arch, a year ago the pandemic was beginning to become a major crisis. March 1st was the first reported case of the virus in Florida. As the Mmonth progressed, some bars and restaurants were shuttered, and in late March the governor issued a stay at home mandate; on March 2nd Florida Dept. of Health issues guidelines. The club house was closed, the pool was off limits. All activities canceled. Here we are a year later, and boy was it a year. Hopefully, that is behind us and we can return to some normalcy. We announced in our February meeting the approval by the owners of the park three new pool tables to be installed by the end of February, we also announced the request for new outside message boards to replace the existing ones, and the laundry room was recently painted. New business: we will be receiving the rent increase notice by the end of March. I will be ad- dressing some of the issues concerning the rent increase at the HOA MEETING: MARCH 8TH, 7;00 PM AT THE CLUBHOUSE. Please make plans to attend if you have any questions. Please pay HOA DUES Elsie Bonarrigo Lot # 335. She has a slot in her door to drop the envelopes. The March meeting will be our last meeting until the fall. Oak Crest / Acorn Residents’ Club, Inc. Annette Watts, President, Lot 504, 843-457-9599 s we wind down for the summer there are a few things left to do. Our last Residents’ Club meeting will be March 1st. We are looking for suggestions for Anext year. Unfortunately this year was very disappointing as we couldn’t do much as far as activities. Hopefully it will be different next fall. March 6th is the last pancake breakfast. We will be serving bacon, sausage, pancakes, scrambled eggs, coffee, Oj and a sweet roll. 8:30-10:00 a.m. $5.00 I would like to thank everyone who supported us as we are getting new people trained. We lost several people this past year due to health. I would like to thank Chuck for going in at 6:00a.m. with me to get the ovens going and setting up for all the workers so they can get started when they get in. Kathy Brady for cooking the meat and serving, Bob Lightner for cooking the pan- cakes, Calvin Kohn for getting the eggs ready, and Steve Stancick for cooking the eggs. I would also like to thank Linda Galan, Annette Habbe, Karen Stancick, Sharon Manship, and “crazy” Karen Tonzi for serving. A big thank you to Liz Bierfelt and Dave Brown for sell- ing tickets. We could not do this without all of you. Most of all a big thank you to all who come to the breakfast and support us.

We will be looking for activities we can do safely this summer. Suggestions are welcomed. Everyone please stay safe for the summer! The food was fabulous and we would like to thank T“Barbeque Don” for once again fixing a great dinner for all to enjoy. The actual price of the Barbeque dinner was $12.00. The Resident’s Club paid the $2.00 per person per person as a gift to everyone who purchased a ticket.

Hopefully the COVID-19 will be a thing of the past by next season. We have two bands sched- uled, one for Christmas and one for January. Keep your fingers crossed!

We are always open to new suggestions for events. If you have a suggestion please let me know. There is also a suggestion box next to the library you can use.

Looking forward to next season!

EATHS: DNancy Hochstetler, 446 Basket Oak, in Middlebury, Indiana on Feb. 8th IN THE NEWS hree Cuban nationals were rescued after surviving more than 30 days on a deserted island in the Bahamas. A U.S. Coast Guard crews operating from Miami spotted the trio waving Ta large makeshift flag during a routine air patrol around Anguilla Cay. Weather delayed the rescue by about one day. The crew dropped the group food, water and a radio, and the U. S. Coast Guard Clearwater helicopter was deployed to the scene to hoist the group to safety. The group included two men and one woman; they were taken to the Medical Center in Key West. According to the Cost Guard, the group had been stranded for 33 days, they had struggled to find fresh water and had been living on conch shells, rats and coconuts. Lt. Justin Dougherty said “That is pretty extraordinary, I don’t know how they did it , I am amazed that they were in such good shape. ...continued on page 8 OAK CREST/ACORN MESSENGER MARCH, 2021 S 7 A 41-year-old man, Stephen Jennings of Guthrie Oklahoma, was pulled over by police for an expired tag on his car. Jennings and the passenger were placed in police custody. Upon further inspection, officers then found a silver canister containing a yellow powdery substance, which was labeled uranium. Jennings was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, open container of alcohol, suspended license and failure to carry a security verification form. As for hos friend, she was charged with possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY aint Patrick, who lived during the fifth century, is the patron saint of Ireland and its na- tional apostle. Born in roman Britain he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave Sat the age of 16. He later escaped but returning to Ireland and was credited with bringing Christianity to the people. In the centuries following Patrick’s death [believed to be on March 17th, 461] the mythology surrounding his life became ever more ingrained in the Irish culture; Perhaps the well-known legend of St. Patrick is that he explained the Holy Trinity using the three leaves of a native Irish clover, the shamrock. Since around the 9th or 10th century, people in Ireland have been observ- ing the Roman Catholic feast day of St. Patrick on March 17. The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place not in Ireland but in America. Records show that a St. Patrick’s Day parade was held on March 17, 1601 in a Spanish colony in what is now St. Augustine, Florida. In 1848, several New York Irish Aid societies decided to unite their parades to form one official New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Today, that parade is the world’s oldest civilian parade and the largest in the United States, with over 150,000 participants. Each year, nearly 3 million people line the 1.5-mile parade route to watch the procession, which takes more than 5 hours.

n a beautiful Sunday morning, everyone in the town of Johnstown got up early and went to the local church. Before the services started, the townspeople were sitting in their Opaws and talking about their lives and families. Suddenly, Satan appeared at the front of the church. Everyone started screaming and running for the front entrance, trampling each other in a frantic effort to get away from evil incarnate. Soon everyone had left, and the church was empty, except for one elderly gentleman who sat calmly in his pew, not moving, seemingly oblivious to the fact that God’s ultimate enemy was in his presence. Now this confused Satan a bit, so he walked up to the man and said, “Don’t you know who I am?” The man replied “yep, sure do.” Satan asked, “aren’t you afraid of me?” “Nope sure ain’t,” said the man. Satan was a little perturbed at this and queried, “why aren’t you afraid of me?” The man calmly replied, “BEEN MARRIED TO YOUR SISTER FOR OVER 48 YEARS.”

The neighbor was concerned and said, “that’s an awful big hole for a goldfish isn’t it?” Tim patted down the last heap of dirt, then replied “That’s because he is inside your STUPID CAT.”

The math teacher posed a problem to her high school students. A wealthy man dies and leaves ten million dollars to be disposed of as follows; One fifth is to go to his wife, one fifth is to go to his son, one sixth is to go to his butler and the balance is to go to Charity. Now what does each one get.? A savvy student stood up and answered, “A LAWYER.”

“You know what Charlie, I killed five flies yesterday, three males and two females.” “How could you tell them apart joe?” “It was easy, the three males were sitting on a case of BEER and the two females were on the PHONE!

OAK CREST/ACORN MESSENGER MARCH, 2021 S 27 The Marble Statue

marble statue stood in the middle of a large city, surround- ed by hundreds of marble tiles that visitors from all over A the world stood on to admire the statue’s beauty. One night, when the city square was empty, one of the marble tiles right in front of the statue spoke. “Hey, statue, don’t you think it’s not fair that people from all over the world come here to admire you while ignoring and stepping on me?” The statue replied, “Don’t you remember we were actually cut from the same block of marble?” “Yes, I do! That’s why it’s even more unfair. Both of us came from that block, and yet the world treats you so diff erently now!” The statue said, “Do you remember the day the sculptor tried to work on you, but you resisted his tools?” “Yes, it hurt! I hated him! How could he use those nasty tools on me?” The statue continued: “Well, because you resisted his tools, he couldn’t work on you, so he decided to give up and work on me instead. I knew at once that I would be something dif- ferent and unique after his eff orts, so I bore all the painful tools he used on me and allowed him to craft me as he wanted.” “But those tools were so painful!” The statue said, “My brother, there is a price for everything in life. You decided to resist and give up, so you can’t blame anybody who steps on you now.” The marble tile silently listened to the statue’s words and started to refl ect on them

The Defective Phone

n elderly gentleman took his cell phone to a repair shop. “I’ve only had this phone for a few weeks, but it doesn’t receive calls. Can you fi x it A for me?” The technician took it into the back and came out a few minutes later. “Actually, there’s nothing wrong with this phone. I tested it, and it receives calls just fi ne.” The old man stared at him, then took the phone. “Then why aren’t my children calling me?” The technician didn’t know what to say. As the old man turned to leave, he asked qui- etly, “Do you call your parents?” The technician was caught off guard. Between his job, his bills, raising his family, and all the other distractions of his life, he realized he hadn’t called his mother and father in weeks. “Do me a favor,” the elderly man said. “Call them right now.”

32 OAK CREST/ACORN MESSENGER MARCH, 2021 S NUMBERS IN THE NEWS

andemic’s impact on home buying preferences What are you looking for in a new home in 2021? A PZillow survey reported by the World Property Journal web- site noted the top trends of home buyers these days: • Zoom rooms. As people grow more accustomed to working from home at least part of the time, the desire for designated rooms for virtual meetings has grown. Zillow’s survey found that the number of home listings mentioning “home of- fi ce” or “Zoom room” rose by 48.5% compared to the same time last year. • Staycation amenities. Many of us are still leery about travel, so home-based luxuries are on the upswing. “Pool” was the top keyword search term on Zillow in 2020, with “deck” and “waterfront” in the top 10. Listings mentioning a free-standing tub typically sold for 5.5% more than expected, and the keyword “spa-inspired” contributed to a 1.8% price premium. • Gourmet kitchens. We’re cooking at home more, so we want the facilities to do it right. Zillow found that 41% of people value a well-equipped kitchen more than before because of social distancing. Similarly, Berks Homes has seen increased requests for alternate kitchens and island additions. • Backyard oases. People want more room to enjoy the great outdoors safely. Forty-one percent of people in a Zillow survey from the Harris Poll said they valued a large outdoor space more as a result of social distancing. Home listings that mentioned “fi repit” sold for 2.8% more than similar homes, and “outdoor kitchen” sold for 4.5% more. • Pet-friendly living. We sought animal companionship during the lockdown. A July Neilsen survey found that 20% of respondents had adopted one or more dogs or cats be- tween March and June of 2020. Zillow found that listings mentioning a pet shower or dog wash sold for 5.1% more than similar homes.

Teens worry about safety Being a teen is stressful, especially these days. As reported by Forbes, a nationwide sur- vey by Navigate360, a full-spectrum safety preparedness and response company, and national polling fi rm John Zogby Strategies, asked teenagers 16–17 what worries them. Here’s some of what they found: • Fifty-eight percent said they only feel safe at home, a 12-point increase from the group’s previous survey. • Only 37% feel their school has a comprehensive emergency plan. • Fifty-fi ve percent worry about their physical and emotional safety today more than they did six months ago. In large cities, the fi gure is 75%. • Just 55% of teens feel that their school leaders treat safety as a priority, and only 42% believe that schools are spending enough time and money to keep students safe. • Thirty-fi ve percent feel least safe in school, compared to their home, after-school job, favorite restaurant, or church.
