The entry for Dursley and Berkeley, which also covered Cambridge, Uley and Newport, gave a comprehensive listing of the many trades people in the area together with a good gazetteer of what the town was like at that time. The entry for Dursley and Berkeley is found on pages 105-116. This transcription was carried out by Andrew Barton of Dursley in 2005. All punctuation and spelling of the original is retained. In addition the basic layout of the original work has been kept, although page breaks are likely to have fallen in different places.

ISSUE 269 ON THE EDGE FEBRUARY 2021 Alison’s Tree-mendous Birthday Challenge In celebration and gratitude for 70 wonderful years of family, friendship, love and life on our awesome planet, (over half of which I realise have been spent in North Nibley), I have set myself a birthday challenge. The challenge is to encourage the planting of trees; specifically 700 in North Nibley Parish in the next 12 months and also in the wider world. An initial post on the North Nibley Community Facebook page generated an encouraging response, including offers of various saplings, which have now been directed to good homes, where I hope they will grow and flourish. I plan to create a record, so if you do choose to join in, let me know what you do and I will add you and your contribution to the Roll of Honour! To date some 40 trees have been recently planted in Nibley including 30 hazel saplings, an oak, apples, cherries , plums and a liquidambar. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the environmental crisis, but we can all make an individual contribution in some way…. And although you can count the seeds in an apple, you can never know how many apples will grow from those seeds……Let’s get planting. (Alison Beer above) [email protected] tel 01453 546251 text 07765869412 or via Facebook Messenger. There are a number of ways you can support this challenge - see back Thank you, Dr. Edward Jenner 2021 is the year of hope. The the public, lovingly cared for, and year when the world will start to offer informative and educational recover from the threat of the Covid- displays and events about the 19 virus which has blighted 2020.

  • Future of Town Centres Stroud, Nailsworth
DRAFT FUTURE OF TOWN CENTRES STROUD, NAILSWORTH, STONEHOUSE, DURSLEY, WOTTON UNDER EDGE 1. INTRODUCTION This study aims to consider what the major town centres within Stroud District Council will look like in 2031 and how they may function. The study further considers what policy levers are at the disposal of SDC to modify negative effects or boost positive effects of change and how effective they are likely to be. In seeking to achieve this objective the study is divided into the following sections. The second section will consider the national context, whilst the major towns in the District are imbued with an individual character and are likely to require consideration of individual policy responses to the challenges of the future they will all come under the influence of the national context in which they operate. The third section of the study will consider critically the existing policy context and the existing evidence base. The fourth section of the study will examine the existing character and health of each of the Town centres. The fifth section will report on the presentation of the findings of the first four sections of the study to stakeholders in each of the Towns. The section will include the stakeholder’s suggestions for potential policy changes to respond to the likely changes to the Towns. The final section of the study will consider the strengths; weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) to each Town. This section will also consider, drawing on the stakeholder engagement, the potential policy responses by Stroud District Council and their likely efficacy. 2.

Summary 13 Report on Dursley housing stock (September 2015) 2 Gloucestershire Rural Community Council 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 This report was prepared by the Stroud Rural Housing Enabler in order to provide a summary of the existing housing stock in Dursley. In this instance it was decided not to carry out a full housing need survey (HNS) and, instead, the data was drawn from ACRE’s Rural Evidence reports which are based on the 2011 Census. Although this data may be considered less up-to-date than that gathered from a more recent housing need survey, because the Census includes all households, it is perhaps more representative than a HNS which would only represent the proportion of households who respond – usually between 25-40%. Additional information on the current social housing stock was provided by the Housing Strategy Office at Stroud District Council and information on current house sales and rent prices and volumes were obtained from www.rightmove.com and the Land Registry. 1.2 The Rural Housing Enabler (RHE): is employed by Gloucestershire Rural Community Council, which is part of the national network of Rural Community Councils (ACRE - Action with Communities in Rural England). Works closely with rural communities, housing associations, local authorities, other community organisations (including community land trusts) and landowners to meet the affordable housing needs of rural communities.
