I have to say by the time I'd finished the wines I was ready to book my holiday in the south west of France. With wines like these to match its regional food, stunning beaches and spectacular rural scenery what could possibly go wrong? Nicely chilled, this sweet wine hits the spot with startling freshness running through its peachy, honeyed fruit. The best of the three was the breathtakingly good Cotes de Gascogne Domaine du Tariquet Dernières Grives 2011 ( £16.90 Wines Society) pictured. Using yeast to de-acidify Petit Manseng Walsh Family Wine Nate Walsh Summary Petit Manseng is a white fruited variety of Vitis vinifera that originated in the Pyrenees-Atlantiques of Southern France and has its largest plantings in the Jurançon (Tablas Creek a). Petit Manseng was introduced to Virginia by Dr. Tony Wolf in 1987 and has becoMe popular aMong producers for its loose clusters, thick skins, and resistance to bunch rots (Wolf 2008). In Virginia, a growing nuMBer of winemakers are exploring dry Petit Manseng as a varietal taBle wine, however, the high sugar and high acidity characteristics of this grape variety can be a challenge for dry wines. In the present study a side By side comparison was done of wines produced By D47 yeast and Anchor Exotics SPH yeast. Product inforMation indicated Anchor Exotics can consume Malic acid during fermentation via the Malo- ethanolic pathway. D47 yeast produced Petit Manseng wine with lower pH, higher acidity, and lower volatile acidity than Anchor Exotics SPH yeast. Anchor Exotics SPH yeast consuMed 26% of the Malic acid in the juice during primary ferMentation. One of the two barrels inoculated with this yeast also showed signs of Malolactic ferMentation. In a triangle test, tasters were aBle to discriMinate between the wines. Though descriptors for aromatic intensity, perception of acidity and overall balance were not significantly different, open ended questions revealed a difference in perception of acidity By soMe tasters. Discussion after the wines were identified indicated there is a difference in preference based on acidity. SoMe wineMakers considered high acidity a desiraBle part of the varietal character of Petit Manseng while others felt the opposite. -

The Gala took place Tuesday evening, February 26, at the Main Street Station in Richmond, Virginia. All wines competing in the Governor’s Cup competition must be made from 100 percent Virginia fruit. The Petit Manseng marks Horton’s first Governor’s Cup winning wine. “It is my pleasure to award this honor to Sharon Horton and her entire winery and vineyard team, including winemakers Michael Heny and Andrew Reagan,” said Governor Northam. “Horton Vineyards is among Virginia’s true wine pioneers renowned for first growing many of the varieties that have taken hold in Virginia. In addition to the winning wine, the eleven wines included in the 2019 Governor’s Cup Case highlight the outstanding quality of wines being produced within our Commonwealth.” Horton Vineyards’ 2016 Petit Manseng is composed of 90 percent Petit Manseng, 5 percent Viognier and 5 percent Rkatsiteli grapes. The wine is 100 percent estate-grown including their Berry Hill vineyard fruit. -

The Hanes Wine Review, June 2013 Edition Hanes made a hearty effort this time around to chug down as much new rosé wine as possible so that his opining on them would be available early. Whew. Sure there will be a few more guzzled in the weeks to come but on the whole, and globally speaking, 2012 seems to be a fat and fruity vintage for rosé, not finding many lean and focused wines. Maybe one needs to spend more dinero to get that experience. Hanes will leave that discussion to those who still enjoy parsing things to the finest granular level possible. You know who you are. * * * * * * * * * * * This monthʼs big winners... Stop fuming and start Fumin with the 2010 Lo Triolet from the Vallée dʼAoste in Italy. Pretty, fruity with just the right amount of complexity, acceptably priced in the high $20ʼs. Was not familiar with Burgundy producer Domaine Chevrot but in 2011 they made a nice little Bourgogne rouge, crunchy and honest and still under $20, in itself a marvel. Three cheers for Roletʼs 2006 Arbois “Tradition” from the Jura, a lovely blend of Savagnin and Chardonnay with both structure and fruit, a joy to sip and very fairly priced at around $21. Just when Hanes decides to stop fooling around with Albariño wines, along comes the 2011 “Granbazán Etiqueta Verde” with a good sense of terroir and acidity and more than just a flat mouth feel and acceptable fruit, $17 or so seems quite fair for it. Having purchased their wines from the initial 1998 vintage to current releases, Hanes never tried Lagier-Meredithʼs rosé so that had to come to an end. -

Grape Variety: Gros Manseng, Petit Courbu Planting Density (vines/ha): 4545 Yield hl/ha: 60 Terroir: From the 3 principal terroirs of the appellation, the stony Nappe de Maucor, clay-limestone and gravelly-clay. Cool exposition (east-facing) so enjoying the early morning sun while avoiding the intense afternoon heat and thus favouring the preservation of aromas and acidity. Deep soils allow the vines plentiful access to water and nitrogen which contribute to the production of fresh, fruity aromas (typically citrus and thiol). An oceanic, temperate climate with mild winters and hot, stormy summers. Pruning Technique: Predominantly single Guyot. Vigour Control: April to September: throughout the vegetative growth period. The soil is ploughed to avoid the grass competing with the vine for water and to maintain vigour levels conducive to the production of aromas: inter-row management. Bud-removal: Early May. Removal of all secondary buds – Careful cleaning of head of trunk. - Thorough de-suckering. Leaf-removal: June - Manual. Very early (before the end of June) to avoid grapes getting burnt by the sun. Leaves are only removed on one side of the vine. The area around the fruit is aerated to allow the grapes to ripen in the shade of the leaves. Canopy Management: May-July Care is taken that shoots do not lie along the wires. A large leaf area of approximately 1.3 -1.4m with restricted depth of canopy. Crop-thinning: Early July - August. If necessary, in order to limit yields. Spreading and aerating of fruit and removal of squashed up clusters. Maturity Control: September Sugar/acid balance control while the vine is still active.
