Voter alignments in a dominant party system: The cleavage structures of the Russian Federation. Master’s Thesis Department of Comparative Politics November 2015 Ivanna Petrova Abstract This thesis investigates whether there is a social cleavage structure across the Russian regions and whether this structure is mirrored in the electoral vote shares for Putin and his party United Russia on one hand, versus the Communist Party of the Russian Federation and its leader Gennady Zyuganov on the other. In addition to mapping different economic, demographic and cultural factors affecting regional vote shares, this thesis attempts to determine whether there is a party system based on social cleavages in Russia. In addition, as the Russian context is heavily influenced by the president, this thesis investigates whether the same cleavages can explain the distribution of vote shares during the presidential elections. Unemployment, pensioners, printed newspapers and ethnicity create opposing effects during parliamentary elections, while distance to Moscow, income, pensioners, life expectancy, printed newspapers and ethnicity created opposing effects during the presidential elections. The first finding of this thesis is not only that the Russian party system is rooted in social cleavages, but that it appears to be based on the traditional “left-right” cleavage that characterizes all Western industrialized countries. In addition, despite the fact that Putin pulls voters from all segments of the society, the pattern found for the party system persists during presidential elections. The concluding finding shows that the main political cleavage in today’s Russia is between the left represented by the communists and the right represented by the incumbents. -

International Conference: Ancient Greece & Ancient Iran / Cross-Cultural encounters Athens 11-14 November 2006 Abstract Psychotropic plants on Achaemenid–style vessels Dr. Despina IGNATIADOU Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, Greece Three important plants dominate the vegetal decoration of Achaemenid-style vessels: • The opium poppy or papaver somniferum. The petalled element on top of the seedpod is the inspiration for the creation of multi-petalled rosettes. They are usually called long petals and they are one of the most popular decorative elements. Their connection to an existing plant was not attempted until recently, as it was thought that those render a stylized imaginary flower. • The so-called lotus, but really a water-lily: o The white lotus or nymphaea alba. On the vessels appears the flower consisting of rounded petals with parallel ridges. o The blue-lotus or nymphaea caerulaea. On the vessels appears the flower consisting of pointed petals, often called lanceolate leaves. • The almond tree, represented by its fruits, usually called lobes instead of almonds. The three plants appear in a similar way on vessels fabricated in different workshops during the Achaemenid period, within and also outside the geographical boundaries of the Persian Empire. It is also important that they appear on the decoration of shallow and deep bowls, which are vessels used for libations or ritual drinking. They are not wide-range edible plants, on which the local populations would rely for survival. In that case they would have righteously gained their place in the decoration of valuable vessels. Moreover, they are plants which in the historical period grow only in certain parts of the ancient world, while their depiction is ubiquitous. -

We suggest a method of constructing red numbers for plant species, in order to set priorities in con- servation policy. The red number is an additive index, summarising values of four parameters: 1. Rarity – The number of sites (1 km2) where the species is present. A rare species is defined when present in 0.5% of the area or less. 2. Declining rate and habitat vulnerability – Evaluate the decreasing rate in the number of sites and/or the destruction probability of the habitat. 3. Attractivity – the flower size and the probability of cutting or exploitation of the plant. 4. Distribution type – scoring endemic species and peripheral populations. The plant species of Israel were scored for the parameters of the red number. Three hundred and seventy (370) species, 16.15% of the Israeli flora entered into the “Red List” received red numbers above 6. “Post Mortem” analysis for the 34 extinct species of Israel revealed an average red number of 8.7, significantly higher than the average of the current red list. -

Caldesia grandis Samuelsson is an endangered wetland herb on the brink of extinction in the vast area of Mainland China, which holds close to one eighth of the worlds vascular plant species. The pollination ecology and breeding system of C. grandis were investigated from three natural populations occurring in two wetlands near the top of Mangshan Mountain in Hunan Province, central China. The species is in flower from early July to late Sep- tember with a peak in August. The process of flower anthesis in C. grandis begins at about 10.00 am and lasts about four-and-one-quarter h. The flowers lasted ca. 5.5 h. Caldesia grandis is self-compatible; however, autogamy re- sulted in lower seed set than geitonogamy and xenogamy as well as free pollination. Both pollen viability and the seed set in open-pollinated controls at the same site were typically high (65.44% and 71.78% respectively). Mean pollen: ovule ratios in the three populations ranged from 901.75 to 931.354. No seed germination was observed, either in the field or in laboratory experiments. Effluent was collected from Ravi which is one of the highly polluted river as compared to other rivers in Pakistan. One of the major reason is industrial wastewater, which is disposed untreated in the Ravi which is a major threat for aquatic life and toxic for human health. It further reports that the water of Ravi river is contaminated with heavy metals like Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg and Zn because their uptake by waterlily plants is an indication that these metals are responsible for polluting Ravi water and this issue need to be resolved on priority basis. In order to estimate the amount of heavy metals in waterlily, different tissues were processed for atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) which revealed that Cd and Cr (later being in high concentration) were significantly accumulated by waterlily roots, stem and leaves, however, roots were more responsive as compared with aerial parts. Other metals were accumulated in negligible amount in roots, and almost no uptake was reported by stems and leaves. -

Nowadays, ‘internal eutrophication’ has become a widely accepted term in Dutch water management practice to describe the eutrophication of an ecosystem without additional external input of nutrients (N, P, K). This review surveys the principal mechanisms involved in this process. It also discusses possible remedies to combat internal eutrophication. Introduction In the Netherlands, the term internal eutrophication (‘interne eutrofiëring’ in Dutch) has become popular through publications by Roelofs and co-workers since the late 1980s [1–8]. Most of these publications were written in Dutch and described the eutrophication of surface waters in Dutch peaty lowlands as a result of changes in water quality without additional external supply of nutrients (N, P, K). Their ideas were based on the observation that water quality had deteriorated considerably, even in nature reserves, although in many cases no significant increase had occurred in the external nutrient loads [1, 3, 5]. -

La- The world of 120 million years ago was one dominant global floristic element, a transfor- mented by Charles Darwin as “an abomina- of dynamic biological processes. During that mative event that ultimately altered the char- ble mystery” (1), the abrupt appearance of time the flowering plants emerged as the acter of the entire planet. Understandably, angiosperms and their sudden burst of diver- sification in the fossil record continues to captivate contemporary plant systematists, who have sought a solution by incorporating massive amounts of DNA sequence data in comparative phylogenetic studies of extant species. However, despite extensive techno- logical advances in genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics, which have revolutionized plant research over the past decades, our comprehension of life on earth during such ancient times continues to rely primarily on one data source: the fossil record. In PNAS, Gomez et al. (2) uncover an important clue to Darwin’s mystery by their analyses of Monteschia vidalii,anenigmaticplantfossil from Barremian deposits in Spain. Their re- interpretation of these fossils provides a new perspective that allies Monteschia not only with the angiosperms, but specifically with extant members of the order Ceratophyllales, a group of considerable interest in debates concerning the origin of flowering plants. The characterization of these early plants as highly specialized aquatics also offers novel interpretations regarding the ecological char- acteristics of early angiosperms.
