New Film “RISS.” Steps Inside the Life of World Surf League Champion Carissa Moore New Film “RISS.” Steps Inside the Life of World Surf League Champion Carissa Moore Latest film by acclaimed director Peter Hamblin and Red Bull Media House releases on Red Bull TV May 11th “RISS. A Film about More Love with Carissa Kainani Moore,” from Red Bull Media House and Hamblin Imagery, brings fans an in-depth look at Hawaii’s legendary surfer, Carissa Moore. Centered around the 2019 World Surf League Championship Tour season and Olympic qualification, the film follows the Honolulu native’s journey in giving back, inspiring the younger generation and ultimately striving to be defined by more than the results. As a ruthless competitor who holds herself to the highest standards, Carissa became the youngest WSL champion in professional surfing and a four-time world titleist. Following her third championship in 2015, success was met with challenging years ahead. As other women dominated the podiums, Moore struggled to find her footing which caused a reevaluation in priorities. “I’ve always been chasing results and other people’s validation. In 2019, I was finally like, ‘No, none of that matters. I’m a daughter, I’m a sister. I’m a friend, I’m a wife”, says Moore. “RISS.” ushers in a new phase of Carissa’s life while celebrating a comeback that was the culmination of years of emotional searching and hard-won personal strides. It captures the turning point and how the 2019 title race unfolded as a result. “My goal was to peel back layers and show the person behind the athlete,” says the director, Peter Hamblin. “Everyone sees this one perspective of her, and [I wanted] to show the depth of her personality and what a wonderful person she is.” "This is a real look into who I am, as a person, and I hope people are inspired to live authentically, chase their dreams and treat others with love,” says Carissa. “I hope this film is something positive that can be a nice escape for a little while from everything that’s going on." The film will be available on Red Bull TV on May 11th. Visit redbull.com/Riss for updates. ADDITIONAL QUOTES “I felt like I was in a three-year funk and just not flowing. I hit, not rock bottom, but I guess you could say that. I hit a pretty low point. For me that was a pretty defining moment where I thought ‘OK, things have to change’. That was the inspiration to make that daily commitment to start changing the way that I looked at things.” - Carissa Moore “Peter’s done a very good job of taking a genuine, real look into who I am, as a person.” - Carissa Moore "Having a script and knowing exactly what I wanted to capture made my life totally easy from a time perspective. The majority of my time with Carissa was spent without a camera getting to know her. And then when I picked up a camera, it was capturing exactly what I wanted, asking her bizarre questions, getting offbeat [footage] from her." - Peter Hamblin ABOUT CARISSA MOORE Carissa Moore has established herself as a powerhouse in women's surfing, a world champ who's not afraid to compete against the guys and pull moves no other women are doing in the water. She started collecting wins at the NSSA junior surf competitions and top spots at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, where she helped Hawaii win a team victory. In all, she clinched a record 11 NSSA amateur titles, and at age 16 in 2008, she became the youngest champion at a Triple Crown of Surfing event when she won the Reef Hawaiian Pro. In 2010, Carissa qualified for her first season on the ASP World Tour, which is now known as the World Surf League. In that debut season, she won two major contests, finished third overall and was named Rookie of the Year. Not bad for a 17-year-old newbie. The following season, Carissa was the youngster to watch on the World Tour and lived up to the reputation by winning three events and claiming her first World crown, unseating four-time defending champ Stephanie Gilmore in the process. At 18, she became the youngest person, male or female, to win a surfing world title. Never one to turn down a challenge, that year Carissa also became the first woman to compete in Oahu’s Triple Crown of Surfing, typically an all-male event featuring the world’s best surfers. Carissa went on to take World Tour championship honors again in 2013. She then finished off the top step of the podium in 2015 where it required a monumental mental adjustment, but she sees it as part of the journey. Returning to her best form impressively in 2019, Carissa surfed to victory at J-Bay, Hossegor and Maui to win a memorable fourth World Surf League title after a four-year gap. She also secured her place on the 2021 USA Olympic surf team. ABOUT PETER HAMBLIN Prolific indie writer-director, Peter Hamblin, first hit our screens in 2016 with the iconic Emmy award-winning surf film ‘Let’s Be Frank’. As a South African surfer born in Durban KZN, Pete began his career in the world of advertising, but fast recognised he preferred ‘creating’ over ‘managing’ the creative process. He experienced his first taste on a 2-week stint shooting stills for the WSL during the annual world tour in 2006, and was captivated. In 2009 Pete founded Hamblin Imagery: a boutique production company HQ’d in the UK focused on constructing unconventional narratives and testing the boundaries of film-making with as many ‘What the Fuck?’ moments as professionally admissible. The company has rapidly become recognised as a creative leader having collaborated with some of the industry’s top brands and creative agencies. Peter has spent the past year writing, directing and editing his latest surf documentary ‘RISS’; a candid, mixed-media exploration into the life of newly-Olympic surfer Carissa Moore, peeling back the layers and exploring her sense of purpose. Peter’s next film to be released across festivals this year is a fiction comedy short starring Bafta- winning actor Celyn Jones, entitled ‘In Hope Of Nothing’. It tells the tale of two brothers, negotiating the trials and tribulations of producing a Hollywood movie, and the challenges they face on that journey, and their endlessly entangled professional and personal sibling relationship. .

Professional female surfers, in particular, are drawing greater media attention than ever before and are seen by surf companies as the perfect vehicle to develop this global industry further. Because lifestyle branding has been developed as a modern marketing strategy, this thesis examines the lifestyle marketing practices of the three major surfing companies Billabong, Rip Curl and Quicksilver/Roxy through an investigation of the sponsorship experiences of fifteen sponsored female surfers. The research paradigm guiding this study is an interpretive approach that applies Doris Lessing’s (1991) concept of conformity and Michel Foucault’s (1979) notion of surveillance and the technologies of the self. An ethnographic approach was utilised to examine the main research purpose, namely to: determine the impact of lifestyle marketing by Billabong, Rip Curl and Quicksilver/Roxy on sponsored female surfers.
