Media Release Singapore Art Museum Reveals Singapore Biennale 2016 Artists and Artwork Highlights ‘An Atlas of Mirrors’ Explained Through 9 Curatorial Sub-Themes Singapore, 22 September 2016 – The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) today revealed a list of 62 artists and art collectives and selected artwork highlights of the Singapore Biennale 2016 (SB2016), one of Asia’s most exciting contemporary visual art exhibitions. Titled An Atlas of Mirrors, SB2016 draws on diverse artistic viewpoints that trace the migratory and intertwining relationships within the region, and reflect on shared histories and current realities with East and South Asia. SB2016 will present 60 artworks that respond to An Atlas of Mirrors, including 49 newly commissioned and adapted artworks. The SB2016 artworks, spanning various mediums, will be clustered around nine sub-themes and presented across seven venues – Singapore Art Museum and SAM at 8Q, Asian Civilisations Museum, de Suantio Gallery at SMU, National Museum of Singapore, Stamford Green, and Peranakan Museum. The full artist list can be found in Annex A. SB2016 Artists In addition to the 30 artists already announced, SB2016 will include Chou Shih Hsiung, Debbie Ding, Faizal Hamdan, Abeer Gupta, Subodh Gupta, Gregory Halili, Agan Harahap, Kentaro Hiroki, Htein Lin, Jiao Xingtao, Sanjay Kak, Marine Ky, H.H. Lim, Lim Soo Ngee, Made Djirna, Made Wianta, Perception3, Niranjan Rajah, S. Chandrasekaran, Sharmiza Abu Hassan, Nilima Sheikh, Praneet Soi, Adeela Suleman, Melati Suryodarmo, Nobuaki Takekawa, Jack Tan, Tan Zi Hao, Ryan Villamael, Wen Pulin, Xiao Lu, Zang Honghua, and Zulkifle Mahmod. SB2016 artists are from 18 countries and territories in Southeast Asia, South Asia and East Asia. -

Jun 03, 2011 17:13 +08 Singapore Pavilion Opens at the Venice Biennale 2011 Singapore artist Ho Tzu Nyen presents “The Cloud of Unknowing”, a video art installation at the Singapore Pavilion of the 54th Venice Biennale. The Pavilion will be officially opened on Wednesday, 1 June at the Salone di Ss. Filippo e Giacomo del Museo Diocesano di Venezia, Italyby the Chairman of the National Arts Council (NAC) Singapore, Mr Edmund Cheng. Mr Khor Kok Wah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, NAC, said, “I am pleased that Singapore continues to be a part of the Venice Biennale even as we strive to establish similar international platforms like the recently concluded Singapore Biennale, and Art Stage Singapore in January this year. Such international platforms are vital for the creative connections that are forged across borders and cultures.” The theme of this year’s Venice Biennale, “ILLUMInations”, calls for a reflection upon the conventions through which contemporary art is viewed. Ho’s audio-visual installation explores art history, looking at forms of illumination, luminance and of being transported by clouds. His piece portrays the sensory experience of eight different characters occupying apartments in a deserted, low-income public housing block in Singapore, each of whom has an encounter with a cloud which alternates between appearing as a figure, and a vaporous mist. “The Cloud of Unknowing” is commissioned and presented by The National Arts Council Singapore and supported by the Lee Foundation and Mori Art Museum. The curator of the pavilion, June Yap, is an independent curator based in Singapore. She has curated with the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore (LASALLE) and the Singapore Art Museum. -

CLASSIC CONTEMPORARY CONTEMPORARY SOUTHEAST ASIAN ART FROM THE SINGAPORE ART MUSEUM COLLECTION 29 JANUARY TO 2 MAY 2010 ADVISORY: THIS PUBLICATION CONTAINS IMAGES OF A GRAPHIC NATURE ABOUT THE EXHIBITION Classic Contemporary shines the spotlight on Singapore Art Museum’s most iconic contemporary artworks in its collection. By playfully asking what makes a work of art “classic” or “contemporary” — or “classic contemporary” — this accessible and quirky exhibition aims to introduce new audiences to the ideas and art forms of contemporary art. A stellar cast of painting, sculpture, video, photography and performance art from across Southeast Asia are brought together and given the red-carpet treatment, and the whole of the SAM 8Q building is transformed into a dramatic stage for these stars and icons. Yet beneath the glamour, many of the artworks also probe and prod serious issues — often asking critical and challenging questions about society, nation and the history of art itself. Since its inception in 1996, SAM has focused on collecting the works of artists practicing in the region, and many of these once-emerging artists have since established notable achievements on regional and international platforms. This exhibition marks the start of SAM’s new contemporary art programming centred on enabling artistic development through the creation of exhibition and programming platforms, as well as growing audiences for contemporary art. Classic Contemporary offers an opportunity to revisit major works by Suzann Victor, Matthew Ngui, Simryn Gill, Redza Piyadasa, Jim Supangkat, Nindityo Adipurnomo, Agnes Arellano, Agus Suwage, and Montien Boonma, among others. A full programme of curatorial lectures, artist presentations, moving image screenings and performances complete the classic contemporary experience.
