature film debut, which launched him full throttle in the world of cinema in 1969 – The Structure of Crystal. On Sunday, June 8, Zanussi will hold a master class for film enthusiasts. Born on June 17, 1939, in Warsaw, Krzysztof Zanussi studied physics, philosophy and cinema at the famous Łódź school. His graduation short film, The Death of a Provincial (1966) won the Golden Lion in Venice. He directed over 40 feature films and documentaries for cinema and television, most of them multi-awarded in various festivals. The aforementioned feature film debut in earned him awards in Mar del Plata and Valladolid as well as the full appreciation of international film critics. Then came films such as The Illumination (1973) – Golden Leopard and the FIPRESCI Award in Locarno, A Woman’s Decision (1975) – The OCIC Award at the Berline, Spirala (1978) – the Ecumenical Jury Prize in Cannes, The Constant Factor (1980) – The Best Director Award and the Ecumenical Jury Prize in Cannes, Imperative (1982) – The Pasinetti Award and the Grand Jury Prize in Venice, A Year of the Quiet Sun (1984) – the Golden Lion in Venice and a Golden Globe nominee, or Persona non grata (2005), selected in the official Venice competition. Krzysztof Zanussi is teaching at the Silesian University in Katowice and at the European Graduate School in Switzerland and he's the manager of the TOR Studios in Poland. He was awarded many international awards; he is the president of the European Federation of Audiovisual Performers and a consultant to the Vatican's Pontifical Commission for Culture. In 2001, he received the Doctor Honoris Causa award of the Bucharest University of Drama and Film. Zanussi is also directing theater and opera shows in Milan, Palermo, Bonn, Krakow and Rome. His life and work was the subject of the documentary Anxiety / Niepokój (2004), by Krzysztof Tchórzewski. A special TIFF event will be the Romanian premiere of the impressive Cathedrals of Culture 3D, a 3D documentary about iconic buildings from all over the world, directed, among others, by the late Michael Glawogger, deceased on April 23. The other five authors are Wim Wenders, Robert Redford, Michael Madsen, Margreth Olin and Karim Ainouz. Cathedrals of Culture 3D premiered internationally in Berlin and the Cluj screening will be attended by the producer Erwin M. Schmidt and the acclaimed Brazilian director Karim Ainouz (Madame Sata, The Silver Cliff). TIFF viewers will be reintroduced to some of the most beloved big screen heroes of the communist era. "Trilogia Ardelenilor" – now with brand new 35mm copies, presented last fall at Making Waves: New Romanian Cinema in New York, will be screened in Cluj as a unique marathon. The Prophet, the Gold and the Transylvanians (Dan Pita, 1979), The Artist, the Dollars and the Transylvanians (Mircea Veroiu, 1981) and The Baby, the Oil and the Transylvanians (Dan Pita, 1982) have been seen, prior to 1989, by over 17 million Romanians. Movie lovers will watch, alongside football fans, the classic Fever Pitch (David Evans, 1997), a Nick Hornby adaptation, with Colin Firth in the role of a football fan whose life is inextricably linked to that of his favorite team, Arsenal. The film will be screened as a special gala in honor of the British producer Nik Powell, the Director of the National Film and Television School in the UK, who will be attending TIFF as a member of the jury. Another special gala screening, this time in honor of TIFF guest and jury member Michael Kutza, the director of the Chicago International Film Festival, is provided by Strictly Ballroom (Baz Luhrmann, 1992), winner of the Silver Hugo trophy for Best Film Debut in Chicago. The special gala will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the prestigious American festival founded by Michael Kutza. It's an election year in Romania - thus, Viva la Liberta! (Roberto Ando) will be followed by debates about politics in today's Romania, attended by politicians, analysts and journalists. Contemplative and absurd, this comedy starring Tony Servillo in a double role – the leader of an opposition party who disappears without a trace and his twin brother, taken out of a mental hospital in order to replace him – is a satire of Italia's contemporary politics, which can be perfectly superimposed over Romania's. Viva la liberta! received the David di Donatello "Best Script" and "Best Actor" Awards and ran in the Karlovy Vary competition. However, what counts more than awards is the fact that Polish viewers have regained pleasure in watching Polish films.

Graduated from directing department of Lodz film school in 1967. Taking an active part in the amateur film movement he made 11 motion pictures, 9 of which gained various awards. Since 1980 artistic director and then president of Tor Film Production. From 1971 to 1983 he was vice-chairman of the Polish Filmmakers Association. Has lectured at numerous universities, including Lodz film school, National Film School in England, Columbia University in New York, Yale University, Cambridge University, University of California (Berkeley), Rice University (Houston). For over 20 has master classes for the students of Moscow Higher Courses of Script Writers and Directors, for over 30 years teaches at the University of Silesia. Mr. Zanussi is also a theater director staging drama and opera performances in Milan, Palermo, Bonn, Cracow, Bremen, Basel, Syracuse, Kiev, Novosibirsk and Rome – to mention some major ones. During the collection of my secondary data, which concentrated mainly on English-language books but also includes newspapers and Internet resources, I encountered many interesting issues. These are divided here into three categories discussed in three chapters: ‘Stereotypes and Errors’ that result from the lack of knowledge thus causing misunderstandings, ‘Deficiencies’ about the absence of some films and directors in the English-speaking world and ‘Different Perspectives’ that reveal some interesting comparisons. The judgements applied to define these sections are respectively: accuracy (correctness of the facts), novelty (unknown trends) and originality of ideas (absent in Polish film criticism). During my research I have discovered the main factors distorting the perception of Polish cinema. I talked about them during my presentation entitled ‘English-Language Critical Engagements with Polish Cinema’ during the ‘Polish Cinema in an International Context’ conference held in Manchester in December 2009. Most of these issues are addressed in Chapter One, which outlines the problems that English-language authors seem to have with the Polish language, the background political issues and the lack of knowledge about some of the periods of Polish cinema.

  • Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema Throughout North America
    INTRODUCTION In December 2011, filmmaker Martin Scorsese traveled to Poland to accept an honorary doctor- al degree from The Polish National Film, Television, and Theatre School in Łódź. There, Mr. Scors- ese met with Jędrzej Sabliński (a digital restoration expert, now with DI Factory), and reviewed a list of new digital restorations of Polish films. In the months following this visit, with the help of The Film Foundation, the two men came up with the idea of a North American tour of a series of restored Polish cinema classics. From an extensive catalogue of digitally restored films, Mr. Scorsese chose twenty-one masterpieces. The Film Foundation executive director, Margaret Bodde then worked with Mr. Sabliński to develop the program and recommended Milestone Films as the North American distributor for the series. Milestone will be touring the 21-film retrospective Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema throughout North America. Premiering in New York City at the Film Society of Lincoln Center on February 5th, 2014, the series features films from some of Poland’s most accom- plished and lauded filmmakers, spanning the period from 1957–1987. Curated by Mr. Scorsese, each film has been digitally re-mastered and brilliantly restored on newly subtitled DCPs.
