The mission of Tyndale Seminary is to provide Christ-centred graduate theological education for leaders in the church and society whose lives are marked by intellectual maturity, spiritual vigour and moral integrity, and whose witness will faithfully engage culture with the Gospel. I. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course offers a fresh, constructive and perhaps even controversial interpretation and re- envisioning of the Pentecostal tradition. A study is made of the early years of the Pentecostal movement and the influence of Wesleyan, Holiness and its revivalist-restorationist roots in an attempt to interpret the heart of the movement, as well as the way Pentecostal spirituality Date of Revision: May 8, 2020 1 has developed over the decades that followed. An attempt is made to be both analytical and descriptive, historical and creative, theoretical and practical. Format: The course is a hybrid, combining video content from the live-stream version of this course (July 20-24) with features of an online course, such as weekly interaction with other students in discussion forums. It is also an intensive: we cover in six weeks what is usually covered in twelve weeks. It is highly recommended, then, that the student finish the primary readings before the course begins. II. LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate conversance with the primary aspects of Pentecostal spirituality by the completion of short answer questions. 2. Articulate the biblical and theological roots of Pentecostal spirituality through writing book reports. 3. Demonstrate through participation in discussion forums the ability to think constructively about Pentecostal Spirituality as a corporate phenomena with relevance for the church and mission. 4. Apply concepts of Pentecostal spirituality to ministry contexts by describing how such might be done in a term paper. III. COURSE REQUIREMENTS A. REQUIRED READING 1. Land, Steven. C. ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING 1. Forums 1.1. Overview: To enable the student to benefit from the online experience as well as the classroom dynamic, this course incorporates lecture (and some discussion) from the live- stream classroom into the online curriculum. In the forums, students interact with both what they heard in the lecture and what they are reading. Consequently, there are two types of forum discussions: Forum A, interaction with readings; Forum B, interaction with lectures. Typically, Forum A runs 0n Tuesdays, and Forum B, Fridays. Participation in class forums is a central element of the course, and the 35% awarded for effective participation in the forums is indicative of its importance. Unlike traditional assignments in a classroom oriented course, where the student has anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to complete an assignment, the forums demand concentrated effort in a short span of time. Date of Revision: May 8, 2020 3 1.2 Participation in forums: Rules of engagement: 1. Forums are collegial rather than competitive – together we are learning and growing together. 2. A critique of your opinions is what you are paying for, since you already know what you think; you are paying for interaction to expand your thinking. 3. The due date for all initial forum postings in Forum A is Tuesday at midnight. Please respond to other members in your group by Thursday at midnight. 4. The due date for postings in Forum B is Friday at midnight. Please respond to others in your group by the following Monday at midnight. 1.3 Length of postings Initial posting: when I ask for a paragraph, I mean 100-150 words. A lot can be said in a paragraph of that length. Responses: the response to another’s initial posting, or a response to someone else’s response, should be in the 50-100 word range, but no more than a 100 words please. Only the first Forum, described below (A1) may be up to 300 words in total. 2. FORUM A: Description 2.1 Forum A: Interaction with readings (20%) The topics/questions for the individual forums will be assigned the week before they are to be discussed. Note: the best 5/6 forums will count toward the student’s grade (5 x 5 points) = 25%. 2.2. Forum A1: First Impressions of Pentecostal Spirituality Write about your preliminary impressions of Pentecostal spirituality In three paragraphs, describe your impression of three aspects of Pentecostal spirituality. There is no research required for this; your responses represent your impressions before the course begins. You will share this information in the first Forum A discussion. At the beginning of the post, please classify yourself with one of the following: #1 grew up in Pentecostal church; or #2 pastoring Pentecostal church; or #3 only know about Pentecostals through friends or spouse’s experience; or #4 was not raised in a Pentecostal church, but have attended one; or #5 involved in a charismatic church; or #6 do not know much about Pentecostals but I am wanting to learn. [Or, some other way?] Paragraph 1: general impressions of Pentecostal spirituality (What do Pentecostals consider spiritual activity? Who do Pentecostals consider to be spiritual people? And, if you have attended Pentecostal worship services, how do Pentecostal services reflect these perceptions of spiritual activity and spiritual people?) Paragraph 2: general impressions of the role and value of tongues for Pentecostals (What role does tongues play in their spiritual lives? How much value is attached to speaking in tongues? How do Pentecostal services reflect these ideas?) Date of Revision: May 8, 2020 4 Paragraph 3: general impressions of Pentecostal view of the gifts of the Spirit (Which ones are important to them? How are they practiced in their worship services?) Please note that this initial post is longer than the others. Length: 100 words maximum per paragraph. Post by July 21, before midnight. 2.3 Forum A2-A6 Discussion questions will be given for each week on the course page–– A2: Question about Ch 1, Steven Land’s Pentecostal Spirituality The discussions of Land will revolve around one of the questions that are assigned for each chapter, which you will find listed in Appendix A. A3: Question about Ch 2, Land A4: Discussion of Albrecht and Howard, “Pentecostal Spirituality” Pay particular attention to corporate rites of worship and the sensibilities & values of Pentecostals A5: Question about Ch 3, Land A6: Question about Ch 4, Land 3. Forum B: DESCRIPTION 3.1 Interaction with video lectures (5 forums x 3 = 15%) The live-stream course met the week of July 20-24. The video of those sessions will be available on the course page. The classroom videos are approxametly 2.5 - 3 hours in length. The student will be expected to watch the video, and then respond with a two-part post in Forum B by Friday night.

    Changing Paradigms in Pentecostal Education (Glopent, February, 2009) William K Kay, Director of the Centre for Pentecostal and Charismatic Studies, Bangor University, Wales Introduction In this brief paper I will first outline old Pentecostal paradigms of education in the period roughly before 1939. I will then look at intermediate paradigms in the period up to about 1975. Finally, attention will be given to more recent developments within Pentecostal education. The word ‘paradigm’ is well enough known to require little explanation. Its recent usage dates back to Thomas Kuhn’s description of scientific thinking: scientists work within a paradigm (normal science) until a startling innovation makes the paradigm unsustainable, after which the new paradigm became normative.1 The paradigm of Newtonian physical science operated in the 19th century until Einsteinian physics took over early in the 20th century. David Bosch used the concept of paradigms for his book, Transforming Mission, and it appears to be from here that Hans Küng’s borrowed the notion for his big book on Christianity.2 The only point that needs to be made in this discussion is to ask ourselves whether paradigms are mutually exclusive. In one view, everything under the old paradigm has to be translated into the new paradigm after a period of transition. In another view, two or more paradigms may co-exist in a postmodern way. At the point of transition it is not clear, then, whether an old paradigm is being replaced so that the new paradigm becomes the only framework within which work is conducted or whether the new paradigm simply operates as an alternative to the new one so as to allow inter-paradigm dialogue.

Although there were not many Anglican participants in British Pentecostalism and most Pentecostals came from Nonconformist backgrounds, Boddy dominated the leadership from the beginning. As a result, most of the British Pentecostals who were actively involved in the forming of Pentecostal denominations were either directly or indirectly influenced by him. However, as Pentecostalism grew, disagreement and conflict appeared over certain issues and intensified during the period when the Pentecostal denominations were taking shape.

Kay* Trinity College, Carmarthen, SA31 3EP, UK email: [email protected] Introduction This paper explores empirical data to test for the main approaches to healing being pursued by British Pentecostal ministers. It sets these approaches within a theological and historical context. On the basis of its findings, it sketches two scenarios about the future place healing might play in the church of the twenty-first century. Theological and Historical Context The four main Pentecostal denominations within the UK have all historically either explicitly or by implication addressed the issue of healing within the statements of faith to which their ministers are expected to subscribe. For example, Assemblies of God in Great Britain and Ireland say, ’we believe that deliverance from sickness by Divine Healing is provided for in the Atonement’. Similarly the Church of God states, ’Divine healing is provided for all in the atonement’. The Apostolic church certainly accepted the strong Pentecostal position on healing, though in its tenets there is nothing more specific than refer- ence to the ’nine gifts of the Holy Spirit for the edification, exhortation and comfort of the Church’.     GLOSSOLALIA IN by CHURCH HISTORY Prof. A. Barkley The earliest ·evidence of glossolaly in post apostolic days is that of the Montanists in the second century. They introduced a new kind of prophecy which Eusebius· says was "contrary to the traditional and constant custom ·of the Church". 1 The prophet claimed to fall into a trance or ecstatic transport, "Moved by the spirit he suddenly fell into a state of possession as it were, and abnormal ecstacy, insomuch that he became frenzied and began to babble and utter strange _sounds".2 Montanus taught that under the dispensation of the Spirit, whom the Lord had promised to His Church, a fuller revelation was now to be expected. He regarded himself as the organ of the Paraclete and, charged with this new revelation, he delivered it in strange utterances, which led some to take him for a man possessed by an evil spirit and others to revere him as an inspired prophet.3 Two women, Prisca and Maximilla, who had become the disciples of Montanus entered into the movement with an enthusiasm that seemed almost fanaticaL We have no means of ascertaining, however, the number of con' verts. While at first the Montanists remained within the Church it soon became apparent that their teaching was incompatible with the doctrines of the Church. Synodical action was taken by the leaders of the Church in Asia Minor and the movement became separated from the Church. The lectures, while including a section on the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada (Canada’s largest Pentecostal denomination), examine the global impact of this worldwide movement. The movement is traced as to its scope and variety in both Pentecostal and non-Pentecostal circles and analysed in terms of the factors related to its widespread acceptance. LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course, the student will: ● Identify the theological tenets, central figures and catalytic events involved in both the emergence of the Pentecostal movement and its spread; ● Identify about the diversities and commonalities of the global Pentecostal/charismatic movement; ● Appreciate that personal sacrifice was not only integral to the emergence of the Pentecostal movement, but continues to be an essential element for renewal to continue; ● Minister within his/her church setting, whatever the denominational affiliation, with a renewed desire to be empowered and led by the Holy Spirit. ABSTRACT From the beginning of the Pentecostal Movement in 1906, Pentecostal meetings were plagued by what they labeled “counterfeit manifestations.” These manifestations were creating negative consequences for the movement and Pentecostals needed a strategy that would identify and eradicate them from their meetings. Because Pentecostalism was in its infancy, it did not have a clear procedure to assist in identifying counterfeit manifestations, to determine how they operated, and/or who or what produced them.
