Open Philosophy 2018; 1: 50–58 Dorthe Jørgensen* The Intermediate World: A Key Concept in Beautiful Thinking https://doi.org/10.1515/opphil-2018-0005 Received February 28, 2018; accepted April 25, 2018 Abstract: The term ‘the intermediate world’ is a key concept in Den skønne tænkning (Beautiful Thinking) and the metaphysics of experience presented by this book. The metaphysics of experience is about the experiences of transcendence and beautiful thinking that take place in the intermediate world. In the article “The Intermediate World,” this subject is introduced through a discussion of thoughts and concepts formulated by Paul Klee (Zwischenwelt), Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (beautiful thinking), Aristotle (phantasia), Immanuel Kant (expanded thinking), Mark C. Taylor (imagination), and Eugenio Trías (the limit). The text depicts the intermediate world as the level of experience at which the understanding does not yet distinguish between subject and object. The intermediate world is thus not a realm between human and world, nor is it something outside the world we know. The intermediate world is rather the present world in its most original state: the ‘place’ where we find the source of all experience and cognition, a source called ‘basic experience’ characterized by sensation, faith, and comprehension. In this realm, imagination is active and takes the form of an objective force rather than a subjective mental power. Imagination opens mind and world, thus allowing not-yet- actualized possibilities to become perceivable. Abstract This article questions what is hyperreality and underlines the role of the signs/images fostering the perception of a virtual world. It argues the potentiality of signs as artefacts. Starting from Agamben’s perspective regarding contemporary, the hyperreality is understood as a modern, visual and mass manifestation of the need for simulacra in a non-referential virtual world. How hyperreality, spectacle, simulation, and appearance emerge out of reality? What is authentic or real are issues raised using images and technological devices. The images are popular and amplify the effects of distraction and social alienation. The image is immediately absorbed, spectacular, attractive, a peculiar ready-to-think that eliminates or dilutes the concepts and produces a fast culture. Through a reflexive strategy, this article is conceptual (it has no case study or empirical work) and has the purpose of problematize the experience of hyperreality, which is reshaping and restructuring patterns of social life and social interdependence, and the ways we see, think, feel, act or just mean and interpret the reality. El street marketing es una de esas estrategias diferentes, que sale a la calle en busca de los consumidores e irrumpiendo en sus rutinas causando una gran impresión. Además, las redes sociales permiten que este tipo de acciones puedan convertirse en virales llegando a cualquier rincón del planeta sin suponer grandes costes y utilizando como arma la creatividad y la originalidad. Pero el street marketing, al igual que hace la publicidad en su forma más pura, tiene como referencia otras ramas de las que se vale, como es el arte, el cual toma como inspiración hasta tal punto de que muchas veces se lleguen a cuestionar las fronteras entre ambas. -

For 3D shapes, the study of aesthetics [Se´quin 2005; Bergen and Ross 2012; Vartanian et al. 2013; Miura and Gobithaasan 2014] While the problem of image aesthetics has been well explored, the has considered specific manually-crafted features such as curvature study of 3D shape aesthetics has focused on specific manually and symmetry and mathematical properties such as bending energy defined features. Beck EVANSTON, ILLINOIS December 2017 2 © Copyright by Lauren R. Beck 2017 All Rights Reserved 3 Abstract Ototheatre: Learning to Listen and Perform in Sonically Augmented Spaces Lauren R. Beck This dissertation explores a form of performance I call “ototheatre,” which is a mobile and participatory audience experience executed with portable sound technology. Ototheatre is an emergent artistic form that sits at a convergence of contemporary technologies and audience consumption habits. Case studies, including smartphone applications and new theatrical works incorporating novel uses of sound technology, reveal the antecedents and characteristics of this form of theatre. I explore the methods by which these works create intimate, interactive theatrical experiences that extend modes of audience experience. Podcasts are a new media practice that have multiple theatrical antecedents and ototheatrical potential. I analyze a particularly theatrical podcast, choreographer Hofesh Shechter’s Everyday Moments, to show new possibilities for individual modes of performance scripted by podcast artists for solo listening. I trace a genealogy that includes the théâtrophone, radio drama, and the downloadable podcast to demonstrate how the recorded voice has long been creating remote theatrical experiences for audiences through the use of mediatized sound technology. While radio has been called a “theatre of the mind,” I argue that podcasts can create an intimate, post-humanistic theatre of the body. I examine artistic sound works that are related to the audio tour to explore ways of mapping space with sound. -
