8 Wearing sunglasses is cool and very fashionable but most of all, very healthy for you. By Dr. Gary Goberville Sunglasses are essential to protect you from the sun’s harmful UV rays and also help prevent premature wrinkles, Macular changes and Cataracts. However, Not all sunglasses are created equal... polarized and lenses that block the blue light are best. Lens quality is the most important aspect. Inexpensive sunglasses can blur vision and, in some instances, make your vision worse. It is recommended to purchase them from a Doctor's office to ensure you get lenses that help and not harm you. Here are 5 reasons to wear good sunglasses. Reasons to Wear Sunglasses 1.) UV Protection. The sun's UV radiation can cause cataracts; benign growths on the eye's surface; and photokeratitis, which is a temporary but painful sunburn of the eye's surface. 2.) Blue-Light Protection. Long-term exposure to the blue and violet portion of the solar spectrum has been implicated as a risk factor for macular degeneration, and pre-mature Cataracts especially for individuals that are “sun sensitive.” Dr. Gary Goberville, 3.) Comfortable vision. In the car at the beach or on the boat. 20 Inviting or Selling By Michael Armfield The other day I received a message from an acquaintance asking me to attend a party. Sounds normal, right? You are asked to attend events all the time. This request to attend was different, strange, and maybe even a little desperate. The message listed all the rea- sons why I “should” be there. After I thought about it, I realized a few things. One, I did not know the person very well. Two, it felt like I was being sold all the reasons why I would want to be there. Why would someone have to tell me why I wanted to be there? As I thought more about whether or not I would attend I started thinking through if I wanted to spend my time at this event. I quickly began thinking about what it would really be like to attend. Then I found myself asking the big question; what was in it for me? I realized that this mode of thinking was not the one I wanted to embrace in deciding if I would go. I love going to a party and I love meeting new people and trying new things. That being said, I also value my time. Balancing my family life and running my business is a 24/7 commitment, one that I take very seriously. I decided to not attend this party and replied accordingly. As I communicated my decision I began to think about why this felt so weird to me. In your life you have all sorts of folks asking you for your time, your talent, and your treas- ure. So how do you decide where you will invest your most valuable commodities? I then began to think about how this experience reminded me of how many businesses operate when they are trying to court new customers. Think about the last time someone tried to sell you something. Think about the messaging that showed up in your inbox. How did it feel as you read it and realized that you did not need the product or service, and you did not even know the person or company that sent you the message? If you are like most you quickly discarded the message and moved on with your life. Now I want you to think about how you feel when you receive an invitation from a friend or company that has brought great value to your life. It brings a completely different vibration. You get excited, you begin to look forward to it, and you quickly respond with a “Yes, I can’t wait to be there”. Invitations and sales pitches are two very different things. Invitations are received because there is a relationship with the sender. Sales pitches are discarded because you know you are being sold something that is not relevant to your needs. This month I want you to think about your business and ask one very simple question. Are you inviting people to something they want and need? Or are you trying to sell something to anyone that will show up? This is a powerful litmus test for your business. You are spending your dollars to market to who you think will soon become customers. Are those dollars being spent well? What kind of conversion rates are you experiencing? What kind of invitation would you like to be sending to your prospects? Would it highlight why “they should be there”, or does it invite them to something they need and love? We love helping business owners craft marketing messages that are received as invitations and not sales pitches. We love helping you tell your story to folks who match your “raving fan” customer profile. February is upon us and it is time to stop selling and start inviting folks to the product or service you offer that will change their lives. 27 Written by Cheri Tisman, photos by Frankie Gaynor It was pouring rain, with wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph, and just in general, Coral Springs had some pretty nasty weather on Friday, January 15. But nothing stopped the hundreds of Coral Springs residents and guests from attending the unveiling and monument dedication of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Monument at the Coral Springs Northwest Regional Library on University Drive. “For the past 26 years, the City of Coral Springs Martin Luther King Committee has dedicated itself to living the Dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” said Dr. Mark Gendal, Chair of the MLK Monument Committee. “We raised over $100,000 for this monument, (designed by artist Dari). Everything just came together. The Monument is the only Martin Luther King, Jr. monument in all of Dade and Broward County.” Dr. Gendal went on to say, “When the committee presented the idea to organizations about the monument and asked for donations, these organizations not only donated, but it spurred off so many other things…. In other words, not only did everyone step up to the plate to donate, but they stepped up with ideas to make the world a better place. They wanted to make the dream a reality and they did. It’s really a testa- ment to who we (Coral Springs and the surrounding areas) are.” The guest speaker at the dedication event was Alphonso Jackson, for- mer HUD secretary. What stood out in his speech was that “When he was 18 years old, he participated in a march at Selma, Alabama with Dr. King, Andrew Young, John Lewis and others,” said Dr. Bessie Cristwell, Chair of the MLK Scholarship Committee. “He was speaking and looked over at Andrew Young, and said, "It is the hater who suffers more than the one who is hated.” Mr. Jackson said his parents taught him who he was as a young boy, and he was successful because someone was always there to help him. He mentioned that," You must believe in your- self!" His parents told him, he could be whatever he wanted to be. The principles he learned early in life from his parents and other associa- tions, positively influenced his success,” Dr. Cristwell said. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee dedicated their time and tal- ent to bring this monument to Coral Springs. It was a week-long cele- bration for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr with the Arts and Literary awards, the MLK scholarships awards, and ending with the monument's dedica- tion. It proudly stands 10 feet tall, 9 feet wide and weighs over 13,000 pounds. Please take the time to stop by and visit this great tribute.
