If at any time it shined upon the saints, it also left behind in them the unbearable pain of yearning.” (Basil of Caesarea, c. 329-379) 1 Abstract (Danish) Gennem tre casestudier argumenterer denne afhandling for, at der findes et nært forhold mellem på den ene side den negative teologi, som følger af den radikale, kvalitative distinktion mellem Skaber og skabning, som forefindes i mange tidlige kristne teologier, og på den anden side bestemte moralepistemologiske udviklinger i denne tænkning. Denne distinktion omtales i afhandlingen som den 'jødisk-kristne distinktion'. Ved 'negativ teologi' forstås et epistemologisk og lingvistisk princip, som kun tillader tale om Guds væsen eller natur i negative definitioner. Gennem en række antropologiske og etiske forbindelsespunkter har dette princip en række mulige konsekvenser for moralepistemologien. Enhver teologisk refleksion som antager denne form for negativ teologi, vil i nogen grad være en theologia viatorum. Som en teologisk undergenre som sådan, vil det også gøre sig gældende for teologisk etik. Dertil kommer at den dynamik, som er et resultat af den jødisk-kristne distinktion, gennem den delvist bibelske og delvist filosofiske idé om, at mennesket skal efterligne eller efterfølge Gud, kan spores i moralfilosofiske forestillinger om ting såsom dyd, perfektion og det gode. Dette har igen konsekvenser for moralepistemologien. Afhandlingen diskuterer tre casestudier: 1) Brevet til Diognetus (Diognetbrevet) (2. årh. e.Kr.) hvor Guds usynlighed og gerninger i frelseshistorien gør efterlignelse af Gud til et delvist paradoksalt forhold; 2) Klemens af Alexandria (c. 150-215 e.Kr.) i hvis værker findes en spænding mellem at efterligne den simple og uudsigelige guddommelige natur, og Jesu Kristi konkrete gerninger; 3) Gregor af Nyssa (c. 335-395 e.Kr.) i hvis værker negativ teologi, en forestilling om Guds uendelighed og en særlig sprogfilosofi fører til udviklingen af en avanceret og kompleks idé om moralsk perfektion. Der argumenteres for, at selvom der er store forskelle på de tre casestudier, er de alle eksempler på hvordan den jødisk- kristne distinktion influerer moralepistemologien gennem en form for negativ teologi, en forestilling om efterlignelse eller efterfølgelse af Gud, samt bestemte antropologiske forbindelsespunkter. 2 Abstract (English) Through three case studies this dissertation argues that there is a close relationship between on the one hand the negative theology, resulting from the radical qualitative distinction between Creator and creation discernible in many early Christian theologies, and on the other certain developments in the moral epistemology of this thinking. This distinction is in the dissertation termed 'the Judeo-Christian distinction'. By negative theology is meant an epistemological and linguistic notion that only allows talk of the divine essence or nature in negative definitions. Through a range of anthropological and ethical points of connection this idea has a number of possible ramifications for moral epistemology. Any theological reflection that presupposes this kind of negative theology will to some degree be a theologia viatorum. As a sub-genre of theology as such, this will also be the case for theological ethics. Moreover, through the idea, partly biblical, partly philosophical, that human beings should in some way imitate, be assimilated to or follow God, the dynamics produced by the Judeo-Christian distinction and negative theology can be recognized in moral philosophical conceptions of such things as virtue, perfection, and the good. This again has consequences for moral epistemology. The dissertation discusses three case studies: 1) The Epistle to Diognetus (2nd century AD), where God's invisibility and his works in the history of salvation makes human imitation of God a somewhat paradoxical matter; 2) Clement of Alexandria (c. 150-215 AD) in whose works there is a tension between imitating the simple and ineffable divine nature, and the concrete works of Jesus Christ; 3) Gregory of Nyssa (c. 335-395 AD) in whose works negative theology, a notion of divine infinity and a certain philosophy of language is influential in the development of an advanced and complex idea of moral perfection.     (Phronema 27:1 (2012) 29-50) CHRISTIANITY AND THE WORLD IN THE LETTER TO DIOGNETUS: INFERENCES FOR CONTEMPORARY ECCLESIAL EXPERIENCE Doru Costache Abstract: The author explores chapters five and six of the Letter to Diognetus for a traditional alternative to the problematic attitudes regarding secular society that occur in contemporary Christianity. Thus he reiterates the challenge launched by Marrou more than sixty years ago, which is to infer from the Letter – beyond its immediate import for early Christians – guidelines for the contemporary ecclesial experience. The article addresses the immediate context and character of the text, progressing to an analysis of the two chapters, and ends by highlighting the relevance of this information for contemporary Christianity. The article adds to current Diognetian studies by identifying as yet ignored traces of it in later Christian literature. he variances between Late Antiquity and secular society notwithstanding, the challenges entailed by the Christian experience within the world of today do not differ significantly from those faced by the earliest Christian generations. This is what makes the latters’ perceptions relevant to us and, indeed, their wisdom still inspires solutions for contemporary impasses. One such issue, discussed below, is the possibility of adopting a genuinely T Christian lifestyle within the secular city. Given the contradictory Christian attitudes toward the secular framework, oscillating between its overall rejection and its uncritical acceptance, this possibility seems remote. Such tendencies will not constitute, however, the object of the following analysis. Instead, given that it addressed similar concerns,1 herein I shall explore the Letter ……….30………. to Diognetus, an apologetic tract whose fifth and sixth chapters treat the challenging condition of Christians in society and their divine assignment as contributors to the general wellbeing.

    How We Got Our New Testament Greg Stiekes, Pastor, Bethany Bible Church, 2014 Introduction We call the 27 books that comprise our New Testament the “New Testament Canon.” The word “canon” is actually a Greek word that means “rule” or “measure.” For example, the word “canon” is used in Galatians 6:16—“As for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them.” In the overall context of the letter to the Galatians, Paul is saying that there is a standard by which he wanted the church to measure up, and whoever was not walking according to that standard was not living out the true Gospel of Jesus Christ. Notice, then, that a canon is a standard that limits or confines. When applied to the New Testament, the word canon means those original, Greek writings which measure up to or meet the standard of being the Word of God. And the canon limits those writings to 27 “books”—no greater, no fewer; 27 books which are believed to comprise the authoritative writings divinely given by God to the church. Yet a 27-book New Testament canon raises several questions which God’s people should be able to answer, especially when skeptics attack the accuracy and authority of the Bible: 1. How do we know that these and these only 27 Greek documents are the writings God gave to the church? 2. Are the present Greek copies of these books accurate? 3. Do we have confident English translations of the original Greek? 4. Why are other early writings rejected from the canon, even though they claim to be from God or his apostles?     The Epistle of Barnabas I. Introduction Due to its ability to “defy any definitive interpretation,” the Epistle of Barnabas has continuously attracted the attention of biblical scholars.1 As Robinson notes, it has “made its appeal with a success of which the author could hardly have dreamed.”2 Although the epistle is not presently included in the New Testament, it was at one time considered to be a work of Scripture by church Fathers such as Clement of Alexandria.3 Clearly an important work of early Christian literature, the epistle has brought about the consistent creation of numerous studies and books.4 II. Date The majority of contemporary scholars believe that the Epistle of Barnabas was in all likelihood composed sometime after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C.E. This majority is also in agreement that the latest possible date for the composition of the epistle is most likely sometime just prior to 130 C.E. Prahlow is Associate Pastor of Connections and Church-Planting at Rooftop Community Church, Saint Louis, Missouri. He earned a MTS in historical theology from St. Louis University and a MA in religion from Wake Forest University. Jacob and his wife, Hayley, have two children and numerous pets. In the formative years between the time of the Apostles of Jesus and the Apologists of Christianity stand several texts which reflect the labor of early Church leaders as they attempted to outline acceptable ethics and what it meant to be the Christian Church. Long neglected, in recent decades scholars have turned to these writings—collectively called the Apostolic Fathers— with increased vigor and the recognition that these sources offer valuable insights into the post-New Testament era.1 Many of the recent studies on the Apostolic Fathers address questions of church order and the construction of authority in these writings.2 One realm which has received comparatively little attention, however, is the conceptions of women in the Apostolic -Fa thers. Studies of women in early Christianity have seen a tremendous growth since Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza’s publication of In Memory of Her in 1983.3 However, studies of women in the New Testament (NT), ordained women in early Christianity, and women in second through fifth century sources have received far more attention than conceptions of women in the Apostolic Fathers.4 The only substantial treatment of this topic comes in Christine Trev- ett’sChristian Women and the Time of the Apostolic Fathers.5 Several factors contribute to this relative neglect.
