David Binney DAVID BINNEY SOUTH David Binney mit Chris Potter, Uri Caine, Adam Rodgers, Scott Colley, Brian Blade ACT 9279-2 Es gibt nicht wenige Kritiker, die dem Jazz der Gegenwart ein eher mäßiges Zeugnis ausstellen: er halte sich nur noch mit längst ausgereizten Ideen über Wasser, ihm fehle der Abenteuergeist und die Kraft, um noch einmal eine Revolution anzuzetteln, wie er es im Laufe seiner Geschichte einst mehrfach getan hat. Gut, dass es immer wieder Musiker gibt, die die Jazz-Pessimisten verstummen lassen und uns daran erinnern, dass dieser schwer fassbare Stil durchaus den Anspruch erheben kann, die aufregendste Musik des 20. Jahrhunderts gewesen zu sein und darüber hinaus das Zeug dazu hat, auch das neue Millennium musikalisch ganz wesentlich zu beeinflussen. Zu diesen Musikern gehört der Saxofonist und Komponist David Binney aus New York, ein unerschrockener Geist, der, beeinflusst vom Jazz aller Epochen, aber auch von Rock und Funk bis hin zur modernen Klassik, Musik von ganz eigenwilliger, bislang ungehörter Schönheit schreibt und spielt. David Binney wurde im Sonnenstaat Florida geboren, wuchs in Kalifornien auf und machte in New York Karriere. Sein Name mag noch nicht jedem Jazzfan ein Begriff sein, doch unter Musikern genießt der 39jährige bereits einen fabelhaften Ruf, was schon seine imposante Biographie belegt. In der haben sich Auftritte und Tourneen mit dem Gil Evans Orchestra, Maria Schneider, Cecil McBee oder Bobby Previte und CD-Einspielungen mit Uri Caine, Leni Stern, Drew Gress, Boomish, Lonnie Plaxico, The Jazzhole, Medeski, Martin & Wood oder Ed Simon verewigt. In seinem Lebenslauf findet sich auch die Mitgliedschaft in solchen Gruppen wie Lost Tribe, Lan Xang und Global Theory und ein eigenes kleines Label, Mythology Records. David Binney, der zwar auch Tenor- und Sopran-, aber hauptsächlich Altsaxophon spielt, hat im Laufe der Jahre einen Sound entwickelt, den man, einmal gehört, nicht mehr vergisst. Seine Saxofonstimme kann es mit dem Emotionsspektrum der menschlichen Stimme aufnehmen, kann ganz weich im Ansatz sein, dann markant, fordernd, schließlich bohrend, schreiend, flehend. Alle diese Gefühlsfacetten finden sich auch auf seinem ACT-Debüt-Album „“ Zu den Aufnahmen lud David Binney Musiker ein, die zu seinem engsten Umfeld gehören. Ein illustres Sextett hat er da zusammengestellt, eine Band der Bandleader: Chris Potter muss zu den wichtigsten Tenorsaxofonisten seiner Generation gezählt werden. Das Multi- Talent, das auch ausgezeichnet Sopran- und Altsaxofon, Bass-Klarinette und Piano beherrscht, ist zuletzt im Quintett von Dave Holland, aber auch an der Seite von Paul Motian, Steve Swallow, John Patitucci oder Antonio Farao sowie in der Mingus Big Band aufgefallen. Auf dem jüngsten Album der legendären Gruppe Steely Dan spielt er sämtliche Saxofon-Soli. Den Gitarristen Adam Rogers konnte man bereits in den Bands von Randy Brecker, Jacky Terrasson, Alexander Sipiagin und Bill Evans bewundern. Mit im hat David Binney auch in der Formation Lost Tribe zusammen gewirkt. Der Pianist Uri Caine gehört zu den vielseitigsten Pianisten der New Yorker Jazz-Szene und sorgte in der jüngeren Vergangenheit mit Bearbeitungen klassischer Werke für Furore: seine Gustav Mahler- und Richard Wagner- Adaptionen fanden sich genauso in den Schlagzeilen der Fachpresse wieder wie zuletzt seine Interpretation von Bachs Goldberg-Variationen. Bassist Scott Colley veredelte bislang Alben von Andrew Hill, Jim Hall, Carmen McRae, Fred Hersch oder Renee Rosness mit perfekter Intonation und ebensolchem Timing und leitet daneben eigene Gruppen. Der Schlagzeuger Brian Blade hat mit seinem feinnervigen Spiel schon Ikonen wie Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Seal, Daniel Lanois und Joshua Redman unterstützt und führt zudem mit der Gruppe „“ eine der eindrucksvollsten Formationen der jüngeren Jazzgeschichte an. Schlagzeuger Jim Black, der bei zwei Stücken aushilft, gilt als einer der innovativsten Schlagzeuger der Gegenwart. Mit seinen Freunden zelebriert David Binney auf „“eine Musik, die trotz solistischer Glanzleistungen eher am Ensemble orientiert ist. Mit seinem Sextett lebt der Saxofonist und Komponist seinen ausgeprägten Sinn für Dramaturgie und Dynamik aus. David Binney überrascht uns zudem in jedem seiner Stücke mit der Kunst einer Melodieführung, DAVID BINNEY die unbekannte Pfade einschlägt und doch sofort Vertrauen beim Zuhörer erweckt. King, Associate Professor, Musicology, School of Music The French treat jazz as “high art,” as their state radio stations France Musique and France Culture demonstrate. Jazz came to France in World War I with the US army, and became fashionable in the 1920s—treated as exotic African- American folklore. However, when France developed its own jazz players, notably Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, jazz became accepted as a universal art. Two well-born Frenchmen, Hugues Panassié and Charles Delaunay, embraced jazz and propagated it through the Hot Club de France. After World War II, several highly educated commentators insured that jazz was taken seriously. French radio jazz gradually acquired the support of the French government. This thesis describes the major jazz programs of France Musique and France Culture, particularly the daily programs of Alain Gerber and Arnaud Merlin, and demonstrates how these programs display connoisseurship, erudition, thoroughness, critical insight, and dedication. France takes its “stewardship” of jazz seriously.     ANNE DUCROS BIOGRAPHY Native of the Pas de Calais, France, Anne Ducros began her classic training (musical and vocal) within the conservatoire of Boulogne Sur mer with Lyne Durian. Then at the same time she is studying law at the University of Lille, she completes and refines her vocal mastery thanks to the education of Yuri Anoff and Maddy Mespley. Afterward she has a practice of baroque music within training course at the University and investigates Couperin, Rameau or Bach’s music. Introduced to the vocal jazz from 1986. She sets up her first quartet of jazz with which she gains various international competitions (Price for better soloist and first vocaliste in the festival of jazz of Dunkerque; First price of soloist and vocalist in the festival of jazz of Vienne in 1989). This growing recognition will stimulates her of an inexhaustible will to sing always more by accumulating concerts in France and specially by publishing her first album of vocal jazz, "DON'T YOU TAKE A CHANCE" at JTB in 1989. After this first recording was realized, she returns on the road by multiplying the tours, the festivals (Nice, Montreaux, Nantes, Barcelone, Ismir, Montréal.) and the musical meetings (Michel Petrucciani, Didier Lockwood, Michel Legrand, Ray Brown, Ted Curson, Jacky Terrasson, Eric Lelann, Stefano Di Batista...). This artistic fulfilment couples with an increasing educational investment. During years 1992-1993, she teaches the vocal jazz at the ARPEJ in Paris and since 1994 she is the manager of Prelude, first school of vocal jazz in Paris. (Steve Mundinger) Sunday night at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., many of the most notable figures in jazz looked toward the future and celebrated the storied past. Convening in the immaculate Eisenhower Theater, the Thelonious Monk Institute Of Jazz awarded Ben Williams first prize in the 2009 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Bass Competition. Each year, the competition highlights a different instrument, and this year's weekend-long event saw 15 bassists perform at the semi-finals, held at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History on Saturday. Before a panel of distinguished judges -- including Ron Carter, Charlie Haden, Dave Holland, Robert Hurst, Christian McBride and John Patitucci -- the top three musicians then played in Sunday night's finals. Page Two On his two tunes -- "Tricotism" by Oscar Pettiford, and the Juan Tizol classic "Caravan" - - Williams wowed the audience with his nimble fingering, melodic soloing and creative rhythmic approach. Ultimately, his musical prowess earned him the top spot. By winning first place in the competition, Williams will receive $20,000 toward college- level music scholarships, and a recording contract with Concord Records. Williams is a native Washingtonian who attended D.C.'s Duke Ellington School of the Arts, and later matriculated to Michigan State and Juilliard, where he is finishing his degree. He has since become an in-demand bassist in New York, playing in the bands of Stefon Harris and Marcus Strickland, and on an upcoming Jacky Terrasson record.

Dave Brubeck called him a “great pianist” and JazzTimes “a formidable improviser who lives in the moment.” He is a graduate of the Bela Bartok Conservatory, the ELTE Science University (in his native Hungary) and Berklee College of Music. In 1987, Gardony won first prize at the Great American Jazz Piano Competition. A long-time professor of Piano at Berklee, he leads his trio of ten years: bassist John Lockwood and drummer Yoron Israel, as well as his quartet and sextet. Gardony’s most recent album “Clarity” is a critically acclaimed solo piano recording released on Sunnyside Records in 2013. JOHN LOCKWOOD is known as the first-call bassist in New England. He has played with Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, The Fringe and Gary Burton among many others. His recording credits span over 100 albums. Currently he is Professor at Berklee College of Music, New England Conservatory and at Longy School of Music. He is originally from Cape Town, South Africa.
