Engineering Guide Specifications For Recuperator Plate Heat Exchangers Section 15700 – Mechanical HVAC – Ventilation – Energy Recovery (Section 23 72 19 Fixed Plate Air to Air Energy Recovery Equipment) General Scope Mechanical HVAC ventilation equipment shall contain a fixed plate type heat recovery system, preinstalled and tested by the manufacturer. Recuperator is the basis of design. Furnish owner’s manuals covering installation, maintenance, and operation. Manufacturer shall warrant the heat recovery system to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of 2 years from invoice date. Product Technology The heat recovery system shall be based on a high efficiency fixed plate type heat exchanger with dynamic heat transfer. Sustainability All materials used in the heat exchangers shall be natural and 100% recyclable. Use of exotic materials, chemicals, or rare earth elements is unacceptable. The heat exchangers must be constructed in a sustainable way, producing no hazardous effluent or unrecyclable waste, and designed to minimize waste in the production process. Manufacturer shall offer a recycle program. Heat Exchangers The heat exchangers’ heat transfer plates shall be constructed of high quality, aircraft-grade aluminum, automatically machine formed for quality and consistency. Optionally, the plates may be coated with Epoxy for additional corrosion resistance, or constructed of Stainless Steel for pressure resistance. The heat exchangers shall be capable of operating with temperatures of -22°F to 390°F (-30°C to 200°C) and differential pressures up to 6” w.g. (1500 Pa) using standard silicone sealant. Optionally, sealants shall be available, including sealant containing No Silicone, and high temperature sealants capable of operating up to 1500°F (850°C). Optionally, the heat exchanger’s heat transfer plates may be constructed of 316 stainless steel for high temperature resistance from -22°F to as high as 1500°F (-30°C to 850°C), and differential pressure resistance to 40” w.g. (10,000 Pa). The heat exchanger’s heat transfer plates’ edges shall be folded to positively seal all edges from air leakage and crimped to insure plate stability and alignment, and provide leading edge turbulence to enhance heat transfer. Rec uperator S.p.A Rescaldina (MI), Italy www.recuperator.eu www.recuperatorusa.com The heat exchangers’ plate spacing shall be selectable from very close to very open to match efficiency and air flow requirements, and shall provide complete separation of air streams with no cross- contamination. The heat exchangers shall be washable using water and detergent. The housing of the heat exchangers shall be constructed of galvanized steel, optionally coated to prevent corrosion. The housing of the heat exchangers shall include various corner options, including straight, slide-in, or beveled corners. Integral bypass options with or without dampers shall be available, including lateral or central positions, and internal or external damper drive shaft locations. Heat exchangers shall be available in sizes ranging from 7.87” (200 mm) square and 1,295 CFM (2200 m3/h) to 94.88” (2410 mm) square and 55,900 CFM (95,000 m3/h). Heat Recovery System The heat recovery system shall consist of single or multiple fixed plate heat exchangers designed for cross- flow operation within each exchanger. Multiple fixed plate heat exchangers may be assembled to increase efficiency or air flow. When stacked, the heat exchangers shall have interlocking connectors to seal the air passages between the exchangers, and allow easy assembly / disassembly within the air handler. The heat recovery system shall have no moving parts or active seals required for operation, other than bypass dampers. The heat recovery system shall be capable of minimum total efficiencies of 50% when installed and operated in accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines and recommendations. Efficiency ratings shall be based on Eurovent testing, cross-referenced to AHRI ratings. Exhaust and fresh air streams shall have appropriately rated MERV filters to prevent larger particulate contamination from entering the heat exchangers. Execution General The heat recovery system shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and applicable published documents. Commissioning of the system shall be by a qualified, factory trained representative or qualified, licensed contractor, and shall include a training session for owner’s maintenance personnel if requested. The heat exchanger manufacturer shall have design and selection software available to assist in proper sizing and selection. Heat exchangers shall be RecuperatorTM, as manufactured by Recuperator S.p.A. NOTE: Due to Recuperator’s policy of continuous product improvement, these specifications are subject to change without notice.
