Hale worked as the librarian for the Economic Policy Institute in Washington, D.C. where he compiled United States Sanctions and South Africa : A Selected Legal Bibliography. He edited a journal of new poetry titled Screens and Tasted Parallels and his own poems have appeared in several small press magazines and journals. He also authored a chapbook titled Light Still Enough to Witness and had his novel, Saints and Latin Decadence published in 2001. Restrictions Original material deemed too fragile to handle has been photocopied. These preservation photocopies must be used in place of the originals. Scope and Content of Collection The Terrel Hale Papers document Hale's career as a poet, editor, and librarian, as well as the short-lived production of the literary journal Screens and Tasted Parallels, edited by Hale. Materials include correspondence and submissions for Screens and Tasted Parallels, as well as biographical materials and working drafts of Hale's poetry and prose. The accession is arranged in four series: 1) CORRESPONDENCE, 2) WRITINGS BY HALE, 3) MISCELLANEOUS, and 4) SCREENS AND TASTED PARALLELS. SERIES 1: CORRESPONDENCE The CORRESPONDENCE series comprises the bulk of this accession and is organized alphabetically. The series includes letters and poetry submissions from Rae Armantrout, John Ashbery, Charles Bernstein, Clarke Coolidge, Clayton Eshleman, Peter Gizzi, Lyn Hejinian, Anselm Hollo, Fanny Howe, Susan Howe, Jackson Mac Low, Jerome Rothenberg, Ron Silliman, John Taggart, Nathaniel Tarn, and Keith and Rosmarie Waldrop. Hale's own poetry submissions to various journals and magazines are also found in this series, including correspondence bound by Hale, documenting his publication attempts. Materials by unidentified correspondents are located at the end of the series. SERIES 2: WRITINGS BY HALE The WRITINGS BY HALE series is arranged in two subseries: A) Published Poetry, B) Unpublished Writing. A) The Published Poetry subseries includes six poems by Hale that were published in various journals including O-blek and Talisman. B) The Unpublished Writing subseries includes miscellaneous manuscripts, emailed poems, handwritten notepads, working poetry and prose typescripts, and various typed and transcribed poems dating from 1977 to 1997. Also included are several poetry manuscripts bound by Hale, most of which are dated from 1985-1989. SERIES 3: MISCELLANEOUS The MISCELLANEOUS series includes Hale's curricula vita, wedding invitation, recital and concert programs, and photographs. Also included is an audiocassette recording of readings by Terrel Hale. SERIES 4: SCREENS AND TASTED PARALLELS The SCREENS AND TASTED PARALLELS series contains various materials relating to the publication of the journal edited by Hale, including typescripts, page proofs, paste-ups, mailing lists, and lists on and notes about contributors. Also included is a copy of Screens and Tasted Parallels, Issue One, signed by Robert Johnson. The copy has a cover proof for Issue Two attached to the front.
