  • Groundwater Management of a Highly Dynamic Karst by Assessing Baseflow and Quickflow with a Rainfall-Discharge Model (Dardennes Springs, SE France)

Bucarin, Six-Fours, France 4 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, United States Abstract – This paper aims at characterizing the groundwater flow in a highly dynamic karst aquifer using a global modeling approach based on rainfall and spring discharge time series. The Dardennes aquifer (SE France) was studied as it is used for drinking water supply and it also produces karst flash floods that increase the flood hazard downstream in urban areas. Three years of data were available, including a normal rainy year, a wet year and a dry year. Modeling was performed with the new platform KarstMod, a rainfall- discharge model with calibration tools. The Dardennes aquifer model was structured with three interconnected reservoirs: Epikarst, Matrix, and Conduit. Using this modeling approach, we were able to determine the groundwater hydrograph separation of the karst spring discharge, at the annual scale and at the event scale (flood). This gives insight into the low flow (Matrix) available for the drinking water demand and the fast flow (Conduit) that generates flash floods.

Climate risks, digital media, and big data: following communication trails to investigate urban communities’ resilience Rosa Vicari1, Ioulia Tchiguirinskaia1, Bruno Tisserand2, and Daniel Schertzer1 1Hydrology Meteorology and Complexity Laboratory, École des Ponts ParisTech, Marne-la-Vallée, Champs–sur–Marne, 77455, France 2Veolia Research and Innovation, Chemin de la Digue, Maisons Laffitte, 78600, France Correspondence: Rosa Vicari ([email protected]) Abstract. Nowadays, when extreme weather affects an urban area, huge amounts of digital data are spontaneously produced by the population on the Internet. These ‘digital trails’ can provide an insight on the interactions existing between climate-related risks and the social perception of these risks. According to this research ‘big data’ exploration techniques can be exploited to monitor these interactions and their effect on urban resilience. The experiments presented in this paper show that digital 5 research can bring out the key issues in the digital media, identify the stakeholders that can influence the debate and, therefore, the community’s attitudes towards an issue. Three corpora of Web communication data have been extracted: press articles covering the June 2016 Seine River flood; press articles covering the October 2015 Alpes-Maritimes flood; tweets on the 2016 Seine River flood. The analysis of these datasets involved an iteration between manual and automated extraction of hundreds of key terms; aggregated analysis of publication incidence and key term incidence; graph representations based on measures of 10 semantic proximity (conditional distance) between key terms; automated visualisation of clusters through Louvain modularity; visual observation of the graph; quantitative analysis of its nodes and edges. Through this analysis we detected topics and actors that characterise each press dataset, as well as frequent co-occurrences and clusters of topics and actors.

Storm Xynthia reached the French coast during the night of 27-28 February 2010, causing sudden and extensive marine flooding. The human toll was very heavy: 29 deaths con- centrated in La Faute-sur-Mer in the Vendée and 12 deaths in Charente-Maritime. On 15 June 2010, the Var was hit by extraordinary floods triggered by overflowing rivers and run-off, in turn caused by exceptional rainfall. The Draguignan area and the Nartuby and Argens valleys were particularly hard hit. The death toll was 23, with nine peo- ple losing their lives in Draguignan; another two people were reported missing. Hundreds of people also suffered both physical and psychological trauma, losing their homes and all their belongings.
