The origin of this thesis is, like many others before it, born from a sense of disjuncture between what I heard about something, and what I experienced of it. The ‘something’ in question is what is increasingly, and I believe somewhat erroneously, termed as ‘new audio culture’. By this I refer to all scholarly and popular talk and activity concerning iPods, MP3s, headphones, and podcasts: everything which we may understand as being tethered to an older history of audio-media, yet which is more often defined almost exclusively by its digital parameters. -

This American Life Moves to Self-Distribute Program Partners with PRX to Deliver Episodes to Public Radio Stations May 28, 2014 – Chicago. Starting July 1, 2014, Chicago Public Media and Ira Glass will start independently distributing the public radio show This American Life to over 500 public radio stations. Episodes will be delivered to radio stations by PRX, The Public Radio Exchange. Since 1997, the show has been distributed by Public Radio International. “We’re excited and proud to be partners now with PRX,” said Glass. “They’ve been a huge innovative force in public radio, inventing technologies and projects to get people on the air who’d have a much harder time without them. They’re mission- driven, they’re super-capable and apparently they’re pretty good with computers.” “We are huge fans of This American Life and are thrilled to support their move to self-distribution on our platform,” said Jake Shapiro, CEO of PRX. “We’ve had the privilege of working closely with Ira and team to develop This American Life’s successful mobile apps, and are honored to expand our partnership to the flagship broadcast.” This American Life will take over other operations that were previously handled by PRI, including selling underwriting and marketing the show to stations. The marketing and station relations work will return to Marge Ostroushko, who did the job back before This American Life began distribution with PRI. This American Life, produced by Chicago Public Media and hosted by Ira Glass, is heard weekly by 2.2 million people over the radio. -

Media Series - TV Teacher Notes Television in the Global Age Teachers’ Notes The resources are intended to support teachers delivering on the new AS and A level specifications. They have been created based on the assumption that many teachers will already have some experience of teaching Media Studies and therefore have been pitched at a level which takes this into consideration. Other resources are readily available which outline e.g. technical and visual codes and how to apply these. There is overlap between the different areas of the theoretical framework and the various contexts, and a “text-out” teaching structure may offer opportunities for a more holistic approach. Slides are adaptable to use with your students. Explanatory notes for teachers/suggestions for teaching are in the Teachers’ Notes. The resources are intended to offer guidance only and are by no means exhaustive. It is expected that teachers will subsequently research and use their own materials and teaching strategies within their delivery. Television as an industry has changed dramatically since its inception. Digital technologies and other external factors have led to changes in production, distribution, the increasingly global nature of television and the ways in which audiences consume texts. It is expected that students will require teacher-led delivery which outlines these changes, but the focus of delivery will differ dependent on texts chosen. Keywords: gulag, escape, fraud, home-coming. When I was 8 years old, I was taken to see a Disney movie called The Incre- dible Journey (1963). It concerns a Canadian family who are given the chance to live and work in England temporarily. In order to do so they have to leave their three pets, two dogs and a cat, in the care of a friend. A mix-up occurs and the animals are lost. What then follows is an immense trek of three pets across the plains and forests of north-west Ontario to be eventually reunited with their now returned owners many months later and nearly 400 kilometers away to the west. Disney began making films of this type (what it called “True-Life Adventures”) in 1953 with the documentary The Living Desert. In 1957, the same film unit swi- tched over to making what it now called, somewhat oxymoronically, “True-Life Fantasies.” The Incredible Journey, based on the 1961 children’s novel of the same name by Sheila Burnford, was the fourth in a sequence of these. To an 8-year-old, the finely-developed homing instincts of cats and dogs were a source of both great delight and perplexity. Even at that age, the story only seemed to have any point, any sense of uplift, if it were true. -

The Internet Doesn’t Forget: Redefining Privacy through an American Right to be Forgotten Demi Marks* What the “Right to be Forgotten” does is it raises the cost for strangers to find out information about you. It doesn’t make it impossible. So, if you turn out to be a fa- mous important person, become a politician, journalists, biographers can dig it out. It just makes it difficult. But that’s the way things work. That’s the way we secure our homes, for example. We don’t make it impossible to break into our house. That would be far too expensive. We put in a lock that will deter most people. It won’t deter people who are extremely interested in getting into our house. That’s—so you raise the cost without making something impossible. That’s a way of putting a thumb on the scale for privacy.1 I. INTRODUCTION On January 13, 1999, Hae Min Lee was last seen leaving her high school.2 On February 9, 1999, her corpse was found in Leakin Park, having been disposed of after strangulation.3 A year later, on February 25, 2000, her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed was found guilty of Lee’s murder and sentenced to life in prison.4 While these events might seem like old news, the digital age has pushed them back into the limelight. On October 3, 2014, over fifteen years after the murder of Hae Min Lee, Serial, a podcast exploring Lee’s murder and Syed’s guilt, was released to the general public.5 To date, Serial has become the most downloaded podcast ever produced, with over five million subscribers.6 * B.A. -

The fear can take many forms, from the fear of being the last one alive in a horrific situation to being completely deserted by everyone you love. This is a fear that has been showcased many different times in movies, novels, and every other piece of media imaginable. Although not always tied to the horror genre, the fear of being isolated is tightly intertwined with many horror stories. Therefore, it is interesting when a horror production goes out of their way to encourage interactivity within its audience. This goes beyond an artist’s desire for a creation to have a raving fanbase behind it, which is typically generated through external means from the narrative itself. Instead, there is an as-yet-unaccounted-for subgenre of horror that integrates Found Footage techniques with the specific goal of eliciting interactivity within the audience.
