Photographs from the IPN Archive The National Day of the Flag of Poland is celebrated on May 2 on the basis of the amended Act on the National Emblem, Colors, and Anthem of the Republic of Poland, enacted by the Sejm on 20 February 2004. The white and red colors of the Polish flag have been with us for generations. They accompanied Greater Poland insurgents, soldiers fighting for the borders of independent Poland, and were present during state events. The Polish flag has been with us in moments of both joy and sadness. Polish flags were torn down by our occupiers, hung in Warsaw during the Uprising and painted on planes fighting in the Battle of Britain. They proudly waved over Monte Cassino, were blood-soaked during the strikes in December 1970 and welcomed the Polish Pope, to go on to be present at ‘Solidarity’ demonstrations. A Short History of Poland
A Short History of Poland The story of Poland is a tale of long stretches of foreign rule, and repeated attempts by Poles to evict foreign occupiers and to reclaim self-rule. Between 1600 and 1845 alone, Poland was invaded, or fought for freedom, 43 times. The arrival of the Slavs on the land known today as Poland gave rise to the Piast dynasty and the adoption of Christianity in 966 – the year when Poland is considered to have been born as a nation. The next great dynasty began when the Grand Duke Jagiello of Lithuania married Poland’s Queen Jadwiga who ruled Poland with the full powers of a King. Jadwiga and Jagiello continued to rule together as co-equals. This union of the Crowns eventually led to a full political union of the two states, subsequently known as the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, in 1569. The Polish Winged Hussars were the main cavalry in the Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth between the 16th and 18th centuries. The Commonwealth, often referred to as the First Polish Republic (their kings were not absolute monarchs as elsewhere in Europe, but were elected and responsible to the Senate) was the largest and most populous state in 16th and 17th century Europe, spanning some 390,000 square miles and with a multi-ethnic and multi- religious population of 11 million at its peak. It was known for religious tolerance, as exemplified by King Zygmunt Augustus who stated that he was the King of the people, but not of their conscience. Uninvolved in Europe’s religious wars, Poland was a refuge for many people persecuted because of their religion.

Veteran Honored at Wildwood a Century After Victory

VETERAN HONORED AT WILDWOOD A CENTURY AFTER VICTORY By Ellen Knight1 A quiet, almost unwitnessed but profoundly reverent tribute was paid in October 2020 to a veteran buried in Wildwood Cemetery. The man paying tribute was Lt. Col. Karol Budniak, Assistant Defense and Air Attaché from the Embassy of Poland in Washington. The sole witness was Marie Johnson, retired Director of Volunteer Services at Winchester Hospital. On Oct. 14, Johnson was taking a walk at Wildwood when she saw a man obviously searching for a particularly grave. It was Saturday; the cemetery office was closed. Characteristically, Johnson was quick to offer to help. “He said he had just flown into Boston that afternoon and showed me a photo of the gravestone he needed to find before returning to Washington.” Johnson and Budniak split up, taking different routes, Johnson heading for a section that fit the time period. She was, in fact, the one to find the correct site and led Budniak to his goal. “He explained that the Polish want to recognize and thank a group of American pilots who assisted the people of Poland in keeping their independence finally regained after World War I,” she said. “They have the list and have been traveling about the country marking their graves with two flags and a candle.”2 The list had been whittled down to four, including one at Wildwood. After Budniak placed the candle with a flag to either side, Johnson left him to his private reflections.

Some National Flags from our History . National Flag of Scotland Full country name: Scotland Capital city: Edinburgh The National Flag of Scotland is the Cross of Saint Andrew. St. Andrew is Scotland's patron saint. His cross is now Scotland's flag. The flag consists of a dark blue base with a white St. Andrew's cross through the middle of it. Tradition states that Scotland adopted St. Andrew, a disciple of Jesus who is said to have been crucified on a cross with diagonal beams (X-shaped), as their patron saint. His remains were preserved, and Constantine wanted to remove them to Constantinople. A Greek monk was warned by an angel of this intent, and was instructed to take them to the ends of the Earth. This he did, until he was shipwrecked in Scotland. St. Andrew's bones were buried in Scotland. A second legend says that King Angus, about to lead his army into battle against a stronger force, spent the night praying for divine guidance and St. Andrew appeared in his dreams, promising victory. The next day the King saw white clouds form a saltire (cross) when he looked up into the blue sky. After this vision Angus led his soldiers to victory and he proclaimed St. Andrew as the patron saint of Scotland. The Saint Andrew cross is one of the oldest national flags of all, dating back at least to the 12th century, although the honor of the oldest flag among modern nations generally falls to the flag of Denmark. Rok 2016 był pierwszym, w którym pełna odpowiedzialność za kształtowanie i prowadzenie polskiej polityki zagranicznej została powierzona nowej większości sejmowej. 29 stycznia 2016 r. w imieniu rządu premier Beaty Szydło informację o jego polityce zagranicznej przedstawił Sejmowi minister spraw zagranicznych Witold Waszczykowski. Najważniejszym wyzwaniem, przed jakim stanął nowy rząd, był zbliżający się szczyt NATO, który zgodnie z postanowieniami szczytu w Walii w 2014 r. miał odbyć się w Warszawie. W związku z agresją Rosji na Ukrainę w 2014 r., aneksją Krymu i okupowaniem przez Rosję wschodnich terytoriów Ukrainy radykalnie zmieniła się sytuacja bezpieczeństwa w Europie.
