Karen Mei Ling Lai emigrated from Hong Kong by herself when she was only 16 years old. As a first- generation student, she wants to inspire individuals to aim high, believe in their capabilities, and work toward their dreams. Karen has earned her Bachelor’s degree Summa Cum Laude and her Associate of Science in Respiratory Care as the Class Valedictorian while working full time. Currently, she works as a Respiratory Care Practitioner at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital and serves as the Vice President of California Society for Respiratory Care Greater Bay Area Region. Karen plans to earn up to a Doctorate in Education and become a professor within the next ten years.

Steven Cooney, A.A., B.A. Professor of Cooperative Education, Years of Service: 1988 – 2019
Steven Cooney served as a Professor of Cooperative Education at Skyline College from 1988 – 2019. The Cooperative Education (Coop Ed) Program at Skyline College offers students the opportunity to earn elective units of credit for work experience. Steven had a deep commitment to his students and their educational journey and enjoyed teaching for 31 years. Steven has a BA from San Francisco State University and an AA from Shasta College.
Bridget Fischer, A.A., B.F.A., M.F.A Professor of Art, Years of Service: 1999 - 2020
Artist, art professor, curator of the Gallery Theater, DE Coordinator, regardless of what position Bridget Fischer held at Skyline College, she always went above and beyond. Bridget began teaching at Skyline College in fall, 1999, and will be retiring this December 2020. Her passion was teaching and Bridget’s creativity in the classroom was always on display. The depth of her commitment to her students, her deep respect and fondness for her ‘home’, Skyline College, and her unquestioning willingness to help her colleagues regardless of what the issue was, will be sorely missed.
Mike Fitzgerald, A.A., B.A., M.A. Professor of Kinesiology, Years of Service: 1980 - 2020
Mike Fitzgerald started his career at Skyline College as a student-athlete in 1972. During his three years at Skyline, he played #1 singles, was Team Captain and awarded the Most Valuable Player award for the men’s tennis team in 1974. He was inducted into the Skyline College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986, and into the Pacifica hall of Fame in 2005 for his athletic and teaching / coaching career.
Mike was hired in 1980 as an Instructional Aide and worked 40 years in the Physical Education/Kinesiology Department in both classified and faculty positions. He met his late wife Christie while a student at Skyline. They were married for 28 years and had twin sons who both attended Skyline College. Aaron (now a District Attorney for San Mateo County) played three sports for the San Mateo Community College District and was the top ranked tennis player in the county. Lucas (now a Lutheran High School Principal) was a star baseball player at Skyline, All League Pitcher, and received an Athletic Scholarship to Loyola Marymount University.
Mike taught 14 different activity classes in the Physical Education/Kinesiology Department. He coached the women’s softball team for 14 seasons. Mike later became the Men’s and Women’s Cross-Country Coach and was named “Coach of the Year” in 2000 for the first women’s championship for any sport in the history of Skyline College.
16 Mike was also an important part of the Skyline College Fitness Testing program that has been recognized nationally. He personally has given tests to over 15,000 Skyline College students. He was also a key member of the College Budget Committee and a loud and proud advocate for Skyline College students and programs at the college and district level over the years. He served under many different administrations but is most grateful for current Athletic Director Joe Morello and former Athletic Directors Walt Rilliet, Andy Ruiz and Andreas Wolf. Mike and his wife Mychelle plan on traveling and enjoying life with their five grandkids as well as returning to Skyline College often.
As a man of strong faith and beliefs, Mike wants to thank the thousands of students that he had the gift of teaching and coaching over the past 40 years, is grateful for the support of his colleagues and most of all is blessed to enjoy the love and support of his family in his personal and professional life.
Jan Fosberg, A.A., B.S., M.S. Professor of Kinesiology, Athletics, and Dance, Years of Service: 1986-2021
Jan Fosberg has spent a total of 38 years at Skyline, the first three years as a student-athlete. After receiving her degree at CSU Hayward (East Bay), Jan began her teaching career at Skyline College in 1986 as a part- time volleyball coach and adjunct faculty member teaching a variety of activity courses. After 12 years in an adjunct capacity, Jan became a full-time KAD member in Fall of 1997. Over the course of her career she has coached Skyline’s volleyball, softball, and badminton intercollegiate teams and taught activities such as archery, golf, hiking for fitness, backpacking, and cross training among others.
Jan feels very fortunate to have spent her career at Skyline College where she has enjoyed teaching with so many wonderful colleagues and being a part of so many students’ educational journey.
She looks forward to spending her retirement years pursuing her hobbies of golf, hiking, biking, gardening, and photography both in the foothills and the Bay Area.
Dr. Stephen Hearne, A.A., B.A., M.A., M.S., Ph.D. Professor of Psychology, Years of Service: 1999 - 2019
Dr. Stephen Hearne served as a Professor of Psychology at Skyline College for 20 years. He loved working with and supporting students. He was particularly drawn to the teaching of statistics and research methods in the social sciences, serving as the primary faculty teaching Quantitative Reasoning, his area of expertise. He is a published author, contributing “Basic Math Refresher: Everyday Math for Everyday People” (2004)
Prior to teaching at Skyline College, Dr. Hearne worked as a Runaway Coordinator providing counseling services to runaway teenagers (1987 to 1989). He worked as a Unit Coordinator where he supervised orphan boys (1989 to 1990). He also worked as a Case Manager assisting adults with acquired head injuries (1990 to 1992).
Dr. Hearne earned an AA in Psychology from Fullerton Community College, a BA in Psychology from UC Berkeley, an MA in Psychology from San Diego State University and an MS in Marriage, Child, and
17 Family Counseling from San Jose State University. Dr. Hearne earned his PhD in Psychology from The University of Mississippi, specializing in quantitative psychology, in 1998.
Beyond teaching, Dr. Hearne contributed to the Psychology department through his work in measuring SLOs – student learning outcomes through data collection and analysis. He is an avid fisherman and enjoys working in clay. His ceramics specialty is creating unique handmade art tiles with colorful, intricated designs. His artwork has been featured at the Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica and other locations in the Bay Area. He shared his artistic passion with our Art Department faculty, and often donated tiles to campus Art fundraising events. Dr. Hearne is currently happily retired with his wife Debbie. Together, they enjoy tending to their vegetable garden and numerous fruit trees on their acre of land.
Johannes Masare, B.S. M.A., Ph.D. Professor of Political Science, Years of Service: 1985 - 2020
Dr. Masare began his career teaching Political Science at Dar-es-Salaam University in Tanzania, Africa. He received his masters and PhD from UC Berkeley in 1970 and 1978 respectively and started teaching at Skyline College in 1985. He approached his work with a unique understanding of how education can empower and transform and the important role of teachers in this process.
2020 marks Dr. Masare’s 80th birthday and 35th year as an esteemed member of the Skyline College faculty. When asked in a 2019 Skyline View article about his 50+ years of teaching he said, “That is my calling, my mission, my vocation.” We believe students, faculty and staff agree.
Clair Muller-Moseley, B.A., M.A. Professor of Family Consumer Sciences, Years of Service: 1999 – 2020
Claire Mosley-Muller served as a professor for Family Consumer Sciences from January of 1999 to May of 2020. She taught nutrition and special topics classes in the program and was key in creating the certificate and degree in the Family Consumer Sciences Program. The program was designed to support students going into a variety of fields including clothing, textiles, design, family relations and nutritional sciences.
Claire has a BA and MA from San Francisco State University and is enjoying retirement with her husband while they work on their new retirement home. She is also taking advantage of this new opportunity to travel.
Skyline College wishes Steven, Bridget, Mike, Jan, Stephen, Johannes, and Clair success as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.

Phi Theta Kappa (FQK)
Beta Theta Omicron is Skyline College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. A grade point average of 3.5 or higher is required to participate in the program. For more information about Phi Theta Kappa, please refer to www.skylinecollege.edu/boo.
Kappa Beta Delta (KBΔ)
Kappa Beta Delta recognizes and honors students who have distinguished themselves within the Business Administration program at Skyline College. To be considered for membership, candidates must meet the minimum requirements of 15 credit hours completed and be in the top 20 percent of their business classes.
Honors Transfer Program (HTP)
The Skyline College Honors Transfer Program provides enhanced transfer and educational opportunities for students who seek a challenging academic experience as well as intellectual and personal growth. Graduates of the program have completed at least 15 units of honors courses with a GPA of at least 3.25 and 16 hours of community service.
Academic Regalia
The caps and gowns worn by Skyline College graduates in today’s ceremony carry a strong environmental story while preserving the elegance and tradition of graduation. The acetate fabric fiber is made from natural wood sourced exclusively from renewable managed forests. This fabric is proven to decompose in soil. The gown contains an Eco- ZipTM coil zipper with tape and teeth made from 100% recycled PET. Additionally, the cap and gown are packaged in earth-friendly materials. The purchase of this gown offers graduates an opportunity to give back to the environment by responding to Jostens. For every response received, Jostens will donate $1 to an environmental sustainability project.
Students may choose to wear stoles and cords that designate that they have successfully completed the requirements of different academic programs, learning communities, leadership programs, scholastic honors, student support programs and transfer. Stoles and cords come in a wide range of styles and colors.
Colors and styles worn by individuals in the academic ceremony designate the field in which the highest degree was earned and the institution granting it.
Baccalaureate degree holders wear plain black mortarboards and gowns. Master’s gowns have pointed sleeves. Doctoral gowns have round, open sleeves and are faced down the front and across the sleeves with velvet.
Hoods are worn over the gowns. Bachelor’s hoods are three feet in length. Master’s hoods are 3½ feet long and Doctoral hoods are four feet long with panels at the side.
The inside of the hood or lining is the official color of the institution granting the degree. The color of the outside of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was received. Some of the most common colors are as follows: arts and letters, white; business and commerce, drab; economics, copper; journalism, crimson; music, pink; philosophy, dark blue; physical education, sage green; and science, golden yellow. 19 Special Thanks
