Mosby commenced irregular operations with just nine men loaned to him by Major General James Ewell Brown “JEB” Stuart in early 1863. At that time, Mosby had no rank and was a scout for Stuart. On April 21, 1865, having achieved the rank of Colonel, Mosby would disband rather than surrender his command which contained over 800 men. In 1992, Colonel John Singleton Mosby was a member of the first group of men honored with induction into the United States Army Ranger Hall of Fame.

Over 3 million Americans fought in it, and more than 600,000 men, 2 percent of the American population, died in it. The war resulted in the abolition of slavery, ended the concept of state secession, and forever changed the nation. One of the 1 1 states to secede from the Union and join the Confederacy, Florida's role in this momentous struggle is often overlooked. While located far from the major theaters of the war, the state experienced considerable military activity. At one Florida battle alone, over 2,800 Confederate and Union soldiers became casualties. The state supplied some 1 5,000 men to the Confederate armies who fought in nearly all of the major battles or the war. Florida became a significant source of supplies for the Confederacy, providing large amounts of beef, pork, fish, sugar, molasses, and salt. Reflecting the divisive nature of the conflict, several thousand white and black Floridians also served in the Union army and navy. The Civil War brought considerable deprivation and tragedy to Florida. Many of her soldiers fought in distant states, and an estimated 5,000 died with many thousands more maimed and wounded. At home, the Union blockade and runaway inflation meant crippling scarcities of common household goods, clothing, and medicine. Although Florida families carried on with determination, significant portions of the populated areas of the state lay in ruins by the end of the war.

    Museum of the West History Docent Guide 2017 Spanish Exhibit Gallery Exploring the Northern Frontier The Rivera Expedition The “Kingdom and Province of New Mexico” and its northern frontiers was a huge geographical area. This kingdom included all or part of New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas. In 1765 New Mexican Governor Tomas Velez Cachupin asked explorer Don Juan Maria Antonio de Rivera to lead an expedition to explore the northern frontier. Governor Cachupin was worried about encroachment by other European powers and wanted to find the legendary Rio del Tizon (Colorado River) and a place to ford it. The Governor was also interested in the legend that was on the other side of the Rio del Tizon River, was Lake Copala, home of an unknown wealthy civilization. Rivera had traveled north before in 1761 and had his own reasons for going that included searching for gold and silver deposits and evidence of native mining activity. Rivera and his men traveled as far north as the present-day City of Durango, Colorado and then returned home to Santa Fe with no news of European intrigue or finding a mysterious civilization. Governor Cachupin, although discouraged, sent Rivera north one more time to reach the Rio del Tizon and report on evidence of this much-rumored civilization. Rivera left Santa Fe in October of 1765 and headed north as far as present-day Delta, Colorado before returning home to Santa Fe. Although unsuccessful in their quest, the expedition had mapped and kept journals of the new lands and people they met.

In 2001, Diane Reed, Chief of the Commission’s Publications and Sales Division proposed that a book be created telling the story of Pennsylvania during the Civil War using the vast holdings of the PHMC. In order to create the book, an overview of the PHMC Civil War holdings was necessary. A SIR collaborative project was funded early in 2002, and Dr. James P. Weeks of the Pennsylvania State University History Department was chosen to create the survey, working with Linda Ries of the Archives staff.
