Slik har ConorO’Briengjort enda et gigantsteg fremover med det som blir det fjerdeVillagers-albumet,«The Art Of Pretending To Swim», som slippes viaDomino/Playgroundfredag 21. september. Det nye albumet følger opp det delikate og sparsommelige «Darling Arithmetic» fra 2015, og tar O’Brien litt tilbake til den flerfoldige tilnærmingen han hadde pådebuten fra 2010, «Becoming A Jackal», og oppfølgeren «{Awayland}» fra 2013. I tillegg hører man tydelig også en helt ny sjelfullhet, rytmisk kløkt og enblendende samling av soniske detaljer, både analoge og digitale – noe som skaper feberaktige stemninger i form av uanstrengt lett tilgjengelige låter. Dette,sammen med tidvis subtile og velbalanserte lyriske temaer som omhandler eksistensiell frykt og håp i denne desperate, teknologi-fokuserte og dystopisketidsalderen. «The Art Of Pretending To Swim» er Villagers’ mest gjennomførte album til nå. Albumet er skrevet, produsert, mikset og hovedsakelig fremført av Conor O’Brien i hans studio i Dublin. Se videoen til «A Trick Of The Light» HER Hør «A Trick Of The Light» HER Videoen ble regissert av Bob Gallagher, og O’Brien hadde følgende å si om samarbeidet: - Myself and Bob got together and discussed the song thematically and came to the conclusion that there was no other option but to make a short film in which we follow a disheveled shamanistic protagonist who mysteriously triggers an altered state of consciousness in everyone he meets, or at least believes that he does. We also wanted lots of dancing and to inspire a general feeling of "what the hell did I just watch?" in the viewer. Obwohl seine Band The Immediate 2006 ein Album veröffentlichte, das in Irland große Wellen schlug und sogar für einen Choice Music Prize nominiert war, kam es zur Trennung. Nur wenige Wochen später reüssierte O’Brien mit den Villagers. Gestartet als Soloprojekt, rekrutierte er nach Erscheinen der ersten EP „Hollow Kind“ mit den Gitarristen Tommy MyLaughlin und James Byrne, Bassist Danny Snow sowie Keyboarder Cormac Curran die geeigneten Mitstreiter, um Villagers zur echten Band zu formen. Ihr Debüt „Becoming A Jackal“ war ein wunderbares Kleinod behutsam arrangierter Indie- und Neofolk-Musik. Die internationale Presse zeigte sich überwältigt, man verglich sie mit Künstlern wie The Frames, Bright Eyes, Sparklehorse oder Leonard Cohen. In Irland stieg das Album auf Platz 1 in die Charts ein und wurde für einen Mercury- sowie einen Choice Music Prize nominiert. Für die gleichnamige Singleauskopplung verlieh man O’Brien den renommierten Ivor Novello Award, die Irish Times wählte die Band unter die „fünf wichtigsten irischen Künstler der Gegenwart“. My research explores the combination of these priorities with features not usually associated with pop, such as periodic variation, polyrhythmic layering, harmonic ambiguity and melodic counterpoint, with the aim being to create complex and unpredictable music imbued with pop’s directness of communication. The result of this research is a portfolio of four contrasting projects: I.D., a full-length album of songs, Down The Tubes, an instrumental piece designed for private listening, Malicious Insomnia, a concert work written for the new music ensemble Sudden Junction, and Terse, a four-song E.P. These were chosen to demonstrate the wide applicability of my pop- derived musical language, and feature collaborations with established performers from pop, folk, jazz and classical backgrounds.

    1 VILLAGERS (IRL) «Darling Arithmetic» (Domino Records, Release: 10.04.2015) Conor O’Brien may sport a fetching beard these days but the third album he’s recorded as Villagers finds the Dubliner shaving his music right back to the bone. By comparison, his 2010 debut album «Becoming A Jackal» and especially its 2013 successor «[Awayland]» – both hugely acclaimed and Mercury-nominated, while the latter won Ireland’s equivalent Choice Prize – were more detailed, multi-faceted affairs, so «Darling Arithmetic» is a brave and committed new step forward, eschewing the easier route. O’Brien plays every instrument on these exquisite, melodic songs in a beautifully sparse, spacious, intimate, acoustic-leaning fashion, as well as recording and mixing it himself at home, revealing a single- minded artist at the peak of his already considerable songwriting powers. «[Awayland] in particular, I was experimenting with lots of stuff, which I really enjoyed», O’Brien recalls. «But when I started this album, I wanted to get on one line, with the same feeling from start to finish, that I was emotionally satisfied with. Right before I started writing the songs, I watched De Sica’s film ‘Bicycle Thieves’, which has this one clear vision, so beautifully executed and so simple. I even thought of giving each song its own love adjective, like ‘Unrequited’ or ‘Unconditional’. I’d been a bit disappointed in myself for hiding behind metaphors.» «Darling Arithmetic» was recorded by O’Brien in the loft of a converted farmhouse that he shares in the coastal town of Malahide to the north of Dublin.
