Dissertation presented to the Faculty of Arts of the University of Glasgow in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Glasgow March 1996 Page 2 Abstract Academic work on Aboriginality in popular media has, understandably, been largely written in defensive registers. Aware of horrendous histories of Aboriginal murder, dispossession and pitying understanding at the hands of settlers, writers are worried about the effects of raced representation; and are always concerned to identify those texts which might be labelled racist. In order to make such a search meaningful, though, it is necessary to take as axiomatic certain propositions about the functioning of films: that they 'mean' in particular and stable ways, for example; and that sophisticated reading strategies can fully account for the possible ways a film interacts with audiences. -

An Effective History of Young Adults Subjected to Racial Violence
RACE IS A VERB: AN EFFECTIVE HISTORY OF YOUNG ADULTS SUBJECTED TO RACIAL VIOLENCE By VIOLET. R. JOHNSON JONES (Under the Direction of: Elizabeth Adams St. Pierre, PhD.) Abstract: This study uses poststructuralism, Michel Foucault’s “Effective History,” and Africanist epistemology to examine ways in which scholars in k-16 schools perpetuate subjugation by using Eurocentric and other discourses. This study focuses on an interview study I conducted with three students I taught as a high school literacy educator. I use effective history to examine a racially motivated shooting event in which these one sixteen-year-old African-American male, three fifteen-year-old African-American females, and one fourteen-year-old African-American male shot at by a white security guard while attending a field trip in the southern United States. I examine reasons why these students were more afraid of revealing the fact that they were violated to their chaperones than in demanding the justice they deserved. As a participant as well as researcher, I enlist a qualitative researcher and university professor to conduct an intrasubjective interview with me. As a result of this interview, I discovered ways that my discourse as an African-American female educator reflected discourses characteristic of white supremacy. Using effective history, I examined events in the lives three of the young people involved and disclosed how their lives did not always circulate around race issues. This methodology revealed discourses participants used to resist effects of the shooting and other events in which they were raced or subjugated. Participants used Africanist, Eurocentric, and other discourses to negotiate their lives and challenges. -

Oodgeroo Noonuccal (Kath Walker) 1970 Introduction On Australia Day 1973 Dr. Herbert Cole ("Nugget") Coombs, the Chairman of the Council for Aboriginal Affairs, Governor of the Reserve Bank and influential Government advisor to six Australian Prime Ministers, speaking at a University of Western Australia Summer School, declared that, The emergence of what might be called an Aboriginal intelligentsia is taking place in Redfern and other urban centres. It is a politically active intelligentsia…I think they are the most interesting group to emerge from the political point of view in the whole of the Aboriginal community in Australia.[2] Coombs' view was shared by many with an intimate knowledge of the indigenous political movement of the day, but it was a view apparently not shared by the predominately male, non- indigenous Australian historians who have since written about that era. The antipathy of the historical and anthropological establishment toward the urban, militant activists of Redfern, Fitzroy and South Brisbane seems equaled only by an apparent lack of knowledge of events that occurred in these effectively 'closed' communities during the late 60s and early 70s. Attendant as a natural consequence of ignorance of the defining events of these communities, is the manner in which historians have trivialized, marginalized and dismissed the achievements and historical influence of the so-called Australian Black Power Movement. Black Power was a political movement that emerged among African-Americans in the United States in the mid-1960s. -

Unconscious Bias – Is It Time to Change?

Medical Colleges have been asked to ensure that their members understand how unconscious bias grows out of a view of history. I encourage everyone to enjoy the wonderful films and books that describe these cultural differences and to reflect on how to make your units respectful and encompassing of Indigenous culture. Australia is a multicultural country. We can freely talk about the advantages of diversity, we happily embrace the advantages of multiculturalism and we cringe at the thought of discrimination based on race or sexuality. Now let us look at Indigenous and non-Indigenous people of the land, and the paradigm shifts - we start to get uncomfortable. The first thought is that we wish we could do more for Aboriginal people, we are glad we formally apologised even if there was some concern that it would be about compensation. However, it is not our business, we only look after a few Aboriginal people; we do not really know any Aboriginal people and the issues of the past belong in history. Modern Australia is vastly different from the past and it’s good for everyone. We may even believe this if we do not spend too much time contemplating it. However, we annually hear about Closing the Gap initiative. We are part of an Australia with an 11 -year gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Despite having one of the best health services in the world, we are the last amongst equals where it comes to Indigenous health.
