LOCAL LOCAL CHOICE VOICE Don’t just talk. Run!

Local Elections MAY 10, 2021 Municipal • Health • Education A Message from the Municipal Electoral Officer

On May 10, 2021, citizens across will have the opportunity to vote in elections for their municipal councils, district education councils and regional health authority boards. What is not known at this early stage are the names that will appear on the ballots as candidates for these elected bodies. Over the coming weeks, hundreds of men and women will weigh the decision of whether to run in these important local elections.

Elections New Brunswick is once again doing its part to raise awareness about these local elections and working with our partners at the Department of Environment and Local Government, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and the Department of Health to encourage people to consider throwing their hats into the ring.

We chose the theme “Local Choice-Local Voice” for this campaign, to drive home the message of what these elections are really all about. These elections represent a way of making sure the voices of local citizens are heard and are part of the decision making process.

Whether it’s serving on your municipal council, as an elected representative on your local district education council, or as a board member of a regional health authority, each of these positions has an impact on the services and programs available at the grassroots level in your community and your province.

The individuals who decide to become candidates are choosing to give back in a very tangible and meaningful way to the communities where they live, work and, in many cases, raise their families.

Undoubtedly, it is not an easy decision to put your name forward as a candidate. Each of these elected positions comes with a commitment that requires you to give up time in what, for many people, is already a busy schedule as you balance the demands of work and home life.

Finally, on behalf of all New Brunswickers, I want to take this opportunity to thank the many mayors and councillors, district education council members, and regional health authority board members who remained in their positions for an additional year following the unexpected postponement of these elections last year. Their dedication to the people of their communities and their positions during a challenging year is commendable and we owe each of them a debt of gratitude.

Good luck to everyone who decides they are ready to get in the race this year. Democracy is better served when electors have the option of choosing from a diverse field of candidates.

Sincerely,

Kim Poffenroth Chief Electoral Officer
