Born Under a Bad Sign © Roy Den Hollander 2019 Paint It Back In 1947, breech births were dangerous to newborns, so many mothers chose caesarian sections. The problem was it left a scare, so vain mothers avoided it, as did mine. Even so, my luck did not hold out—I survived. A person’s earliest memory allegedly portends his future—perhaps. Let’s see. My earliest was around four or maybe younger. It was before my imprisonment in nursery school. I’m standing behind my mother who’s cooking on the stove. What she’s cooking is beyond me, since I’m so short, I can’t see the top. My view is looking upward at her rear end, which wasn’t bad. In her early 40s, she was still in shape and a good-looking babe. “What’s for dinner? I ask more than once not getting an answer. She spins around in a flash with that screwed up face of unrepentant anger and yells, “Don’t bother me. I wish I had listened to your father and never had you!” For about the next decade, that was her favorite incantation of meanness. Guess she was hoping like all witches that I would disappear. It didn’t work, unfortunately. But by the age of 1 14, I was bigger than her and my brain had matured enough to verbally fight back. So on one occasion of her now-well-passed-her prime rage when she barked, “I wish I had listened to your father and never had you!” I coolly replied, “I wish you had too.” She never pulled that rant again. -

Securities and Exchange Commission Historical Society Interview with Peter Derby Conducted on June 12, 2015 by William Thomas WT: This is an interview with Peter Derby for the SEC Historical Society’s virtual museum and archive of the history of financial regulation. My name is William Thomas. The date is June 12th, 2015, and we’re in Irvington, New York. So, thanks very much for agreeing to speak with us. We usually start with some biographical background, and I know that your biography was particularly influential in your career, in how you got started with business banking and investment in Russia. So, could you tell me a little bit about that? PD: Sure. First, thank you for having me participate in this really great program, having oral histories of people that participated in the jewel of the federal government called the SEC. So, I thank you very much, and welcome. Well, I started my life in New York City, born and raised in New York City of a Russian immigrant family, and spoke Russian at home until I was five years old, and then went to kindergarten and first grade and learned to speak American. As a Pan American stewardess once told me, “You do not speak English; you speak American, young man,” flying on one of my first flights to Detroit. I grew up in Jamaica, Queens, in one of the boroughs of New York, and then went to New York University. -

Asia e University, Kampung Attap, 50000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia ABSTRACT Scholars have argued that voting behaviour changes over time and, today, voters are no longer loyal to traditional ‘political brands’. We, hence, try to explore, through constructing ‘action corpora’ using novels, movies and TV dramas from the last 50 years (1960-2012) relating to fictional US presidents to see what the mass media have been conveying to the public subconsciously over time. We then looked at and discussed how people have responded since they last voted over the past five US presidential elections from 1992 through 2008 using excerpts from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). While voters were found to fall into two broad categories when making their voting decisions, powerful media bias right before elections could have caused vote swings and, hence, voters could have voted for ‘the wrong person with all the wrong reasons’ when, in fact, they were subconsciously warned – not by anyone else, but by the mass media.
