From Abraham to Jesus Matthew 1:1-17 MAIN POINT: JESUS’ EARTHLY FAMILY INCLUDED ABRAHAM, DAVID, AND OTHERS. Jesus is God the Son. God the Son has always existed; no one created Him. God planned to send His Son to earth to save people from sin. Jesus came to earth as a baby. He was born to Mary, who was married to Joseph. Jesus is fully God, and He is fully human too. Jesus came from the family of Abraham and the family of King David. Abraham had a son named Isaac. When Isaac had a family, one of his sons was named Jacob. Jacob was part of Jesus’ family. Years later, a man named Salmon was born into Jesus’ family tree. He married Rahab. Rahab had a baby, and his name was Boaz. Boaz married Ruth. Boaz and FOLD Ruth had a son named Obed. Obed’s son was Jesse. Jesse had many sons, and the youngest was David. David was just a boy when he was chosen to be Israel’s king. Other people in Jesus’ family were kings too. David’s son Solomon was a king. King Jehoshaphat was part of Jesus’ family, and so was Uzziah, Ahaz, Hezekiah, and Josiah. Then came Matthan. Matthan’s son was named Jacob, and Jacob’s son was named Joseph. Joseph is the man who took Mary to be his wife. Mary was Jesus’ mother, and Joseph raised Jesus as his own son. Mary Praised God Luke 1:26-56 MAIN POINT: GOD CHOSE MARY TO BE JESUS’ MOTHER. One day, God sent an angel to visit Mary. She was engaged to be married to Joseph. The angel said to Mary, “Rejoice! You have found favor with God. He is with you.” Mary was very afraid and puzzled. The angel told Mary to not be afraid. He told Mary that she was going to have a very special and unique baby, and they would call the baby Jesus. Mary asked the angel, “How can that happen? I am not married yet.” The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come, and a miracle will happen. The baby will be God’s Son.” Mary replied, “I belong to God. May everything happen just as you said.” FOLD Mary praised God with a song about how great God is. God was keeping His promise to Abraham to bless the whole world through Jesus. Christ Connection: Mary was willing to follow God’s plan, even though being Jesus’ mother would not be easy. Mary wanted to bring praise to God. Likewise, Jesus brought praise to His Father by willingly dying on the cross to save people from sin. Jesus Was Born Matthew 2:1-12; Luke 2:1-20 MAIN POINT: JESUS WAS BORN TO BE GOD’S PROMISED SAVIOR. The Roman emperor announced that everyone needed to be registered for a census. Joseph and Mary traveled to Bethlehem. While they were there, the time came for Mary to have her baby. Mary and Joseph looked for a safe place for Mary to have her baby, but every place was full. So Mary and Joseph found a place where animals were kept, and that is where Mary had her baby, Jesus. She wrapped Him snugly in cloth, and she laid him in a feeding trough. In the same region, some shepherds were out in the fields watching their sheep. All of a sudden, an angel of the Lord stood before them. The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid! I have very good news for you: Today FOLD a Savior, who is Messiah the Lord, was born for you in the city of David.” Then a whole army of angels appeared, praising God. The shepherds went straight to Bethlehem to find Baby Jesus. They found Mary and Joseph, and the baby. The shepherds went and told others about the baby Jesus. The shepherds returned to their fields, praising God. Some time later, wise men came to visit Jesus. They had seen a star in the east—a sign from God that Jesus had been born. When the wise men found Jesus, they fell to their knees and worshiped Him. Christ Connection: The birth of Jesus was good news! Jesus was not an ordinary baby. He is God’s Son, sent to earth from heaven. Seek out answers to your questions this week—through the Bible, your parents, or church leaders. Jesus at the Temple Luke 2:40-52 MAIN POINT: JESUS AND HIS FAMILY WORSHIPED GOD AT THE TEMPLE. Every year, Jesus’ parents traveled to Jerusalem for the Passover feast. When Jesus was 12 years old, Jesus and His family went to Jerusalem together. When it was time to go home, Mary and Joseph began traveling to Nazareth with a large group of people. They did not notice that Jesus was not with them. He had stayed behind in Jerusalem. Mary, Joseph, and the other travelers had been walking for a whole day when they began to look for Jesus, but they could not find Him. So Mary and Joseph went back to Jerusalem to look for Jesus. Finally, they found Him in the temple complex, sitting among the teachers. Jesus was listening to the teachers and asking them questions. Everyone who heard Jesus could hardly FOLD believe how much Jesus understood. When Jesus’ parents saw Him, they were surprised. Mary said, “Son, why have You done this? We’ve been looking everywhere for You.” Jesus asked them, “Didn’t you know that I had to be in My Father’s house?” Christ Connection: Even as a child, Jesus wanted to do His Father’s plan. As Jesus grew up, He became strong and wise. God blessed Jesus as He got ready to follow His Father’s plan: to die on the cross and rescue people from sin.
