In such films, work represents an important site of tension, not only in the wider struggle in Spain between tradition and modernity, but also in the context of the nation’s changing economic landscape in the late- Francoist period, which saw capitalist reforms, the development of the tourism industry, and the rise of consumer culture. In the context of late Francoism, particularly, with the advent of capitalist reforms, film directors and screenwriters of the 1970s utilized formulaic plots with work-related narrative conflicts as a convenient means to explore the consequences and effects of Spain’s timid economic and social liberalization.

  • An Investigation Into Subtitling in French and Spanish Heritage Cinema
AN INVESTIGATION INTO SUBTITLING IN FRENCH AND SPANISH HERITAGE CINEMA by JULIA MORRIS A thesis submitted to The University of Birmingham For the degree of MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Hispanic Studies School of Arts and Law The University of Birmingham December 2009 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. The intellectual property rights of the author or third parties in respect of this work are as defined by The Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 or as modified by any successor legislation. Abstract This thesis examines subtitles written for heritage films from France and Spain, using six films as case studies. Beginning by offering an overview of the history of subtitling, bringing together a range of different accounts of the field, it aims to situate current approaches to subtitling in relation to changing models of translation and language transfer as well as to developments in the study of audiovisual culture. The increasing importance of subtitling in recent decades, together with rapid technological changes, have had a great impact on subtitling practice, making it necessary to address the technical constraints and solutions diachronically and synchronically, in order to develop a framework for the comparative analysis of film subtitles from different periods and countries. By focusing on films of a particular genre, this limited the extent to which any technical differences might be attributed to internal features, and the choice of the heritage genre allowed greater scrutiny of linguistic and cultural issues in audiovisual translation.

SPECIAL HISTORY REPORT THE COLBERT RAID ARKANSAS POST NATIONAL MEMORIAL ARKANSAS by Edwin C. Bearss DENVER SERVICE CENTER HISTORIC PRESERVATION TEAM NATIONAL PARK SERVICE UNTITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR DENVER, COLORADO November 1974 United States Department of the Interior / National Park Service NPS 851 PREFACE This report has been undertaken to provide a documented narrative of the Colbert Raid, its background, and sufficient collateral information to enable an artist to prepare an interpretive painting of this Anglo-Spanish engagement in the trans-Mississippi West. In view of Condition 2 of the donation agreement with the Daughters of the American Revolution, it was mandatory to determine the approximate site of Fort Carlos III and the location of the April 17, 1783, engagement. The report, in accordance with suggestions made by management, consists of three parts- -Section I, recommendations, Section II, a documented narrative; and Section III, data useful to the painter. A number of persons have assisted with the preparation of this report. Particular thanks are due Superintendent D. L. Huggins and Ranger Gregorio S. A. Carrera of Arkansas Post National Memorial for their assistance, interest, and encouragement. My colleagues and friends Jack Walker of the Southeast Archeological Center, Ricardo Torres-Reyes of the North Atlantic Regional Office, and Dr. Harry Pfanz and Barry Mackintosh of Park Historic Preservation read the manuscript in draft, and shared with me their knowledge. Dr. William Sturtevant of the Smithsonian Institution and Mrs. Carol Irwin Mason of Appleton, Wisconsin, discussed with me the likely garb of Colbert and his partisans. • The Blood of the Arena
The Blood of the Arena by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez THE BLOOD OF THE ARENA CHAPTER I THE HERO AND THE PUBLIC JUAN GALLARDO breakfasted early, as he did whenever there was to be a bull-fight. A slice of roast meat was his only dish. Wine he did not even touch; the bottle remained unopened before him. He must keep himself calm. He drank two cups of thick, black coffee, and lighted an enormous cigar, sitting with his elbows on the table and his chin in his hands, looking with dreamy eyes at the guests who one by one filled the dining-room. It was a number of years ago, not long after he had been given "the alternative" in the bull-ring of Madrid, that he came to lodge at a certain hotel on Alcalá Street where his hosts treated him as if he were one of the family, and the dining-room servants, porters, scullions, and old waiters adored him as the glory of the establishment. There, too, he had spent many days wrapped in bandages, in a dense atmosphere heavy with the smell of iodoform, in consequence of two gorings, but the unhappy recollection did not weigh upon him. In his Southern superstitious mind, exposed to continual danger, he regarded this hotel as a charmed shelter, and thought that nothing ill would happen to him while living in it; accidents common to the profession, rents in his clothing, scratches in his flesh perhaps, but no last and final fall after the manner of other comrades, the recollection of whom haunted even his happier hours.

  • Fashion Design
Fashion is a general term for a popular style or practice, especially in clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup, body piercing, or furniture. Fashion refers to a distinctive and often habitual trend in the style with which a person dresses, as well as to prevailing styles in behaviour. Fashion also refers to the newest creations of textile designers.[1] The more technical term, costume, has become so linked to the term "fashion" that the use of the former has been relegated to special senses like fancy dress or masquerade wear, while "fashion" means clothing more generally and the study of it. Although aspects of fashion can be feminine or masculine, some trends are androgynous.[2][3] Fashion design Fashion design is the art of the application of design and aesthetics or natural beauty to clothing and accessories. Fashion design is influenced by cultural and social latitudes, and has varied over time and place. Fashion designers work in a number of ways in designing clothing and accessories; and, because of the time required to bring a garment onto the market, must at times anticipate changing consumer tastes. Fashion designers attempt to design clothes which are functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. They must consider who is likely to wear a garment and the situations in which it will be worn. They have a wide range and combinations of materials to work with and a wide range of colors, patterns and styles to choose from. Though most clothing worn for everyday wear falls within a narrow range of conventional styles, unusual garments are usually sought for special occasions, such asevening wear or party dresses.
