Abstract: Orville W. “Sonny” Martin Jr., an Oshkosh, Wisconsin native, describes his experiences growing up in a military family; serving in the 3 rd Platoon, A Company, 59 th Armored Infantry Battalion, 13 th Armored Division during World War II; training the 4th Field Artillery Battalion and the 35 th Quartermaster Pack Company during the Korean War; serving in Taiwan in 1959; and working at the Pentagon during the Vietnam War. Martin describes the service of his father, a Neenah (Wisconsin) native, during World War I and his parents’ wedding at Camp Stotsenburg (Clark Air Force Base) in the Philippines. Martin touches upon his military ancestry including a great-great-uncle, “General” Warren Healy, who was a drummer boy during the Civil War and became Paymaster General of New York during the Spanish-American War. Martin grew up an “Army brat” on various bases, including: West Point (New York), Fort Ethan Allen (Vermont), Fort Sill (Oklahoma), Schofield Barracks (Hawaii), Fort Hoyle (Maryland), Baton Rouge (Louisiana), and Fort Leavenworth (Kansas). He discusses at length his schooling and social interactions among children of officers and enlisted men. Martin details family life on the base which he calls a “very moral society.” Martin tells stories of corporal punishment and officers disciplining others’ children, a practice that faded in the 1960s.

The manual states “For a complete listing of duties and tasks, refer to MCO 1510.35C.” 2. MCO 1510.35C, The Individual Training Standards for Occupational Field 03, contains no duty descriptions either. It merely lists training tasks required for each rank. There is no prioritization. There are no stated minimum requirements. 3. FMFM 6-5 Marine Rifle Squad does not contain a comprehensive description of the duties of the rifle squad leader. 4. This document attempts to fill this gap. The following draft squad leader billet description is proposed for inclusion into MCO 1510.35C. 5. A billet description serves the following purposes: a. Defines the requirements for promotion. A Marine should be competent in his current billet before being considered for promotion. b. Defines the school curriculum. A squad leader course teaches those skills required by the squad leader billet description. Both units and schools refer to a common reference, which resolves differences of opinion. c. Guides training and evaluation. Marines can train and prepare for their next billet.

    The Star-spangled Avenger Adapted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Captain America first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (Cover dated March 1941), from Marvel Comics' 1940s predecessor, Timely Comics, and was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. For nearly all of the character's publication history, Captain America was the alter ego of Steve Rogers , a frail young man who was enhanced to the peak of human perfection by an experimental serum in order to aid the United States war effort. Captain America wears a costume that bears an American flag motif, and is armed with an indestructible shield that can be thrown as a weapon. An intentionally patriotic creation who was often depicted fighting the Axis powers. Captain America was Timely Comics' most popular character during the wartime period. After the war ended, the character's popularity waned and he disappeared by the 1950s aside from an ill-fated revival in 1953. Captain America was reintroduced during the Silver Age of comics when he was revived from suspended animation by the superhero team the Avengers in The Avengers #4 (March 1964). Since then, Captain America has often led the team, as well as starring in his own series. Captain America was the first Marvel Comics character adapted into another medium with the release of the 1944 movie serial Captain America . Since then, the character has been featured in several other films and television series, including Chris Evans in 2011’s Captain America and The Avengers in 2012. The creation of Captain America In 1940, writer Joe Simon conceived the idea for Captain America and made a sketch of the character in costume.

Airspace control measures (ACM) such as Restricted Operating Zones . do not inte- grate airspace users . ACMs deconflict users via exclusive volumes of airspace. Because airspace is a finite resource, as the number of airspace users increases, AC2 elements run out of airspace. To effectively put more users in a given volume of airspace, AC2 elements must provide real time separation from other users and fires. Real time control of a volume of airspace, whether positive or procedural, requires communication with all users, a common reference system, and authority to direct/control the users without affecting their flexibility and freedom of maneuver.1 Colonel Curtis V. Forty For the Union: Civil War Generals Buried in Spring Grove Cemetery by James Barnett f the forty Civil War generals who are buried in Spring Grove Cemetery, twenty-three had advanced from no military experience whatsoever to attain the highest rank in the Union Army. This remarkable feat underscores the nature of the Northern army that suppressed the rebellion of the Confed- erate states during the years 1861 to 1865. Initially, it was a force of "inspired volunteers" rather than a standing army in the European tradition. Only seven of these forty leaders were graduates of West Point: Jacob Ammen, Joshua H. Bates, Sidney Burbank, Kenner Garrard, Joseph Hooker, Alexander McCook, and Godfrey Weitzel. Four of these seven —Burbank, Garrard, Mc- Cook, and Weitzel —were in the regular army at the outbreak of the war; the other three volunteered when the war started. Only four of the forty generals had ever been in combat before: William H. Lytle, August Moor, and Joseph Hooker served in the Mexican War, and William H. Baldwin fought under Giuseppe Garibaldi in the Italian civil war. This lack of professional soldiers did not come about by chance. When the Constitutional Convention met in Philadelphia in 1787, its delegates, who possessed a vast knowledge of European history, were determined not to create a legal basis for a standing army. The founding fathers believed that the stand- ing armies belonging to royalty were responsible for the endless bloody wars that plagued Europe.

This building is a sleek art deco style building that the County wants to take down for the library. It recently celebrated its 70"' birthday aod was one of the first buildings in Orangeburg made out of cinder block. I met recently with the Orangeburg County Historical Society aod I am handing out a letter aod a picture of the building in question and the Historical Society is asking that this building be saved and the building be integrated into the County's plao for the library complex. I would ask. if you could please read this aod take a look at it and be in consideration." Mayor Pro Tern Keitt asked, "Have you spoken to the County?" Mr. Green replied "Yes, and they are determined to take it down, bull, along with the Orangeburg Historical Society, are sending letters to the State not to take it down.
