WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / THURSDAY, MARCH 12, 2020 CHL STATEMENT: 2019-20 SEASON PAUSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE Toronto, Ont. – The Canadian Hockey League and its three regional leagues the Ontario Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and Western Hockey League, take the health and safety of our players, fans, volunteers, staff, and general public very seriously. CHL President Dan MacKenzie with Commissioners David Branch, Gilles Courteau, and Ron Robison have been monitoring the situation in regards to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) including what local, provincial, and federal health agencies have recommended. Following consultation with medical professionals and meetings today among the CHL Executive Council, and regional league Board of Governors, the CHL announces that the balance of the 2019-20 season and all hockey activity shall be paused immediately until further notice. About the Western Hockey League Regarded as the world’s finest development league for junior hockey players, the Western Hockey League (WHL) head office is based in Calgary, Alberta. The WHL consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 located in Western Canada and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. A member of the Canadian Hockey League, the WHL has been a leading supplier of talent for the National Hockey League for over 50 years. The WHL is also the leading provider of hockey scholarships with over 350 graduates each year receiving WHL Scholarships to pursue a post-secondary education of their choice. It is difficult to be critical of a program that works on improvement and develops skills as well as incorporating fun in the game.

The Story Coming In The Medicine Hat Tigers host the Calgary Hitmen tonight for the third meeting in the course of a week between these two hockey clubs. The Tigers defeated the Hitmen 3-1 Saturday in Medicine Hat before falling 4-2 on Wednesday in Calgary. The Orange and Black are 23-11-1-1 and they are led by their Captain James Hamblin with 55 points (19G, 36A) and veteran forward Brett Kemp with 43 points (16G, 27A). After tonight’s game, the Tabbies will host the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday before departing early next week to Manitoba to take on the Brandon Wheat Kings Tuesday and the Winnipeg ICE on Wednesday. Tigers vs. Hitmen Tonight’s game between the Tigers and the Hitmen will be their third meeting in seven days and their fifth battle of the season. The Hitmen won all three games played at the Saddledome and the Tabbies have won the lone game played at the Canalta Centre. After tonight, Medicine Hat and Calgary will not meet again until March 6th at the Canalta Centre. The Tigers are 11-9-2-0 against the Hitmen over the past five years and 7-2-1-0 when playing at home. A trio of Tigers have four points in the four games played in the series so far – Ryan Chyzowksi (3G, 1A), James Hamblin (1G, 3A) and Cole Sillinger (1G, 3A). View from Calgary Tonight’s game against the Tigers will be the Calgary Hitmen’s fifth game in eight days since returning from their holiday break.

February Is Talk Today Month Across the Ontario Hockey League
February is Talk Today Month across the Ontario Hockey League For Immediate Release Thursday February 1, 2018 Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League, in association with the Canadian Mental Health Association, and Teachers Life, are teaming up to raise awareness about the importance of mental health during upcoming OHL games throughout the month of February. The awareness campaign is part of the ongoing commitment by OHL clubs, local CMHA Ontario Branches, and presenting sponsor Teachers Life, to implement Talk Today. Launched in October 2014, Talk Today provides mental health support to players and raises awareness about mental health and suicide throughout OHL communities. “Since 2014 the Talk Today program has had a very positive impact in OHL communities, and has enhanced the playing environment for our student athletes,” said OHL Commissioner David Branch. “Nobody is immune to mental health challenges and we’re proud to continue our partnership with CMHA Ontario and Teachers Life in hopes that Talk Today can help end the stigma.” A key piece of the Talk Today program has been to educate players about mental health and suicide. Players on all 20 OHL teams have received mental health training specific to suicide awareness called safeTALK. This training helps teach individuals the importance of talking about mental health, how to acknowledge signs of suicide, seek help when they’re in need of support, and connect others in need of support to suicide first aid resources. “Thanks to the leadership and support from the OHL and Teachers Life, the Talk Today program continues to have a lasting impact,” said Camille Quenneville, CEO, CMHA Ontario.
