Kamen Rider helped to establish the famous genre of Japanese television and movies known as Tokusatsu. Tokusatsu shows are known for their use of special effects, gigantic monsters, imaginative costumes, and high-flying, fast-paced martial arts fight scenes. Other icons of tokusatsu lore include Ultraman, Godzilla and The Mighty Morphing Power Rangers. Don’t miss this chance to see one of the legends of the genre on the big screen! FUNIMATION ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES NORTH AMERICAN DISTRIBUTION OF DRAGON BALL Z: RESURRECTION ‘F’ World Premiere to Be Held April 11, 2015 at Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles, CA FLOWER MOUND, TEXAS – March 16, 2015. FUNimation Entertainment is proud to announce today its distribution of the theatrical, home entertainment, video on demand and broadcast rights to the upcoming Japanese animated feature film Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’. Dragon Ball will be released by Toei in association with Fox International Productions in Japan on April 18, 2015. Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ represents the nineteenth feature film in the Dragon Ball series, Resurrection ‘F’ is the sequel to Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods which was released by Fox and Toei in Japan in 2014 and grossed more than $30M in Japan. The English dub of the new film will be released in theaters across North America in summer 2015. Series creator Akira Toriyama is directly involved in the film’s production, just as he was in the highly successful Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. Some fans of the franchise won’t have to wait until the summer to see the film, though. FUNimation Entertainment and Toei have teamed up with Fox International Productions & Toei Animation to host the world premiere of Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ (in Japanese w/ English subtitles) at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles, CA on Saturday, April 11. Or, you’ve amassed a collection of these gems already but know there’s more out there. Here’s a user- friendly reference for both pursuits, with quick-and-easy recommendations for Japanese ninja titles from the silent era to the late 80s — their general flavor and tone, varying trends and tropes, and a lot of surprises. CONVENTIONS OF THIS GUIDE: • TITLES — for better or worse I’ve used the most commonly used translations out there. These are often the most accessible references to these films so, even if the title’s been butchered, there’s still a practical advantage when searching them out. • VN as an entity has to be cautious when it comes to supporting/endorsing certain not-so-authorized film collecting activities out there, so sorry, there’s no links here... • YES THERE’S MORE TO COME!
