  • CHEVROLETTER June 2020
CHEVROLETTER June 2020 Vol 2020 Issue 6.0 Director’s Report June 2020 I hope the beginning of June finds all our members in good health and managing the sheltering in place restrictions. New Covid-19 rates on Long Island are down over 90% compared to our worst times so we must be making a difference. I do not know how the lower infection rates and Cuomo’s planned phases will affect the remainder of the 2020 car show season. The AACA has cancelled their major event at Hershey in October. this is the first time since Hershey will not be having a swap meet and car corral. I am told there is still a possibility of having the vehicle judging on Saturday. Carlisle rescheduled their spring event and are hoping to hold more swap meets as soon as conditions allow. People are getting very innovative to enjoy their cars in a safe a responsible way. I have seen groups of cars at Sunken Meadow Park with a circle of guys socially distanced and chatting. My Wednesday Bagel Chalet group now meets in the parking lot with their cars. I have been in a few rolling car shows thru local neighborhoods to give the residents a bit of a lift. Our club member, Peter Sarros planned a commemorative run thru Huntington Hospital to thank all the front line workers. What started as a small event quickly grew into a multi club event and food drive for the Huntington Cares foundation. There were over 80 cars in attendance, a motorcycle color guard and a police presence to control traffic.

  • Shlall RACING CARS.* by HN CHARLES, B.Sc.7
500 THE INSTITUTION OF AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERS. ShlALL RACING CARS.* By H. N. CHARLES, B.Sc.7 (ASSOCIATEMEMBER.) February, 1935. INTRODUCTION. It is undeniable that everybody with a normal sense of values enjoys a clean sporting contest of any kind between adversaries who are fairly and evenly matched. To make the contest a real test of merit it must take place in public, and must be in accordance with the accepted rules. The above requirements are met by motor racing, since thousands of people witness the great long-distance motor races of the present day. The rules usually are also comparatively strict, and fine sportsmanship frequently exists in addition, in connexion with honouring the unwritten rules of the motor racing game. It has been the author’s good fortune during the last few years to be entrusted with the dcsigning of a number of types of what, for the want of a better term, may be briefly described as “ small racing cars.” The work, as it happens, has been entirely carried out for one Company, whose drawing office and experimental depart- ment are combined under his care. Having previously been in daily contact at different times with motor-cycle engines, airship engines, both rotary and stationary aeroplane engines, and a variety of accessories connected with the various types, it was at first some- what difficult to go back to the beginning and start with small engines all over again, but there is a great fascination about these small units, because they provide an almost ideal ground for experiment, the cost of which is greatly reduced by the small size of the parts involved.

Found on Ancestry.com (Author Unknown) On the morning of Thursday, January 14, 1926 fire broke out in the company’s sanding machine and spread spontaneously through the blowers to different parts of the room. In the few hours that followed, Onaway’s main means of livelihood went up in smoke and although the city still exists, it has never reached the proportion it was on that historical day. With the presence of the American Wood Rim Co. and its sister company, the Lobdell Emerey Manufacturing Co., Onaway experienced tremendous growth in its early year. The big industry, along with the profitable timber business made Onaway the biggest little town in northern Michigan. According to one report, Onaway had two newspapers, three lawyers, four doctors, three large hotels, 17 saloons, nine churches, two bakeries, a fairgrounds, racetrack and an opera house in the pre-fire days. The figure varies, but Onaway’s population was approximately 4,000 and the two huge industries employed anywhere from 1200 to 1500 persons. The Lobdell Emery Manufacturing co. was involved in lumbering, sawmill operations and the making of such products as dowels, broom handles, and coat hanger stock. The American Wood Rim Co., was the world’s largest and finest producer of automobile steering wheels and bicycle rims. For a number of years the company made all the steering wheels with either malleable iron or aluminum spiders. The alumi- num spiders were all molded and finished in the plant while the malleable iron castings were purchased from outside sour- ces. During its last few years in Onaway, the American Wood Rim Co.
