Mohamed4 ABSTRACT Western Nile delta is an important area in Egypt, in which the government has later established new reclamation projects, and irrigation and drainage network. The increase in reclaimed area together with the decrease in the discharge of canals network especially in the 1980‟s lead to shortage of surface water. The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI) has an overall development plan, which will increase the reclamation area to be 625,000 feddan at the western delta area before 2017. A number of management scenarios were defined. These scenarios study alternative conjunctive uses for available water resources in western Nile delta (surface water, ground water, drainage water reuse) to prevent the groundwater aquifer from depletion. The proposed scenarios studied the full completion of the development plan proposed by MWRI for western Delta area by the year 2017. The previously built and calibrated ground water flow model was used to predict the effects of various scenarios on the groundwater aquifer for the present development and for the year 2017 development plan. INTRODUCTION Western Nile delta is an important area in Egypt, which has limited water resources, although it lies on the western part of Nile Delta aquifer. Due to the increased in the area of the reclaimed lands farmers are suffering from shortage of surface water and are forced to depend on the groundwater abstraction from wells. -

Nour, CARE International in Egypt Executive Summary This study is the third output of the SDC‐funded “Improving Employment and Income through Development of Egyptian Aquaculture” (IEIDEAS), a three‐year project being jointly implemented by the WorldFish Center and CARE International in Egypt with support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation. The aim of the study is to gather data on the retailer segment of the aquaculture value chain in Egypt, namely on the employment and market conditions of the women fish retailers in the five target governorates. In addition, this study provides a case study in Minya and Fayoum of the current income levels and standards of living of this target group. Finally, the study aims to identify the major problems and obstacles facing these women retailers and suggest some relevant interventions. CARE staff conducted the research presented in this report from April to July 2012, with support from WorldFish staff and consultants. Methodology The study team collected data from a variety of sources, through a combination of primary and secondary data collection. Some of the sources include: 1. IAHS Publ. no. 243, 1997 255 Hydrogeological and water quality characteristics of the saturated zone beneath the various land uses in the Nile Delta region, Egypt ISMAIL MAHMOUD EL RAMLY PO Box 5118, Heliopolis West, Cairo, Egypt Abstract The Nile Delta saturated zone lies beneath several land uses which reflect variations in the aquifer characteristics within the delta basin. The present study investigates the scattered rural and urban areas and their environmental impacts on the water quality of the underlying semi-confined and unconfined aquifer systems. The agricultural and industrial activities also affect the groundwater quality located close to the agricultural lands and the various industrial sites, which have started to expand during the last three decades. INTRODUCTION It is believed that the population increase and its direct relation to the expansion of the rural and urban areas in Egypt during the last 30 years has affected the demand for additional water supplies to cover the need of the inhabitants in both areas, which in turn has many consequences for aquifer pollution through the effects of municipal wastewater effluent. The construction of the High Dam caused agricultural expansion by changing the basin irrigation system into a perennial irrigation system. Increase in the application of fertilizers and pesticides has caused the pollution of the surface water bodies which are connected with the aquifer systems in the Nile Delta basin. Industrial activities have much affected the groundwater system below the Nile Delta region due to the increase of the industrial waste effluent dumped into the river without any treatment. -

Since mid 1950s, over 30% of Lake Idku was dried to create new agricultural lands. The project was extended in 1960s to include areas west of the delta and south of the new/old reclaimed lands. The first study concerning the quality of soil within the study area, south of Lake Idku, was conducted in 1960 and since then, no updates were undertaken to evaluate the effect of the ongoing agricultural/human activities and land use upon the quality of these reclaimed soils. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the change in soil quality in the area relative to the availed analytical data, chemical composition of irrigation water used and crops cultivated during the fall (2010/2011). The impact of different land uses and activities upon the soil quality in the study area, South of Lake Idku, was determined using multivariate analysis (Hierarchal Clustering) in order to identify similarity in patterns and classifying relationships among the measured soil variables. -

Handoo2† 1Department of Plant Pathology, Faculty of Agriculture, Alexandria University, Alexandria, Egypt 2Nematology Laboratory, USDA, ARS, Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, Beltsville, MD 20705, USA †Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract A nematode survey was conducted in northern Egypt and a total of 240 soil and root samples were collected from the rhizosphere of the surveyed plants. Twenty-three genera of phytoparasitic nematodes were detected in the collected soil and root samples. In soil samples from Alexandria governorate, the sugar beet cyst nematode (Heterodera schachtii) was very common on sugar beet while the root-knot nematodes Meloidogyne incognita and M. javanica were very common on guava, olive trees and sugar beet. Helicotylenchus pseudorobustus, M. incognita, Pratylenchus sp., Rotylenchulus reniformis and Xiphinema sp. were observed in spearmint soil samples. The dagger nematode Xiphinema rivesi was found in orange soil samples from El-Nobarria, El-Beheira governorate. In lantana soil samples from El-Giza governorate, Aglenchus geraerti, Bitylenchus ventrosignatus, Coslenchus capsici, Helicotylenchus indicus and Malenchus bryanti were identified for the first time in Egypt. The actual military struggle, the subsequent settling of Arab tribes and changes in administration are discussed in chapter 1, with reference to specific sites and using local archaeological sequences. Chapter 2 assesseswhether our understanding of the archaeological record of the seventh century is detailed enough to allow the accurate dating of settlement changes. The site of Zawyet al-Sultan in Middle Egypt was apparently abandoned and partly burned around the time of the Arab conquest. Analysis of surface remains at this site confirmed the difficulty of accurately dating this event on the basis of current information. Chapters3 and 4 analysethe effect of two mechanismsof Arab colonisation on Egyptian towns. First, an investigation of the occupationby soldiers of threatened frontier towns (ribats) is based on the site of Tinnis. Examination of the archaeological remains indicates a significant expansion of Tinnis in the eighth and ninth centuries, which is confirmed by references in the historical sources to building programmes funded by the central government. Second, the practice of murtaba ` al- jund, the seasonal exploitation of the town and its hinterland for the grazing of animals by specific tribal groups is examined with reference to Kharibta in the western Delta. -
